Litecoin's Origin: Why Someone Tweaked Bitcoin's Code in 2011 In October 2011, Charlie Lee was a Google engineer poking at Bitcoin's open-source code as a side project. The forums were full of copycat coins whose founders quietly mined millions for themselves first (Tenebrix launched with about 7 million coins for its founder). Lee helped build Fairbrix to strip that premine, and it broke. So he forked Bitcoin's code into a brand-new chain (not a split of Bitcoin itself) and turned three knobs: about 2.5-minute blocks, scrypt mining, and an 84 million coin cap, four times Bitcoin's 21 million. He called it silver to Bitcoin's gold. Litecoin launched October 13, 2011, with thousands already mining from day one.
