Built a Three.js embryo explorer with continuous transitions from whole-body view to individual structures
built a free, open-source human embryo explorer using Three.js, with help from GPT-6 Astra.
It shows 16 developmental stages. One slider coordinates structure separation, layout, and camera movement from the assembled model to an overview of its parts, then close inspection.
One interaction bug: moving from an organ to the slider cleared its hover state, leaving inspection without a target. Retaining the target and adding a part selector fixed that transition.
On mobile, the overview becomes a scrollable two-column layout with larger controls. Touch handling separates page scrolling from model rotation, though physical-device testing is still limited.
Ash’s Human Atlas inspired the navigation; this explorer focuses on developmental stages. The geometry is illustrative and hasn’t been clinically validated.
20-second demo: x.com
MIT-licensed code: pratikgx/embryo-explorer
Inspiration: ashemag/human-atlas
I’m the creator; the explorer is free and requires no account. Would appreciate feedback on the camera transitions and how you’d handle selecting small structures on touchscreens.

5 Free Open-Source Study Tools for PDFs, Notes & Research
Trying to study from PDFs, scanned pages, or notes saved all over the place? This video looks at five free, open-source tools that can help you make practice questions, copy text from scans, read alongside translations, find saved research, and explore anatomy in 3D. I’ll show what each one is useful for, how to try it, and the important limits to check first.
We cover PickQ, OCR It, ImmerseFree, Capd, and Human Atlas. Generated questions, recognized text, and machine translations can be wrong, so check them against the original. Translation features send text to the provider you choose unless you use a local model; provider costs and limits may apply. Capd requires macOS 26 or later. Human Atlas is for education, not diagnosis or medical advice.
Free, open-source study and research tools:
- PickQ (make a practice bank from your own materials): Nauv357/pickq
- OCR It (extract text from paginated documents): thiagotigaz/ocr-it
- ImmerseFree (bilingual reading in a desktop browser): chang416/ImmerseFree
- Capd (capture and search saved research on Mac): jamiedavenport/capd
- Human Atlas (interactive 3D anatomy explorer): ashemag/human-atlas

Human Atlas: An interactive 3D anatomy explorer built with React, Three.js, and shadcn/ui (4.2k stars)
What it does
All text below is quoted directly from the project README.
>An interactive 3D anatomy explorer built with React, Three.js, and shadcn/ui. Take the BodyParts3D adult male reference apart into 2,234 individually selectable meshes, explore 15 anatomical systems, and search 3,432 named concepts.
Explore:
- Orbit, zoom, and select structures directly on the body.
- Toggle individual systems or use skeleton and organ presets.
- Move from assembled anatomy to a spaced inventory of every visible piece.
- Search anatomical names and source identifiers.
- Isolate a selected structure and read its details.
- Use compact controls and detail panels on mobile.
>Requires Node.js 22.13 or newer. No API keys or accounts are needed.
>This is an educational explorer, not a diagnostic or surgical tool.
