Download One File From GitHub Without Cloning (ghgrab) I've cloned an entire repo just to copy one file more times than I'd like to admit. So I tried ghgrab, a terminal tool that lets you browse a GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, Gitea or Forgejo repo and download only the files or folders you pick. No git clone, nothing to clean up. In this video I run it on my own project, pg-vector-assistant: paste the URL, preview server.js and package.json right in the terminal, select both, press D, and they land in my download folder. 📖 Full write-up (install options, private repos, release downloads, agent mode): medium.com 🔗 ghgrab on GitHub: abhixdd/ghgrab 📚 Docs: ghgrab.readthedocs.io ⏱ Chapters 0:00 Cloning a whole repo for one file 0:14 Meet ghgrab and open a repo 0:30 Browse and preview files 0:47 Download, and what else it does ⌨️ Keys used Space select a file P preview it in the terminal D download what you selected 🛠 Install npm install -g @ghgrab/ghgrab cargo install ghgrab pipx install ghgrab Repo browsing and downloads work on GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, Gitea and Forgejo. Release downloads, LFS and the built-in repo search are GitHub-only for now. #ghgrab #github #cli

You probably sighed, typed 'git clone', waited for the entire repo to download, then painstakingly navigated to the file, copied it, and finally deleted the whole cloned directory. It's a common developer chore, and frankly, it's inefficient. What if I told you there's a fantastic new tool that lets you 'grab anything you want' from GitHub, GitLab, and other popular Git forges, all without ever leaving your terminal or downloading more than you need? Enter ghgrab, a sleek and powerful command-line interface tool that's about to become your new best friend for repository exploration. Built with the speed and safety of Rust, leveraging the tokio and ratatui ecosystems, ghgrab provides a beautiful Terminal User Interface (TUI). This isn't just a basic text interface; it's a fully interactive experience that makes browsing repositories feel incredibly smooth and intuitive. You can navigate through folders, preview source code, and cherry-pick exactly the files or directories you need with ease. It's like having a miniature web browser for Git repositories right in your CLI, but hyper-focused on efficiency. The benefits of integrating ghgrab into your workflow are immediate and substantial. First and foremost, it eliminates the 'clone-and-delete' dance, saving you precious time and bandwidth. Need a file? Just ghgrab it! The clean TUI ensures that browsing is not only fast but also a pleasure to use. Installation is a breeze, whether you're a JavaScript aficionado (NPM), a Rustacean (Cargo), or a Pythonista (pipx), ghgrab has you covered. Beyond simple file grabbing, ghgrab is packed with features. You can quickly search and navigate through any repo's folders using fuzzy search, making it super easy to find what you're looking for. It even has built-in repository discovery, allowing you to search GitHub directly from the home screen. For those dealing with larger assets, ghgrab boasts support for GitHub LFS (Large File Storage), and you can even download multiple files and folders in batch mode. A particularly useful feature is its ability to download GitHub release artifacts, intelligently selecting the best match for your operating system and architecture. This project truly is a game-changer for anyone who frequently interacts with Git repositories from the command line. Imagine the time saved, the cleaner directories, and the sheer convenience. ghgrab is more than just a downloader; it's a productivity enhancer that respects your time and your terminal.
