Android 9 and PlayThing for Car Thing is now public! A few days ago, I shared a post about getting Apple CarPlay running on Spotify's Car Thing. I didn't expect that much interest, but a lot of you asked for the source code and instructions. Well, here they are! I've published two repositories: PlayThing - The CarPlay version. Runs a minimal Android 9 build with DiPlay integrated. Wired CarPlay, working touchscreen, knobs, buttons, Siri, Bluetooth audio, automatic brightness, and hardware-accelerated video decoding. superbird-android - The vanilla Android 9 Go build, without CarPlay. This is probably the more interesting one for anyone looking to develop other applications for the Car Thing. It's a stripped-down, 32-bit Android build optimized to run on just 512 MB of RAM, with the necessary hardware drivers and libraries. Both repos include source code, kernel patches, build instructions, documentation, and flashing tools. A quick note about Nocturne's Prelude project: I've seen some people mentioning it, so I wanted to clarify that these are two completely separate projects. From what I've seen, Prelude seems to offer a more stable and straightforward way to get CarPlay and Android Auto working on the Car Thing. If that's all you're after, it's probably the better option right now. My project is much more experimental. This started as a side project to see if we could actually get Android running on this hardware despite its limitations. CarPlay was really just the motivation to try it. I'm more interested in what else we might be able to do now that we have a working Android environment. A few things worth mentioning: The installation uses the unused B slot, keeping the original Spotify firmware intact. You can still boot into the original software by holding preset 1 when powering on. The flashing tool also backs up the device before making changes and supports restoring it. For CarPlay, you'll need a USB-C hub with power delivery to connect your iPhone. Audio goes to your car stereo over Bluetooth. Wireless CarPlay isn't supported yet. This is still a beta (v0.1.0). I've only tested it on my own Car Thing, and there are some known issues, particularly occasional USB disconnections and call audio latency. Please read the documentation before flashing anything. There's always a risk of bricking your device. Also, credit where it's due: DiPlay handles the actual CarPlay functionality. A lot of the groundwork for understanding this hardware came from the existing Car Thing community, including the nixos-superbird project and Spotify's hardware documentation. I'm hoping the vanilla Android build will be useful beyond CarPlay. There's a lot of potential in this little device, and I'd love to see what others can do with it. Solo instalé una app en la pantalla: DiPlay 0.2.19. shihabal3amri.github.io Tres cosas a tener en cuenta: necesitás Android 7.1 o más nuevo en la radio, NO entres al reproductor de música de la radio (hace que se pause solo), y cerrá todas las apps que queden abiertas atrás (si no, puede haber microcortes en el audio). La app la tienen en constante actualizacion asi que la version 0.2.19 puede no ser la ultima. CONTEXTO Tengo un VW Vento 2011 con una radio Android genérica AC8227L y la uso con Iphone 15 pro. La pantalla tiene un sistema operativo basico viejisimo y queria actualizarla a algo mas actual como CarPlay, para asi poder usar Spotify y Waze directamente desde ahi. Las unicas opciones que encontre eran USBs que compras y los conectas a la pantalla, pero antes de eso pense que en estos tiempos la verdad que tenia que haber alguna alternativa gratis, y mas siendo una pantalla Android, asi que empece a buscar. Con ayuda de la IA investigue pero no encontre absolutamente nada, hasta que un dia me aparece en recomendados de youtube este video: youtube.com Donde basicamente muestra una app llamada DiPlay, china obvio, creada originalmente para autos BYD, que te permite usar CarPlay en dispositivos android sin necesidad de hardware adicional, dongles USB o jailbreak, osea sin conectarle nada a la pantalla. Gracias a este video descargue la app y la instale en la pantalla usando un apk installer que ya venia instalado. La app es DiPlay 0.2.19 shihabal3amri/DiPlay La web tiene instrucciones en español y link directo de descarga shihabal3amri.github.io Un par de cosas que tuve que tener en cuenta: - La ultima version de la app hasta el momento la 0.2.19 entra desde Android 7.1 en adelante. - Resulta que la radio tiene su propio reproductor de música por Bluetooth, y si entrás ahí, la radio se queda con el audio del teléfono y CarPlay se queda sin nada para reproducir. Conectaba todo bien, le daba play a Spotify y al segundo se pausaba solo. Asi que deje que el teléfono se conecte por Bluetooth y fui directamente a la app, sin pasar por la parte de música. - Al escuchar en spotify tenia unos microcortes, hasta que cerre las apps en segundo plano, todas, solo deje abierto DiPlay y ahi empezo a funcionar bien sin cortes. Supongo que esto solo pasa en pantallas viejas. INSTRUCCIONES PASO A PASO, COMO LO HICE YO Desde la compu 1. Entrá a shihabal3amri.github.io o a github.com/shihabal3amri/DiPlay/releases y descargas el archivo que termina en .apk de la última versión (en mi caso DiPlay-0.2.19.apk, pesa unos 18 MB). 2. Copialo a un pendrive. En la radio 3. Conecta el pendrive en la radio. 4. Abri el administrador de archivos de la radio (o un apkinstaller si lo tiene, la mía venía con uno), busca el archivo en el pendrive y tocalo para instalarlo. Si te pide permiso para instalar apps de orígenes desconocidos, acepta. Si te da el error "se ha producido un error al analizar el paquete", es que tu Android es más viejo que el mínimo de la app. Fijate que estes bajando la última versión y no una vieja. 5. Cuando termine, abrí DiPlay y aceptale todos los permisos que te pida (Bluetooth, ubicación, micrófono, dispositivos cercanos). Son necesarios para que conecte. Emparejar el teléfono 6. En los ajustes de Bluetooth de la radio, emparejá el iPhone como lo harías normalmente. Acepta en el telefono. Importante: una vez emparejado, no entres al reproductor de música ni a la sección de Bluetooth de la radio. El Bluetooth tiene que quedar conectado, pero no hay que entrar ahí. Configurar la conexión 7. Activá el "compartir internet por WiFi" de la radio (en los ajustes de Android, la misma función que tiene cualquier cel). Anota el nombre y la contraseña exactos. No hace falta que la radio tenga internet. 8. En DiPlay, andá a Ajustes y después a Conexión. Elegí la opción del punto de acceso del coche y cargá el nombre y la contraseña que anotaste. Guardá. Para usarlo 9. Cerra todas las apps que queden abiertas en segundo plano y deja solo DiPlay. Si no, la música puede tener microcortes. 10. Dejá que el teléfono se conecte por Bluetooth, abrí DiPlay y dale a conectar. Al iPhone no hay que conectarlo a la red WiFi a mano, se conecta solo. 11. En el iPhone te va a aparecer un aviso para permitir CarPlay. Aceptalo. Esto es solo la primera vez. En unos segundos aparece CarPlay en la pantalla y listo. De ahí en adelante arranca solo.
