My first app: BugJug an app that lets my neurodivergent daughter collect infinite bugs I just finished building my first ever iPhone/iPad app Called BugJug (it’s been in TestFlight testing with a private group for a while and just hit the public App Store! I've been testing it for a couple of months now) and would love feedback on it! apps.apple.com Problem: My neurodivergent kiddo loves searching for and collecting insects outside. She really liked to put them in jars and keep them, the only problem (beyond me not liking bugs quite as much) was it was impossible to keep a large number of bugs without them not being appropriately cared for. But, I still wanted to nurture the instinct to research and collect insects. So, I built what I believe is a fairly unique app, where you not only can identify insects you find outside, but they also get turned into virtual pets inside of jars that you can interact with and care for. Almost like a virtual terrarium. You can even catch a caterpillar with the app and then watch it turn into a butterfly over several days! Everything is fully offline and no personal data is stored. I use a combination of 2 local models on the device to do the identification and cover several thousand common insects (most kinds that kids will run into outside). The app goes heavy on the education aspect teaching about different insect types, and even allowing exploring different areas you don't live in to collect insects that are native to that area virtually. Pricing: The app is free permanently with a one time 4.99 unlock to allow infinite bugs to be collected and to unlock more places to explore virtually. Comparison: There are tons of insect identification apps, but I couldn't find anything with a similar over all concept to this. The most unique thing being the virtual pets and digitization of the insects. 2 Concrete examples: - Seek by iNaturalist: inaturalist.org absolute phenomenal for bug identification and requires internet - buglens: apps.apple.com similar alternative, again no caring for or digitization component About me: I'm a Software Engineer unemployed for the first time after working professionally in the field for almost 20 years. I wrote a lot of Open Source in that time, most popular of which was isort a Python import sorter/formatter. You can see more here: github.com/timothycrosley
