RAWmakase GitHub Overview: Rust, GPU Rendering, and Lightroom-Compatible Editing
rawmakase by pch: pch/rawmakase
RAWmakase is a Rust-based, local-first RAW photo editor aimed at photographers moving away from tightly integrated proprietary catalogs. This overview shows how its Lightroom-style Library and Develop layout connects to a LibRaw decoding bridge, the develop::gpu wgpu/WGSL rendering path, and platform backends including Metal and Vulkan. It also covers the software-adapter fallback when compatible GPU drivers are unavailable, SQLite catalog persistence, and lazy ONNX Runtime loading for subject and sky masking.
Beyond the desktop UI, the project's headless CLI supports catalog import, RAW inspection, embedded-thumbnail extraction, XMP-driven rendering, and profile import. The MCP integration uses local stdio/IPC so external agents can request previews or save edits without cloud authentication. Deployment discussion spans macOS 15+ baselines, Linux glibc 2.39+ requirements, Windows 10+, AppImage/FUSE constraints, and Arch build caveats.
The tradeoffs matter: RAWmakase is early software in active development, its sRGB output clips wide-gamut color, strict camera-profile matching can halt a render, and future releases may change tone-mapping behavior. Treat it as a promising open-source Lightroom-style editor whose compatibility and color-science limits deserve review before production use.

RAWmakase 0.4.0 is now available. RAW files are now processed by our own Rust-based decoders, about 20% faster, with better Lightroom rendering parity. A fundamental change in the internals. Full release notes: github.com/pch/rawmakase/releases/tag/v0.4.0 I'm sure this introduces some new problems, so if you notice anything weird, go straight to GitHub Issues. 🙏
RAWmakase GitHub Overview: Rust, GPU Rendering, and Lightroom-Compatible Editing rawmakase by pch: pch/rawmakase RAWmakase is a Rust-based, local-first RAW photo editor aimed at photographers moving away from tightly integrated proprietary catalogs. Its Rust and GPU pipeline, local catalog, command-line tooling, and MCP bridge are useful concepts for technical photographers, while camera support, profile availability, driver compatibility, and changing color science remain practical review points. Another small release with big changes: · you can now edit JPEG, PNG & TIFF files (h/t @priard) · better performance on slow GPUs (h/t @lk_devmindscape) · UI tweaks (crop & masks no longer open an extra panel) More: github.com/pch/rawmakase/releases/tag/v0.3.2 Next: agents are currently training neural networks for adaptive tones (highlights, shadows). Promising, but needs more time. Also, it took me almost 2 hours to cut this release 😩 (thx to macOS notarization & Intel builds) need to work on that too...
v0.3.1 is out · improved rendering and camera calibration · better shadows/highlights (still work to do here) · improved As Shot white balance · much better noise reduction · remote inference for AI masks (h/t @JoshuaSWarren) more: github.com/pch/rawmakase/releases/tag/v0.3.1
RAWmakase v0.3.0 is out. A big release with new features and new bugs! · refreshed UI · new "synchronize folder" feature in Library · updated rendering engine · multiple fixes from contributors More: github.com/pch/rawmakase/releases/tag/v0.3.0 ⚠️ Warning: the new rendering engine should perform better overall but it has some known issues for certain types of photos (e.g. dark scenes where you want to bump shadows +100, high DR scenes) and still doesn't recover highlights as well as Lightroom - but the new version brings it much closer. ⚠️ Warning 2: your already-edited photos will run through the new engine, so they may look slightly different. Most of the issues are already documented on GitHub and should be fixed in v0.3.1. I now have a ~400GB dataset to test rendering and it's easier to catch problems. It just takes time to run these tests, try a fix, repeat. This is my focus for the next few releases: improve the rendering parity compared to Lightroom, finalize the testing suite and dataset. And find ways to speed up the testing and CI, because it's a huge bottleneck.

RAWmakase /raw·muh·KAH·say/, RAW + omakase by Piotr Chmolowski. RAWmakase is a fast, non-destructive RAW photo developer for Linux, macOS and Windows, written in Rust. It opens RAW files from the cameras LibRaw supports, develops them with a Lightroom-style set of controls, and exports JPEG or 16-bit TIFF. It can also import a Lightroom Classic catalog with its ratings, flags, labels, keywords and compatible develop settings, without ever writing to the original catalog or your photos.
