Features:
- Faster downloads: Multi-connection segmented downloading to make the most of your bandwidth.
- Browser integration: Works with Chrome, Firefox, Edge and other popular browsers: XDM takes over downloads from the browser automatically, so every file gets the speed boost without copying a link.
- Video grabber: Detects and saves videos from streaming sites, including HLS (.m3u8) and MPEG-DASH (.mpd) streams, muxed to MP4 with no external tools. Pick a subtitle track and get it as an .srt file, timed to match the video.
- Resume anything: Recovers downloads interrupted by network drops, crashes or power loss; refresh expired links without starting over.
- Bulk social media downloads: Save every video and image from a social media profile in a single click. Video and audio tracks are merged into ready-to-play MP4s, and ads are left out.
- Scheduler & queues: Start and stop downloads on a schedule, limit parallel downloads, shut down when done.
- Proxies & auth: HTTP and SOCKS proxies, and server/proxy authentication.
- Cross-platform: Native-feeling app on Windows, macOS and Linux, with light and dark themes.

XDM 9 released: free, open-source download manager for Windows, macOS and Linux
Hi everyone! I'm the developer of XDM (Xtreme Download Manager), a free, open-source download manager for Windows, macOS and Linux. Over the years, users reported a number of long-standing issues, so I spent this release modernizing XDM: a cleaner, faster core, a refreshed UI and fixes for those bugs. XDM 9 is now out.
What it does
- Speeds up downloads with multiple connections and resumes broken downloads exactly where they stopped
- Browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave and more: catches downloads and detects videos on a page
- Bulk-downloads all images, documents or videos on a page, filtered by file type
- Categories, per-category folders and a scheduler
Some things I learned while modernizing it
- Dropping ffmpeg: to save HLS/DASH streams, XDM used to bundle ffmpeg just to merge segments into MP4. I replaced it with a small muxer written in pure Kotlin, so there's one less big binary to ship and sign.
- No more "assembling" step: downloads now write straight into the final file, so big downloads finish the moment the last byte arrives.
- Desktop UI without Electron: it's built with Kotlin and Swing (FlatLaf theme), which keeps it much lighter than a bundled web browser.
It's free, has no ads or telemetry, and is fully open source. It's been around since 2013.
