Joey for Reddit and Third-Party Reddit Apps Prepared by Manus for The Society for AI Collaboration Studies Date: November 2, 2026 Overview This guide covers patching an existing Joey APK. Third-party apps tend to be more AI-friendly because they support workflows, but they may lack features added to Reddit since third-party-app support was deprecated. Reddit’s API announcement separately described continued free access for moderator tools and moderation bots, as well as non-commercial accessibility-focused apps. [1] [2] Reddit API change Reddit’s updated API policy took effect on July 1, 2023. On that date, Reddit introduced free Data API limits of 100 queries per minute per OAuth client ID for OAuth-authenticated access and 10 queries per minute without OAuth. Reddit also announced a rate of $0.24 per 1,000 API calls for third-party apps requiring higher usage limits. [1] Reddit’s updated Data API Terms and Developer Terms became effective on June 19, 2023. [1] Third-party apps and workflow support Third-party apps tend to be more AI-friendly because they support workflows. Their workflow support can include configurable navigation, repeatable actions, filtering, and interfaces that can be adapted to a process. Features that may be missing Third-party Reddit apps such as Joey may lack features added to Reddit after third-party-app support was deprecated. A patch can restore selected API calls or authentication behavior, but it cannot automatically add functionality introduced later in Reddit’s official apps, newer API surfaces, or Reddit services outside the old client’s code. Potential gaps include newer moderation surfaces, account controls, chat or messaging behavior, recommendation features, media handling, and other changes made after Joey’s last available release. Current Joey patching route To patch an existing Joey APK, use Morphe Manager with the Patcheddit patch bundle. Patcheddit lists Joey, Joey Pro, and Joey Dev package families as supported targets and provides compatibility patches. It does not distribute the original Joey APK. [3] The relevant current releases are: - Morphe Manager 2.3.0, released October 30, 2026. [4] - Patcheddit 2.0.3, released October 30, 2026. Its changelog lists fixes for comment loading and gallery loading across supported Reddit apps. [5] The patching process is: 1. Install Morphe Manager on Android. 2. Add the Patcheddit source using Morphe’s source controls or the Patcheddit add-source link. 3. Import the existing Joey APK from device storage. 4. Select the Joey-compatible patches. 5. Build the patched APK. 6. Save and install the patched output. A clean installation may be required because the patched APK is signed with a different key from the original Joey release. For Joey Pro, the supported package identifier is o.o.joey.pro. Patcheddit is a patch source, not a distributor of the original Pro APK. Check the APK package ID before patching. Patcheddit 2.0.1: API fixes for Boost (other apps coming soon) github.com/wchill/patcheddit/releases/tag/v2.0.1 Based on some testing that was between me, the devs of Apollo Reborn, and the Continuum/Slide dev (at different points in time), Reddit is starting to restrict API access by _route_. 403 errors related to tapping on "X more replies" is caused by this - RedReader doesn't use the /api/morechildren API route, so presumably Reddit decided to block that route because it wouldn't affect legitimate RedReader users. The same restrictions apply to /api/info and /by_id, though I think these won't affect users in general. I've fixed this issue in Boost by hijacking the /api/morechildren calls and replacing them with calls to /comments/<post id>/comment/<comment id>.json which is what RedReader uses, and will extend this fix plus the gallery fix to all other apps supported by Patcheddit soon. This does seem to be dependent on the client ID, but I would not recommend switching back to your own unless you want your app to stop working on January 12, 2027. Reddit is blocking all non-approved client IDs starting on that date.

Patcheddit 2.0: Boost 1.14 support + a few new patches github.com/wchill/patcheddit/releases/tag/v2.0.0 I finally ported most of brealorg's Boost patches back to Patcheddit. This changelog is relative to brealorg's last release. Support for 1.12.12 has been dropped, and 1.14.1 from GitHub is the only currently supported version. If you are still using a patched 1.12.12, you can patch 1.14.1 with Morphe Manager and install on top of your existing version. The following patches were added: - OAuth access/refresh token import + export - you can now copy your login session and use it on another device, which can be useful in cases where reddit blocks your login on a new device. - Exception logging patch - errors (both regular and fatal/crashing) are logged to files which are available in the Morphe settings menu. The following patches were modified: - Image upload patches - These were split into 3 separate patches for maintainability. - Boost Morphe settings - Material Design themes were removed to make it easier to maintain. This patch now only injects the Morphe settings page and does not introduce theming changes. - Spoof client ID - Prefills RedReader 1.27's client information in Settings > Developer > Setup guide (this menu was added in 1.14). Unfortunately, the client ID has been publicly available via Google search for some time now, so there's no point in having users go through the whole process to find the client ID anymore. - Standardize Boost bottom navigation - fixes an issue that was reported by a user where the subreddit list pops up twice on 1.14. The following patches were removed: - Fix random subreddits (fixed in 1.14) - Update target SDK to 35 (obsolete because 1.14 targets SDK 36 already) - Fix YouTube external fallback (fixed in 1.14) - Open reddit media links (fixed in 1.14) - Fix audio missing in downloads (fixed in 1.14) - Custom synccit URL (added in 1.14) - Fix Boost comments Lemmy-style toolbar UI (obsolete due to 1.14 theme changes) - Fix download completed notification visibility (fixed in 1.14) - Fix Boost video rewind back buffer (fixed in 1.14) - Disable ads patch (obsolete because 1.14 removes ads) - Theme Boost settings icons (obsolete due to 1.14 theme changes) - Fix slow Giphy loading (fixed in 1.14) - Fix Boost redgifs loading (fixed in 1.14)
