Apollo-11

What does it do?

This repository contains the original Apollo 11 Guidance Computer (AGC) source code for the command and lunar modules. [1a][1b] It is intended as a repository for the original source code, and it welcomes pull requests (proposed code changes) for issues between the transcriptions and the original scans. [2]

NASA's Apollo 11 Code Is on GitHub — And It Reveals How the Landing Almost Failed On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 was descending toward the Moon when its guidance computer reported a 1202 program alarm. Mission Control told the astronauts to continue. Why didn't the alarm end the landing? The answer is still there—in the original Apollo 11 source code, preserved on GitHub. In this documentary, we open the actual assembly-language listings that powered the Apollo Guidance Computer and try to understand how they worked. How did NASA guide a spacecraft with just 2,048 words of writable memory? Why was the code written in octal? What did its strange instructions mean? And how did its operating system recover when the computer became overloaded during one of the most consequential moments in human history? We'll explore the real Apollo 11 software, including: - The Command Module's Comanche 055 and Lunar Module's Luminary 099 programs. - Magnetic core-rope memory, fixed-point arithmetic, and the AGC's unusual architecture. - The software interpreter and mathematical equations used for lunar landing guidance. - The DSKY interface astronauts used to communicate with the computer. - Real source-code routines with names like BURN, BABY, BURN. - The Executive, priority scheduling, and the famous 1201 and 1202 alarms. This film is also a tribute to Margaret Hamilton (1936–2026), who led the onboard flight-software effort at MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory, and to the remarkable engineers whose work helped make the Moon landing possible. More than half a century later, we can still read their code. *Explore the original sources:* Apollo 11 source code: chrislgarry/apollo-11 Virtual AGC project: ibiblio.org Created with Mathify — mathematical and scientific animations: mathify.dev CHAPTERS 0:00 The Computer Alarm That Threatened Apollo 11 1:46 Apollo 11's Original Source Code Is on GitHub 4:13 Margaret Hamilton: The People Behind the Code 5:27 Two Spacecraft, Two Guidance Computers 7:47 Apollo's Tiny Computer and Its Woven Memory 11:35 Fixed-Point Arithmetic and Negative Zero 14:04 How Apollo's Memory Banking Worked 15:42 How to Read Apollo 11's Assembly Code 20:00 NASA Built a Virtual Machine in 1969 21:51 The Mathematics of Landing on the Moon 26:17 The Descent: Flight Programs and Guidance Equations 30:39 How Astronauts Communicated With the Computer 33:05 BURN, BABY, BURN — The Humans Behind the Code 37:28 How Apollo's Operating System Worked 39:36 Why Apollo's Computer Reported 1201 and 1202 42:43 How the Software Recovered From Failure 44:40 Why Mission Control Said GO 46:04 Margaret Hamilton's Engineering Legacy 49:37 What Modern Engineers Can Learn From Apollo 53:29 Margaret Hamilton, 1936–2026 #Apollo11 #NASA #SoftwareEngineering #ComputerScience

TIL that the Apollo 11 Source Code is available on GitHub and even back then they were cracking jokes in the comments of their code

A cool thing I feel like I should remind people is that the code she wrote for the Apollo Guidance Computer has been open sourced and is available: chrislgarry/apollo-11

The Apollo 11 Code Is Open Source (and it's hilarious) The code that landed Apollo 11 on the Moon ran on less computing power than your thermostat, and the full source is free to download. I dug through the Apollo Guidance Computer's assembly, found Margaret Hamilton's name and some genuinely funny comments, then ran it in an emulator. If you write code for a living, this is worth a watch. 🔗 Relevant Links chrislgarry/apollo-11 ❤️ More about us Radically better observability stack: betterstack.com Written tutorials: betterstack.com Example projects: github.com/BetterStackHQ 📱 Socials Twitter: twitter.com Instagram: instagram.com TikTok: tiktok.com LinkedIn: linkedin.com 📌 Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:34 Margaret Hamilton and the Apollo software 1:27 The hardware: 3,840 bytes of RAM 1:54 Core rope memory 2:32 The funniest comments in the code 4:38 The Executive scheduler 5:14 Restart protection 5:41 The 1202 alarms on the way down 6:19 Running Apollo 11 in an emulator 6:56 The launch checklist 7:41 Outro

  10. chrislgarry/Apollo-11 : > Original Apollo 11 guidance computer (AGC) source code for Command Module (Comanche055) and Lunar Module (Luminary099). Digitized by the folks at Virtual AGC and MIT Museum. Other Moon things of note: - There are various open RL approaches for lunar-lander the computer game. GitHub topic lunar-lander: topics/lunar-lander - They probably should have landed that payload gently on the moon in order to not collapse any existing cave systems in order to develop competency to land the ISS on the moon. - There is a new orbital deceleration and landing approach for the moon; - "A rough guide for going back to the Moon" (2026) news.ycombinator.com : > *"Earth–Moon transfer via the L1 Lagrangian point using the theory of functional connections" (2026) link.springer.com
