Playload Arcade: games in 3 KB of code, shared as URLs
Source and documentation (MIT): kitao/playload
Play the collection: kitao.dev
I made Playload so a game's code could travel inside a URL posted on X. People started sharing their own games, and I've now collected 29 games and experiments in Playload Arcade.
The four pictured here are Prism Panic by rukasufall, minidius by Gakuchang, VAHAGN by sslab, and Dungeon Escape by frenchbread. They're all below 3,000 bytes of compressed game code, despite taking quite different approaches to that budget.
Why 3,000 bytes? After compression and URL encoding, that's enough to keep the game URL within X's length limit. Unicode emoji are available as built-in 8x8 pixel-art sprites, custom character graphics can be defined in code, and music uses ZX Spectrum 128-style PLAY strings. The engine is loaded separately; each link carries the game's code.
Open a game from Arcade to play it and inspect its source in the browser editor. Change it and you get another URL to share. Bookmarking that URL saves that version of the code.
What would you spend those 3,000 bytes on?

Playload: A game engine with URLs for cartridges
Playload stores a game's source code in its URL. The 3 KB limit on compressed JavaScript is there so that URL can be posted on X. Open a game link to play, edit the code and share your own version. Bookmark the URL to save the code.
Source and documentation: kitao/playload
Unicode emoji are available as built-in 8×8 pixel-art sprites, and music and sound effects use ZX Spectrum 128-style PLAY notation. You can make a game without preparing separate image or audio files.
Glyph Quest is an included dungeon-game sample. People are already sharing their own games as URLs on X, including Dungeon Escape by frenchbread, a first-person maze game with background music.

Pyxel: a retro game engine for Python (18k stars)
What it does
All text below is quoted directly from the project README.
>Pyxel (/ˈpɪksəl/) is a retro game engine for Python.
>With simple specifications inspired by retro gaming consoles, such as displaying only 16 colors and supporting 4 sound channels, you can easily enjoy making pixel-art-style games.
>Pyxel is open source under the MIT License and free to use. Let's start making retro games with Pyxel!
>Also, this project is developed by one person, kept going by your GitHub stars. If you enjoy it, please give it a star!
