  1. STATUS UPDATE 3: The 30 minutes to hour long crashes seem to come from CEF. The version of Chrome built to be embedded into other programs for limited browser functionality. Y'know, like the web source in OBS. They're still figuring it out My web sources aren't important, so I'll try gutting it.

OBS Studio 33.0 Released: Chromium 150, Improved Snapping, New Plugin Locations OBS Studio 33 is now available for everyone! If you already have OBS installed, the next time you launch it you’ll receive an update alert. If you’re downloading OBS for the first time, or would like to use a portable version, you can download it from our website. If you dismiss the update notification, it can be triggered manually from the Help menu on both Windows and macOS. Chromium 150 It has taken a lot of effort (and we're still finding bugs and edge cases) but we've finally updated from Chromium 127. This powers browser sources, browser docks, and service integration (YouTube/Twitch login). Once the internal profiles have been migrated, which happens one time on first launch after updating, everything should continue to work as before. This provides web developers with a ton of new functionality and should hopefully provide improved reliability. If you're a web developer, you can browse the list of 498 new features here. If you're interested in the complex work involved in this update, you can read about it here. New Homes for Plugins We're continuing deep, complex work towards a fully featured Plugin Manager within OBS. As part of that effort, this release changes the default location of built-in plugins (now labelled 'core') and third-party plugins. Plugins that are installed to the old locations will still work but will be flagged with a Legacy indicator in the plugin manager. In the future these plugins will not be loaded. Plugin authors should update their plugin installers and guidance with the following information. Right now you don't need to do anything. Your plugins will continue to work in Legacy locations until at least OBS Studio 34.0, which would be scheduled to release around August 2027. You can find full details about these changes here. If you're a plugin developer, please be sure to read the KB article and release updates to your plugins using the new directory structure. Improved Source Snapping Source snapping allows you to align sources within your canvas easily. It can be temporarily disabled while holding Ctrl, or permanently disabled in General Settings. - New visual indicator added - Sources now snap along the entire axis instead of only when directly touching - Sources no longer snap to hidden sources Numbered Spinboxes - Typing is no longer mysteriously blocked in some situations - Numbers are no longer cut off in some situations - Values now update only after pressing Enter and Enter does not close the window - Holding Shift + Up/Down now advances multiple steps at a time - Dragging the cursor inside the input but outside the text itself now works properly A Ton More Changes As this is a major release, some deprecated functions have been removed, so some plugins may fail to load. Be sure to check for plugin updates before updating, and if you run into issues either try disabling the plugins via the Plugin Manager (Tools menu), try running in Safe Mode (disables plugins, scripting, websocket server), and report any issues either to the OBS developers or to the developers of misbehaving plugins. You can find the full release notes in the update dialog or the GitHub Releases page.

FFmpeg Explained: The Hidden Tool Behind Almost Every Video FFmpeg (ffmpeg.org · source: git.ffmpeg.org) is a free, open source toolkit to record, convert and stream audio and video, and many other apps build on its libraries. In this explainer, part of our Software Explored series, we look at what FFmpeg is, how video encoding actually works inside it, and why so many apps quietly depend on it. What is FFmpeg? It's three command line tools (ffmpeg, ffprobe and ffplay) plus seven libraries, including libavcodec and libavformat, that other programs build on. We explain containers vs codecs (MP4, MKV, H.264, AAC), the ffmpeg pipeline (demux, decode, filter, encode, mux), and stream copy, which skips re-encoding entirely. Then the commands worth knowing: using ffmpeg as a video converter (MOV to MP4), encoding with libx264 using -crf, -preset and -pix_fmt, remuxing with -c copy, trimming with -ss and -t, extracting audio with -vn, resizing with the scale filter, and inspecting files with ffprobe. We also cover filtergraphs (scale, crop, overlay, loudnorm), streaming (RTMP and HLS), and hardware acceleration (-hwaccel, NVENC and Quick Sync). Finally: where FFmpeg shows up (VLC, OBS Studio, HandBrake, Blender and Chromium, per their own code and docs), the LGPL 2.1+ license and its optional GPL parts explained, and the honest limits: option order, differing builds, patents, and security updates. 5. I noticed that since it implies also Debian Stable/Trixie. The reason is it has removed support for ffmpeg/libavcodec < v8. obs-studio#13964

  7. This should not be the case, at most you'd need to build the CEF wrapper, but the OBS team provides precompiled CEF builds for all platforms [0] or you can use the builds provided for free by Spotify [1]. [0] obs-studio#13900 [1] cef-builds.spotifycdn.com

  8. There was a guy who was banned from the OBS github for submitting an AI pr, so he forked it, rewrote it in Rust and is fixing bugs left and right. obs-rust/obs-studio Their policy outright bans AI. So regardless if you support or oppose this policy, it is going to be fun to see if the fork becomes significantly better than the original or not. github.com/obsproject/obs-studio/blob/master/CONT…

  9. Is this on macOS [0] or another platform? I don't think I've heard of this issue - if you have a log of such a session, please create a bug report [1]. [0] obs-studio#10596 [1] github.com/obsproject/obs-studio/issues

  10. You can find why it was complicated [0] and why it took so long [1] on GitHub. I do wish I had been faster on it. That said, the RCE required the user to be using a vibe-coded web-based chat overlay that didn't properly sanitize chatter inputs, so has a (hopefully) limited scope.
