Mural - an open-source language app you run on your own OpenAI key, built around talking to it, with all your learning data staying on the phone
The tagline is "the language app you eventually delete," which is a strange thing for an app to say about itself and also the most honest positioning I've seen in this category. The premise is that you learn by having conversations, and the goal is to get you talking well enough that you stop needing it.
The structural difference from the big commercial apps: there's no Mural subscription and no Mural server holding your data. You bring your own OpenAI API key, the app talks directly to OpenAI, and your learning records live on your device. You pay OpenAI for what you use and nobody else.
What's inside:
- Live voice conversation with an animated orb, gentle corrections, optional meaning subtitles you can lean on when stuck, word lookup mid-conversation, and a typed-reply fallback when speaking isn't convenient
- Eight language modules, each with its own themes and teaching guidance: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Norwegian Bokmal, international English and Mandarin, the last with optional pinyin
- 24 conversation themes plus the ability to request a current topic, where web search supplies source links
- Adaptive difficulty drawn from evidence in your actual replies, with recall bars that need spaced retrieval in different contexts to fill, and separate progress per language
- Local-first storage with JSON backup export and import, no cloud sync, no analytics SDK, no ads. The API key sits in the Keychain, is excluded from learning exports, and is only ever sent to OpenAI
- Native on both platforms: SwiftUI on iPhone, Jetpack Compose on Android, with iPhone-compatible backups between them
The honesty in the readme is unusual and worth calling out as a positive. It states plainly that the recall bars are product heuristics and not calibrated forgetting probabilities or a language certificate, and that pronunciation and teaching quality still need fluent-speaker review rather than claiming the model has it handled. Projects usually oversell exactly these points.
Now the real caveat, because this is not an App Store download. You install it by building it yourself: a Mac with Xcode 26, an iPhone on iOS 26.1, and your own Apple account for signing, or the equivalent Android build with Android SDK 36. A free Apple Personal Team works but the provisioning expires every seven days, so you re-run the build to refresh it. There's no public TestFlight yet, and the hosted "buy minutes" service is explicitly not active. This is for people comfortable building from source, or willing to point a coding agent at it, not for handing to a relative who wants to learn Spanish.
Also note it needs API access to the specific models named in the readme, and a ChatGPT subscription does not provide API credit, that's a separate thing people constantly conflate.
MIT licensed, 1,156 stars and 237 forks as of writing, verified via the GitHub API.
