What it does
- It restores the native Windows 10 Alt+Tab switcher when you press Alt+Tab.
- It uses the built-in Windows components, so no custom window or panel is drawn.
- It does not install a global keyboard hook.
- It does not write to the Windows registry. The only thing it stores is a small crash-guard value in Windhawk's own mod storage (see below).
Requirements
- Windows 11
- 64-bit explorer.exe.
- Windhawk installed.
How to use
1. Install the mod in Windhawk and enable it.
2. Press Alt+Tab. The Windows 10 style switcher should appear.
3. To remove it, disable or uninstall the mod in Windhawk.
Crash guard
Before the mod asks the shell to create the Windows 10 switcher, it records a marker in Windhawk's mod storage and clears it right after the call. If explorer.exe crashes while the switcher is being created, the marker is still set at the next start. The mod then stays disabled for that exact build of twinui.pcshell.dll and leaves the stock Alt+Tab alone, so that a bad build can never put the shell in a crash loop. A Windows update that replaces twinui.pcshell.dll re-enables the mod automatically. To re-enable it by hand, turn on Reset crash guard in the settings, restart the mod, then turn the option off again.
Windows 10 explorer.exe
When the mod runs inside a Windows 10 explorer.exe that was placed in the Windhawk LegacyStore folder (for example by the Win10 taskbar on Win11 24H2 or 25H2 mod), it is detected automatically and the call-site fallback is always used, whatever the setting below says.
Notes
- Do not use this mod together with another Alt+Tab replacement mod.
- The mod only targets explorer.exe and only affects the Alt+Tab switcher.
- While the mod is active it answers reads of HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AltTabSettings with 0, so the mod takes precedence over that setting. For the same reason it conflicts with the Legacy Alt+Tab dialog mod: enable one or the other.
- At start-up the mod logs the Windows build and the identity of twinui.pcshell.dll. Please include these lines when you report a problem.
- If Alt+Tab does not change, check the Windhawk log for the entries of this mod and open an issue to notify the author of the modification about the problem.
The gate hook and the XAML to DirectComposition host redirect are the approach used by ExplorerPatcher by valinet.

ClassicWindowSwitcher 1.3
ClassicWindowSwitcher 1.3
ClassicWindowSwitcher
- This mod brings back the classic Alt+Tab dialog, even on Windows 11 24H2+, which removed the old switcher in win32kfull.sys.
- This is a direct port of my ClassicWindowSwitcher, which is a fork of valinet's SimpleWindowSwitcher.
- Please do not use this mod with other Alt+Tab mods. They might conflict with this mod.
- If you are using an alternative shell like Explorer7, have disabled the modern Alt+Tab UI with AltTabSettings registry, or if you prefer to have the classic Alt+Tab restored (on 24H2+) even without Explorer running, enable the last option in the mod settings.
- If you enable this setting, you may have to restart Explorer after disabling this mod to get the modern switcher UI back.

Differences with the original classic switcher
- It works even on Windows 11 24H2 and later.
- It shows UWP icons properly.
- You can navigate through the items with a mouse, the mouse wheel, or arrow keys.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Tab to keep the switcher open after releasing the Alt key.
- You can close a focused window by pressing the Del key while the switcher is active.
- It features many configurable options.
- It can optionally show a per-application window list when you press Alt+Tilde.
