If you ship indie games, you have probably hunted for a small explosion, campfire, or frost nova, then spent longer turning that GIF into something an engine will load. I built SpriteVFX (spritevfx.com) to shorten that path: a browser sprite sheet generator and sprite maker aimed at pixel game effects.
What SpriteVFX is
SpriteVFX is an independent browser editor. You open the site, pick an effect, preview it, recolor the palette if you need a different mood, and export files you can drop into a project. There is no account required. Preview and export run on your device in the browser.
The library currently has 244 playable pixel effects in 21 categories—explosions, fire, ice, lightning, pickups, UI, weather, and more. You can browse the full set on the effects page: spritevfx.com
Exports that fit real pipelines
When an animation looks right, you can export:
- Transparent PNG sprite sheets plus JSON frame data
- A Godot 4 SpriteFrames ZIP ready for Godot workflows
- A PNG sequence for pipelines that prefer individual frames
- An animated GIF for previews, pitches, or docs
That mix covers Godot-first projects as well as Unity and other engines that ingest atlases or frame sequences.
Free vs Pro (no surprises)
- Free: full editor; exports carry a visible watermark; 10 exports per day per browser
- Pro: watermark-free exports and batch packs of up to 20 effects — $6/month or $39/year
Pricing: spritevfx.com
The free tier is enough to evaluate the tool; Pro is for shipping packs without the watermark and for batching several effects at once.
License honesty (MIT / pixelfx)
The effect assets come from patch-gg/pixelfx under the MIT license. SpriteVFX is an independent editor, not the official pixelfx gallery, and it is not affiliated with upstream. The effects are not exclusive—anyone can use the same MIT source. If you redistribute assets, keep the upstream copyright and license notices. The editor itself is a separate product I built around that open library so game makers can preview, recolor, and export without leaving the browser.
Who it is for
SpriteVFX is for indie makers who want a short path from “I need a portal / hit spark / frost nova” to a sheet or sequence they can wire into Godot or Unity.

244 pixel effects for Unity or Godot. Stop redrawing them!
pixelfx is open source, MIT. You get sprite sheets. Claude Code makes more.

Opus 5.5 built a real 3D skeleton that draws itself down to pixels! We then take a 2d side profile projection super cool stuff :)

You can make insane pixel art effects with opus 5.5 now! It writes one, renders it, looks at the frames and fixes what's wrong until it holds up. We made 232 that way, no images, all code, and open sourced the lot with the skill!
