  3. # JX-05 Ring Remote + Kindle Paperwhite SE (2024) + KOReader: What Works and What Doesn't JX-05 Ring Remote + Kindle Paperwhite SE (2024) + KOReader: What Works and What Doesn't I recently spent some time getting a JX-05 Bluetooth ring remote working with kindle-button-mapper-rs on my Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (2024, 12th generation) running KOReader. I managed to get all four directional buttons working, but the central button turned out to be much more complicated. Here's what I found. The good news: all four directional buttons work My current configuration uses the ring's directional controls for: - Up / Down: turn pages - Left / Right: decrease / increase brightness The actions are handled by key.sh and auto.sh. My working configuration [settings] debounce_ms = 0 log_buttons = true long_press_ms = 0 repeat_ms = 0 keep_awake = true stick_deadzone = 20 gesture_min_percent = 5 gesture_tolerance = 0.5 [device.jx05_touch] name = JX-05 Touchscreen [gestures] stick_up = 0.0,-0.2 0.0,-0.3 0.0,-0.4 0.0,-0.5 stick_down = 0.0,0.2 0.0,0.3 0.0,0.4 0.0,0.5 stick_left = -0.2,0.0 -0.3,0.0 -0.4,0.0 stick_right = 0.2,0.0 0.3,0.0 0.4,0.0 [device.jx05_touch.stick_left] up = /mnt/us/kindle-button-mapper/scripts/key.sh KEY_PAGEUP down = /mnt/us/kindle-button-mapper/scripts/key.sh KEY_PAGEDOWN left = /mnt/us/kindle-button-mapper/scripts/auto.sh brightness -1 right = /mnt/us/kindle-button-mapper/scripts/auto.sh brightness 1 These paths match my installation. You may need to adjust them if your setup is different. The central button: three problems 1. The input event is extremely short In my tests, the central button generated a BTN_TOUCH event (code 330) lasting approximately 3 ms, without corresponding ABS_X or ABS_Y events. That makes ordinary long-press detection problematic: the observed touch event ends almost immediately. 2. Isolating the central button breaks the other buttons The central button can be mapped to an action. However, the isolation methods I tried caused the directional buttons to be interpreted as the central button too. I haven't found a reliable way to separate the central button from the directional controls without breaking the latter. I can't yet say whether the root cause is the mapper, the input-event structure exposed by the device, or an interaction between them. 3. Holding it for too long turns the ring off The central button doubles as the ring's hardware power switch. Holding it for approximately 5 seconds turns the ring off. This happens at the hardware level, so changing the Kindle configuration cannot remove that limitation. A few other things I learned - The ring appeared as two input devices in my tests: event2 (Consumer Control) and event3 (Touchscreen). - The directional actions use the touchscreen device. - The directional “swipes” appear to be represented by sequences of ABS_X/ABS_Y events rather than actual finger movement. - For my setup, directional mappings belong in [device.jx05_touch.stick_left]; [gestures] is used for gesture templates. - If the mapper refuses to start, check /mnt/us/kindle-button-mapper/boot_attempts. After three failed starts, autostart may be disabled. Resetting the counter with echo 0 > /mnt/us/kindle-button-mapper/boot_attempts lets you try again. Current result The four directional buttons are working for page turning and brightness control. The central button remains an unresolved issue because the tested isolation methods interfere with directional input, and its hardware power-off function limits long presses. If you've managed to get the central button working independently on a JX-05, I'd be interested to hear how you did it. Thanks to zampierilucas for kindle-button-mapper-rs!

  4. I did it! Bluetooth Kindle page turner is officially working When Amazon announced their new Kindle Click, I was so disappointed to learn that the Bluetooth clicker would not be compatible with my older Kindle Paperwhite. I did not appreciate feeling like I needed to buy a new Kindle just for one feature I really wanted, when the hardware on the one I already own was fully capable of using a Bluetooth page turner. So I decided to turn here. After learning as much as I could from the posts on this page, I decided to take the plunge. I jailbroke my kindle and purchased a Bluetooth clicker I hoped I could make compatible with my setup, and look, it's working! It was somehow easier than I expected it to be. I ran into a few little hiccups, like not being able to set up the key commands at first, but a little bit of fiddling and it's working great now. ---How I did it--- My Kindle is an 11th gen Kinfle Paperwhite jailbroken with SpiderCat. It has KOReader installed with the SimpleUI plugin as the base. I purchased a HANLINYUE Free2 page turner from amazon. It says it doesn’t support Kindle, but I think that's a disclaimer before a device is jailbroken because it works fine with this. I used the Kindle HID Passthrough Kindle HID Passthrough. It runs its own Bluetooth system so the Kindle can pair remotes, and it comes with a button mapper and a KOReader plugin. Once that was installed, I turned on the page turner and set it to volume mode. Then I went to BT manager, scanned for devices, and paired the bluetooth remote. Once complete, be sure to check the device info on the next screen says connected and the protocol is BLE. make sure you click the little toggle for start on boot on the device page. I didn't want to have to repair it all the time. Next you should pair the device in KOReader settings (at the top not the bottom simple UI) > network > BT Manager - HID Passthrough > Scan for devices, and it picked up the remote. Then in the same location, I went to key mapping > chose my device free 2 > map a button... > then from there you click a button and choose what you want it to do. I was a little overwhelmed at first by the options but just click favorites and you can see page forward and page back easily from there. When I first tried, I hadn't made sure my device was paired in Koreader, and the KOReader wasn't detecting any button presses when trying to map the buttons. Once I scanned for the device in KOReader and it established that connection, everything was smooth sailing. It turns pages in the regular Kindle UI just like i wanted! Thank you r/kindlejailbreak for helping me build the confidence and the know-how to get a Bluetooth clicker working without succumbing to the need to buy a new Kindle. [insert meme about having a perfectly good kindle at home here]

  5. Bluetooth Page Turner (Kindle Colorsoft SE) Hi, everyone! I've seen people interested on getting these bluetooth page turner devices to work on kindle (with two keys). I just got mine and these are the instructions I followed using Claude, in case anyone else wants to do it too: Plugin: kindle-hid-passthrough, Project page: https://github.com/zampierilucas/kindle-hid-passthrough Device: Kindle Colorsoft SE (probably works on all the latest kindle models) Page turner: bought on Amazon Spain, so I'm not going to link it, there a lot of similar ones available on AliExpress too. 1. On your PC, open the project’s Releases page and download kindle-hid-passthrough-armv7.tar.xz. 2. Unpack it on your PC (right-click → Extract All; use 7-Zip if Windows can’t). 3. Plug in the Kindle and copy the unpacked folder to the Kindle drive’s top level. Rename it khp-release, so the file khp-release/scripts/install.sh exists. 4. Eject the Kindle. In KOReader, open the Terminal emulator (Tools → More tools). Type exactly: sh /mnt/us/khp-release/scripts/install.sh. Here /mnt/us is just the top level of the Kindle drive you saw on your PC. Press Enter. 5. The installer shows a numbered menu. Option 1 installs the program, and the KOReader plugin is installed automatically if KOReader is present. Choose that one. Skip the other options (autostart, udev rules, extras). They aren’t needed for a page turner, and a related project warned that such extras have caused boot loops on some firmware. 6. Restart KOReader. 7. Pair the page turner. Put it in pairing mode. In KOReader open the top menu, then the cog icon (Settings) → Network → BT Manager - HID Passthrough. Start the daemon, run Scan, pick your page turner, and then connect it from the paired devices list. 8. Map the two keys. Go to the same menu → Key mappings, pick your device, tap “Map a button…”, press one key on the page turner, and choose its action. Set one key to "next page" and the other to "previous page". Note: At first I couldn't find the next or previous page option it was under "Favorites" instead of inside "Reader". Hope that helps!
