NASA's Apollo 11 Code Is on GitHub — And It Reveals How the Landing Almost Failed
On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 was descending toward the Moon when its guidance computer reported a 1202 program alarm. Mission Control told the astronauts to continue.
Why didn't the alarm end the landing?
The answer is still there—in the original Apollo 11 source code, preserved on GitHub.
In this documentary, we open the actual assembly-language listings that powered the Apollo Guidance Computer and try to understand how they worked.
How did NASA guide a spacecraft with just 2,048 words of writable memory? Why was the code written in octal? What did its strange instructions mean? And how did its operating system recover when the computer became overloaded during one of the most consequential moments in human history?
We'll explore the real Apollo 11 software, including:
- The Command Module's Comanche 055 and Lunar Module's Luminary 099 programs.
- Magnetic core-rope memory, fixed-point arithmetic, and the AGC's unusual architecture.
- The software interpreter and mathematical equations used for lunar landing guidance.
- The DSKY interface astronauts used to communicate with the computer.
- Real source-code routines with names like BURN, BABY, BURN.
- The Executive, priority scheduling, and the famous 1201 and 1202 alarms.
This film is also a tribute to Margaret Hamilton (1936–2026), who led the onboard flight-software effort at MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory, and to the remarkable engineers whose work helped make the Moon landing possible.
More than half a century later, we can still read their code.

TIL that the Apollo 11 Source Code is available on GitHub and even back then they were cracking jokes in the comments of their code

Shipping code where the lunar landing engine burn control is named BURN BABY BURN is gangster as hell.

I was today years old to know that the source code of apollo 11 flight software is open-source. Crazy filenames and comments! One is called Burn Baby Burn!
Found it at chrislgarry/apollo-11
Btw, It ran on a 1.024 MHz clock with 3KB of RAM. t.co

🚀 Ever wondered how humanity actually landed on the moon with less compute power than a modern key fob?
Dive straight into the original Apollo 11 Guidance Computer source code.
