  2. An update for anyone following this: I’ve opened nixpkgs PR #578360 for Zen Browser 1.23.4b. I’ve read the earlier attempts linked here: - PR #347222, which was merged and subsequently reverted. - PR #363992, including the security-maintenance review and the committer-maintainer requirement. - PR #496647, which was closed in favour of PR #530731, now also closed without merging. I understand that the objections concern ongoing security maintenance as well as whether the browser builds. The original security concerns were raised in December 2024, and there is evidence of improvements since then: upstream adopted Firefox release-candidate testing, and a subsequent four-month community comparison reported updates generally arriving within the reviewers’ 72-hour target. That supports reassessing the project’s current security practices rather than judging it solely by the 2024 incident, while still addressing the more recent release gaps and establishing reliable maintenance coverage. Both of these comparisons were from 2024 and 2025 and have matured even more now in 2026, so I see no reason why security patches should be an issue going forward. This implementation addresses several concrete packaging concerns: - Builds from source using the shared Mozilla builder, with PGO, LTO, Zen UI training and upstream’s pinned JetStream extended corpus. - Includes all 41 upstream locales. Packaged localization resources match the official Linux release, with language switching and RTL behavior tested. - Has a measured runtime closure of approximately 1.5 GiB, excluding compiler toolchains and prepared source. These improvements build on the previous discussions; the later attempts already used the shared Mozilla builder. My implementation still uses pinned Surfer for offline source preparation, so I’m not claiming to have fulfilled every earlier request to remove it. I’m willing to maintain the package, but still need an active Nixpkgs committer willing to co-maintain it and handle timely reviews, merges and backports. I understand this is an ongoing responsibility, not just approval of the initial PR. The security cadence concern also needs a substantive answer. Although the packaged engine is current with the desktop advisory checked on October 24, 2026, the published dates for Firefox 157 and Zen 1.23b show a September 29 → October 3 gap. I’d like to establish whether earlier backports covered that interval and what process would prevent security fixes being delayed by UI changes. I would ask to seriously consider allowing Zen into nixpkgs now as a mature browser. Finally, would an interested committer be willing to discuss maintenance coverage? Feedback from the earlier contributors on the source-preparation approach would also be useful.
