Getting a norns in 2026: new, used, kits and DIY
The most common question, so here's the map. Short version: monome's norns is out of stock with no date for the next run, and monome no longer makes the DIY shield. But the shield is open-source hardware, so other people build and sell it, and you can build one yourself.
Last checked: October 22, 2026. Prices and stock change fast. If something here is out of date, say so in the comments and I'll update it. Sellers are listed because they turned up, not as endorsements: check reviews before you buy.

1. norns, from monome
The original: an aluminum block with a battery, a headphone amp and the cleanest audio path. $900 when available. Right now monome lists it as out of stock, with no estimate yet for the next edition. Their newsletter announces stock updates; questions go to help@monome.org.
2. Used
Reverb, eBay, local listings, and posts with the marketplace flair here. Before you buy, ask for:
- a photo or video of it running a script, and its norns version (SYSTEM > UPDATE)
- whether all three encoders turn smoothly without jumping
- for an original norns, how long the battery lasts
- for a shield, which Raspberry Pi is inside (3B, 3B+ or 4B) and whether a power supply and SD card come with it
3. norns shield, assembled or as a kit
The shield is a small board that sits on a Raspberry Pi 3B, 3B+ or 4B and runs the regular norns software: the same scripts, maiden, grid and arc support. Compared with a norns it has no battery and a 3D-printed or acrylic case. monome designed it, stopped making it in 2022 and doesn't support or repair it anymore, but the design is open source (GPL-3.0).
Seen in October 2026:
- Pusherman: sells norns shields and other Monome gear both as kits and assembled units. Ships worldwide.
- Freepoet have Norns shield pro with extra connections and internal battery and Moira, an Eurorack Norns module. Also have assembled and DIY kits for Grid and other devices on the ecosystem.
- Denki-oto(okyeron): okyeron designed shieldXL, a variant of the norns shield with extended ports and sells them as kits. Eventually comes into stock.
- Synthrotek: a kit (about $225) or assembled (about $300), and a populated PCB if you want to do the rest yourself.
- Tindie, Denjhang's Retro Hardware: complete unit with a Pi 3B+, about $399
- Etsy and eBay: complete units, usually $300–400
4. Build it yourself
- monome's shield guide covers the Pi models, SD card, power supply and flashing the norns image. Pick the image for your Pi (pi3 or pi4) and your board's audio codec from norns-image releases.
- From scratch: the norns-shield repo has the schematic, Eagle files, BOM and case files. The board is surface-mount, so it's a project for people comfortable with SMT soldering; a populated PCB skips that part.
- Cases: many 3D-printed and laser-cut designs are shared on lines, plus simple laser-cut panels.
- fates is a different, unofficial Pi board by okyeron (Pi 3B+ or 4B) that runs norns software. Its repo was last updated in 2022, and it asks you to update manually rather than from SYSTEM > UPDATE. Check its lines thread for current boards.
Budget for a complete DIY shield: around $300–400 with the Pi, SD card, power supply and case.
5. Before you have one
- Read the norns docs and browse scripts on norns.community or splines to see what people make.
- seamstress is a Lua art engine for your computer from the same community. It talks to grid and MIDI, but it's its own platform: norns scripts don't run on it unchanged.
Friends
From monome today: grid and arc are available. crow was discontinued in October 2025, so it's used-only now.
