Ink Phone: an open-source dialer and contacts app for e-ink phones (made on a Hisense A9) My daily driver is a Hisense A9 running Android 14 (AOSP), and the stock dialer never looked right on it. Text came out grey and antialiased, buttons had ripple animations, and smooth scrolling caused ghosting. So I made a phone app that is drawn for the e-ink panel instead. What's different on e-ink - Every pixel is pure black or white. Text is rendered without antialiasing, with stems snapped to whole pixels. Icons and emoji are two-tone. - No animations and no ripples. Lists advance page by page by default, so the panel redraws once per page instead of smearing through a scroll. Regular scrolling is just one setting away if you prefer it. - Call duration is shown in whole minutes, so the screen isn't redrawn every second during a call. - Optional full panel refresh on the A9 after a call and every N pages, via [A9PatchingService](damianmqr/A9PatchingService). What it does - Keypad with T9 search over names (English and Russian) and numbers, speed dial on 2–9, DTMF tones - Its own in-call screen when set as the default phone app: mute, speaker, Bluetooth, hold, call waiting, swap and merge, SIM selection - Recents grouped by number and day, with a missed-calls filter - Contacts as a paged list with a letter index and favorites. Create and edit contacts in Google or phone accounts; Android handles the sync. - vCard import and export for one contact, a whole account, a selection or everything, with duplicates matched by number and name - Settings for text size, font weight, button corners, colors and vibration No internet permission, no trackers, GPL-3.0. Requires Android 11+. Builds are reproducible. Install: grab the APK from [GitHub Releases](github.com/AndreyGladkov/ink-phone/releases), or add `AndreyGladkov/ink-phone` to [Obtainium](ImranR98/Obtainium) to get updates. Then make it the default phone app in Settings → Calls. I've only tested it on my A9. It should run on any Android 11+ phone, but the panel refresh is A9-only. If you have another e-ink phone, I'd like to hear how it looks on yours. A note on how it was made: I'm a web developer who recently started learning Android development, and some of the code was written with an AI coding assistant. Source: AndreyGladkov/ink-phone

PalmGlass: turn a Pixel into a trackpad + keyboard for Xreal glasses in Android desktop mode (open source, looking for testers) I've been building a small open-source app called **PalmGlass** and I'm looking for a few people to try it and tell me what breaks. **What it does** Android 16 QPR3+ on Pixel 8 and newer has a native desktop mode when you plug in a USB-C display. Xreal glasses count as one. What Android doesn't give you is a way to point and type without carrying a mouse and keyboard. PalmGlass turns the phone into that: - The phone screen goes black and becomes a trackpad. A cursor appears on the glasses. - Tap to click, two fingers to scroll, two-finger tap for long press, tap-then-drag to drag. - Three-finger swipe up opens an app launcher on the phone that opens apps straight onto the glasses. - A keyboard panel appears on the phone whenever a text field on the glasses takes focus. - Three-finger tap locks the touchpad (two buzzes) so the phone can go in a pocket during a movie. Tap again to unlock (one buzz). - Three-finger swipe down exits. No root. The accessibility service it uses can't read screen content; it only draws the cursor and injects touches on the external display. **Requirements** - Pixel 8 or newer on Android 16 QPR3 or later, with desktop mode. **This is for desktop mode, not screen mirroring.** If the glasses just mirror the phone, the app has nothing to drive. - Xreal glasses on the USB-C cable. Any DisplayPort Alt Mode display should behave the same. - Developed and tested only on GrapheneOS (currently Android 17). Stock Pixel firmware has the same display and desktop features, but I haven't tried it, which is part of why I'm posting. **Install** Install through Obtainium (ImranR98/Obtainium) using the repo URL as the source: sysgenerated/palmglass. The APK is built and signed by GitHub Actions from the public source. Then enable the accessibility service, enable the PalmGlass keyboard, and allow notifications from the setup screen. **Warnings, please read** - This is version 0.1.0 and has had exactly one tester: me. Expect rough edges. - It needs an accessibility service that can inject touches. Only install it if you're comfortable with that. The source is there to check. - The phone screen stays on (black, minimum brightness) for the whole session, because Android ends the desktop session when the phone sleeps. Battery drain is real, and the glasses draw power from the phone too. A hub with power-delivery passthrough helps for long sessions. - If the touchpad seems dead, it's probably locked. Three-finger tap unlocks it. If it's genuinely stuck, three-finger swipe down, hit Stop on the notification, or unplug the glasses. - There's no hover, since pointer actions are injected as touches. Drags lag a little behind the finger. - The Android taskbar on the glasses belongs to Android and occasionally misbehaves on its own. That part isn't mine. **Known bug I'm chasing** Sometimes after plugging in, the cursor can't reach the very bottom of the glasses display, where the taskbar / app menu lives. Unplugging and replugging the glasses fixes it. If you hit this, I'd love to know what glasses you have, whether it happened on the first plug-in after boot, and whether anything else was connected. **What I'd like from testers** - Phone model, ROM (stock or GrapheneOS), Android version, glasses model. - Whether the cursor appears and reaches all four edges. - Whether typing into a field on the glasses works. - Anything that crashed or got stuck, and what you did right before. Bug reports go to GitHub issues on the repo. Thanks in advance. MIT licensed, so fork away.
