nxnative now supports Switch 2, starting with Donkey Kong Bananza. 60 fps on M4 Pro.
A lot of time went into the initial Ampere bring-up and optimization. With that foundation in place, hopefully the next games will be quicker to get running. seedds/nxnative t.co

PadHub: one iOS app that runs Sunshine, Melee, Wind Waker and Switch ports, with NSO GameCube controllers*
I got the iphone duo a couple days ago and I'm having a blast customizing it. Disclaimer : everything is made with claude code, not a single line of code was written by a human .
I wanted a nice interface for all the new native ports of games, in one app instead of one app per game, so I made PadHub, an open-source launcher for iPhone/iPad that runs them all inside a single app:
For now i just added :
- Super Mario Sunshine (SunPad), Super Smash Bros. Melee (MeleePad) and The Wind Waker (BlueWake), the GameCube recompilations by chrissotraidis
- Switch games packed with nxnative by seedds (tested: Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Animal Crossing: New Horizons)
But all the other games could go in there too.
What it does:
- A console-style carousel with real box art (GameTDB), driven by any controller or by touch, in portrait or landscape
- Switch 2 NSO GameCube controllers over Bluetooth, up to 4 players, in every game. iOS has no driver for them, so I wrote one: NSOGCKit
- HOME in any game opens PadHub's menu: resume, controllers (who's player 1, rumble to find one, disconnect), the game's settings, quit
- Quit a game and start another without restarting the app, the Switch games included (they tear down in-process: threads, Metal, guest memory, and the host state goes back to a load-time snapshot)
- Games start straight away; their own settings stay one button away
How it fits together: each game's core is its own framework, loaded at runtime and exporting a single class, so several Dolphin/SDL/runtime copies live in one process without clashing. BlueWake's SDL loop runs nested, with PadHub's UI inside it.
- PadHub: pookee/padhub
- NSOGCKit (NSO GameCube controllers on iOS/macOS): pookee/nso-gamecube-ios
- SunPad: chrissotraidis/sunpad
- MeleePad: chrissotraidis/meleepad
- BlueWake: chrissotraidis/bluewake
- nxnative: seedds/nxnative
All the credit for the games goes to those projects and the ones they build on (RecompCore, Dolphin/ModernGekko, Aurora, Dawn, SDL). Box art from GameTDB. Tested on an iPhone Duo (A20 Pro).

NXNative: Switch games on a Mac, no emulator
NXNative runs Switch games on my Mac without an emulator. I love it, and it worries me
Two weeks ago a repository called nxnative showed up on GitHub. It takes a Nintendo Switch game you own, plus your own console keys, and turns it into a Mac app or an unsigned IPA you can sideload on an iPhone. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 60 fps on a phone. It's at almost ten thousand stars at the time of writing.
I've been playing with it since the first week, and yesterday I opened my first pull request. I also think it's one of those projects where the thing that makes it great is the same thing that makes it uncomfortable. Both of those things are true at the same time, and I want to write about both.
It's not an emulator, and that's the clever bit
Every Switch emulator so far has done the same thing: pretend to be the Switch's ARM CPU, pretend to be its GPU, and translate everything at runtime. That costs a lot, which is why emulators need beefy hardware and still stutter.
NXNative skips the first part completely. The Switch runs on an ARM chip. So does every Apple Silicon Mac and every recent iPhone. The game's own code can run directly on the Apple CPU, no translation needed. The only things that have to be replaced are the parts that talk to Nintendo's operating system and GPU.
Your NSP + prod.keys

NSO rewriter patches the game binary so it runs as a normal process

Horizon HLE host answers the game's calls to the Switch OS (files, input, audio)

NVN → Metal rebuilds the Switch graphics API on Apple's Metal

Mac app or unsigned IPA
The author compares it to Wine more than to an emulator, and that's the right mental model. The game thinks it's on a Switch. It isn't. It's a native process on your Mac with a compatibility layer underneath.
What surprised me most is how far along it already is for something that's two weeks old. Around seventy titles are on the tested list, each with a notes page that says what works and what doesn't. Some notes are charming in their honesty: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs great but has no Mii heads. Balatro plays by touch. The first build takes half an hour to an hour and needs an M1 iPad or an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, because older phones can't read the compressed texture format.
My pull request: a controller macOS could see but the game couldn't
I own an 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless. In its own mode over Bluetooth it shows up in System Settings with a battery percentage, so macOS clearly knows it exists. Mario Kart didn't. Nothing happened when I pressed a button.
The reason is that NXNative reads controllers through Apple's GameController framework, and GameController only lists Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and MFi controllers. Anything else is invisible to it, even though macOS pairs it just fine. I filed the issue, looked at the code, and decided it was small enough to fix myself.
The PR reads those controllers through IOHIDManager instead, the lower-level HID API that sees everything. Each HID pad gets a player slot the same way the GameController pads do, so you can mix them. Two Xbox controllers and two 8BitDos are players one to four. The mapping from HID buttons, hat and axes to Switch buttons lives in one header with no platform code in it, so it has its own test. Three environment variables let you remap buttons, log the raw usage numbers, or turn the whole thing off:
DM_HID_MAP=A=1,B=2,X=3,Y=4 # remap buttons
DM_HID_LOG=1 # print each button's HID usage number
DM_HID_PADS=0 # turn HID pads off
It's about two hundred lines. I tested it with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Party Jamboree with the 8BitDo next to an Xbox controller, checking every button and stick against the log. The known limit is that it skips vendors by name (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) to avoid reading a controller twice, so an MFi pad from another vendor would show up twice. The comment in the file says where to add it.
The PR is still open. Contributing to a codebase that is mostly C and Objective-C after years of TypeScript was more fun than I expected. The code is small and direct, and the author has clear rules: no game files, no keys, nothing extracted from a game in any change.
The part I keep going back and forth on
Here's the thing. NXNative requires you to supply your own game and your own keys. The repository contains nothing from Nintendo. Legally and technically, it's a tool for playing games you already paid for, on hardware you already own.
To be clear, that's how I use it. The two games in my library came off my own Switch, with my own keys. I bought them, I dumped them, and nothing was downloaded from anywhere.
I don't think that's how most people will use it.
Dumping your own cartridge means hacking a Switch, which only works on early hardware revisions, and then extracting your keys. Most people who hear "Mario Kart on iPhone" are not going to do that. They're going to download an NSP from somewhere. The tool doesn't do anything wrong, but it makes the wrong thing a lot more attractive.
Nintendo's track record here is clear. Yuzu was sued in February 2024 and settled for 2.4 million dollars and a full shutdown. Ryujinx disappeared later that year after Nintendo got in touch with the developer. Nintendo's argument in the Yuzu case was that Tears of the Kingdom leaked a week and a half before release and was downloaded over a million times. A million downloads is not a million lost sales, and I think everyone who has looked at the numbers honestly agrees with that. But it's also not zero.
And that's where my doubt sits. I love that I can play Mario Kart on my Mac with my own controller. I also work on software for a living, and I know what it costs to build something good. Games are the most expensive software there is. A Nintendo first-party title is years of work by hundreds of people. If a meaningful share of the people playing it on an iPhone never paid for it, that's money that doesn't go into the next one.
The usual counterargument is that pirates wouldn't have bought the game anyway, and there's some research pointing that way. A study commissioned by the European Commission in 2017 found no clear evidence that piracy displaced game sales, and even hinted at a small positive effect. I find that plausible for a fifteen-year-old with no money. I find it less plausible for an adult with an iPhone 15 Pro and a Mac, which is exactly who NXNative is for.
So why contribute
Because the technical idea is right, and I think it will outlive this particular project.
Running ARM binaries natively with a thin compatibility layer is a better approach than emulation, and not just for Switch games. It's the same idea that made Wine and Proton work, and the Steam Deck exists because of it. If Nintendo shuts NXNative down tomorrow, the approach doesn't go away. Someone will apply it to the next thing.
I also think the best way to keep a project like this on the right side of the line is for people who care about that line to be part of it. The author already draws it clearly. I'd rather help with controller support than watch from a distance and complain.
I don't have a clean answer. I have a working controller and an open PR. That will have to do for now.

Nxnative – Switch games running natively on iPhone, iPad and Mac as unsigned IPA

I got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe running locally on an Apple TV 4K and made a Mac app to help others try it
Started out getting Mario Kart 8 Deluxe running on my Mac, then went down the rabbit hole of getting it running on my Apple TV too.
It’s now running locally on an A15 Apple TV 4K, using a controller. No streaming from the Mac. It uses nxnative to rewrite the Switch executable and provide the compatibility layer needed to run it on Apple hardware. It isn’t a full source decompilation.
The Apple TV took quite a bit of extra work:
tvOS support and controller handling, including fixing the confirm button also sending you back to the Apple TV home screen.
Texture changes and a Mario Kart specific memory patch to stay within tvOS’s app memory limit.
Shader preparation before gameplay to reduce compilation pauses.
Dropping the game’s rendering and presentation to 720p, which made a massive difference. I’m really happy with how it plays now.
The version tested is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 4.0.1, with DLC. New tracks can still cause shader compilation stutters on their first run, so this is very much experimental.
I’ve also put together a Mac GUI app to make the build process easier: select your own game files, build a tvOS IPA, then transfer the game data to your Apple TV.
GitHub: ltomo2/nxnative-tv-builder
Mac app download: github.com/ltomo2/nxnative-tv-builder/releases/ta…
Upstream nxnative project: seedds/nxnative
For this preview, you’ll need an Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 26.6 or later, full Xcode 27 with the tvOS SDK, your own game dump/update and keys, and enough free storage.
Allow roughly 30GB extra for Mario Kart. You’ll also need a controller and a way to sign/install the app on the Apple TV.
The Mac app is an unsigned/notarized experimental preview. The build/export process has been tested, but the complete Sideloadly installation route still needs verification. Other games aren’t guaranteed to work, and the Mario Kart memory patch is specific to its tested executable.
No Nintendo games, keys or game assets are included. Credit to the nxnative developers for the underlying project. This builds on their work with the Apple TV changes and a friendlier Mac interface.

I got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe running locally on an Apple TV 4K and made a Mac app to help others try it Started out getting Mario Kart 8 Deluxe running on my Mac, then went down the rabbit hole of getting it running on my Apple TV too. It’s now running locally on an A15 Apple TV 4K, using a controller. No streaming from the Mac. It uses nxnative to rewrite the Switch executable and provide the compatibility layer needed to run it on Apple hardware. It isn’t a full source decompilation. The Apple TV took quite a bit of extra work: tvOS support and controller handling, including fixing the confirm button also sending you back to the Apple TV home screen. GitHub: ltomo2/nxnative-tv-builder Mac app download: github.com/ltomo2/nxnative-tv-builder/releases/ta… Upstream nxnative project: seedds/nxnative For this preview, you’ll need an Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 26.6 or later, full Xcode 27 with the tvOS SDK, your own game dump/update and keys, and enough free storage.
