VoiceStudio passed 85,000 stars: why this local voice toolkit is worth a look, and the licence catch Our latest RepoQuarry article looks at VoiceStudio passing 85,000 GitHub stars. The interesting part is what you can actually do with it, not just the star count. Disclosure: I’m Obi, the builder of RepoQuarry. I researched this for our blog; I’m not a VoiceStudio maintainer. This is a source-based overview, not a hands-on audio-quality benchmark. Why it caught my attention VoiceStudio brings voice cloning, dubbing, transcription and audiobook work into a desktop app. Running those workflows locally gives people an alternative to uploading every recording to a hosted voice service. For me, the appeal is bringing several audio jobs into one place while letting you choose the engine. That makes it worth investigating for personal narration experiments, language projects or processing your own recordings. Whether it replaces a paid tool depends on your actual audio, hardware and model choice. The numbers behind the attention Our RepoQuarry snapshot on 25 October 2026 recorded: - 85,019 GitHub stars - 10,609 gained in seven days - 37,473 gained in 27 days - 9,412 forks Those are dated readings, not live counters. Stars show interest, not proof of audio quality or security. We also only started taking daily readings on 15 October, so there is not enough local baseline history to call this growth faster than its normal pace. The article separates those readings from the estimated earlier chart history. The practical trade-offs CPU use is supported but slower. NVIDIA and Apple Silicon acceleration are available. Intel Macs need a backend elsewhere, and model requirements vary. The licence distinction matters: the application is AGPL-3.0, while the default OmniVoice pretrained model is non-commercial. Other engines have separate terms. A paid app licence does not automatically clear model or voice rights. Clone only voices you have permission to use. That is why I would not describe it as an unrestricted free replacement for every ElevenLabs workflow. It is a promising local option with specific limits to check. Credit to the people building it Credit to creator Palash Debnath / debpalash, Shimul Debnath / velixio, and the VoiceStudio contributors. Palash’s own explanation of why he built it is worth reading. RepoQuarry’s full breakdown, charts and source links. Primary references: project README, application licence notice, OmniVoice model card. If you have tried it, which engine and hardware did you use, and what was the first thing that worked well or fell short?
