otwarchive

What does it do?

It is an open-source web application for hosting archives of fanworks, which are fan-made works such as fan fiction, fan art, and fan videos. [1] The README points to the Archive of Our Own (AO3), a multifandom archive (one covering many fan communities), as an example of the software in action. [2]

  1. leaving the repo here if anyone wants to check out and from personal experience working in IT, they are way more careful than a lot of companies out there when it comes to exposing their users to compromising code otwcode/otwarchive

Just a note: AO3 situation has nothing to do with the PHP vulnerability I saw in megathread and other threads that people thinking it was to do with the PHP2Shell vulnerability that shut down half the web for patching ealrier this month. Is probably not for several reasons: 1. otwarchive, the software that AO3 is running on, is written on Ruby on Rails. 2. OTW shut down the fanlore wiki out of precaution until the patch came out because MediaWiki does use php. They would've done the same to AO3.

Help with fanfiction.lol federation? I recommended the Fediverse to Brennan Kenneth Brown (the creator and developer of fanfiction.lol: fanfiction.lol, which is an alternative to Ao3, but that uses the same OTW software: otwcode/otwarchive). And he told me to go ahead and implement, as well as create a pull request. The issue is: I know almost NOTHING about the technical side of The Fediverse (lol). fanfiction.lol Codeberg: codeberg.org

Should Harry Potter potentially get its own OTW-style archive instead of living on AO3? This post will most likely get downvoted, but here's a random thought that I had: HP is massive. It's one of the biggest fandoms on AO3, and a huge chunk of the site's storage, traffic, and tagging load comes from it. And it will most likely get even more massive, when the series comes out in December. So, my thought was, what if someone potentially spun up an OTW-style archive that's just for Harry Potter*? ___ Perhaps name it something like: Common Room: a nod to the Hogwarts house hangouts where everyone gathers, and the plain-English phrase Pensieve: a place to store and revisit memories (stories) The Owlery: fits a site where works get "delivered" Room of Requirement: fits an archive that has whatever you need, but it's very recognizable The Leaky Archive: a pun on the Leaky Cauldron, which is a good gathering place Floo Fics: a Floo-network pun on "travel anywhere in the fandom" ___ I am not suggesting that HP fans be banned from ao3, but instead, have their own custom archive, that is backed by the OTW code: otwcode/otwarchive But something like this: Ad Astra :: Star Trek Fanfiction Sunset Archive fanfiction.lol Superlove Comics Fanfiction Authors Archive (CFAA) Ourchive But for HP. ___ Here's why it might be worth considering: It could take some load off AO3. HP is such a big slice of the site that moving even part of it could matter. HP fans would get their own space. Dedicated tags, challenges, and community events without getting buried in everything else. It'd be easy to avoid for people who want nothing to do with HP. A lot of folks are uncomfortable with the fandom because of JK Rowling. A separate site would let them skip it entirely. But there are obvious downsides too: Splitting the fandom could hurt discoverability, especially for crossovers. A new site means new moderation, hosting costs, and volunteer burnout. AO3 is the archive people trust. Would writers actually move their works? Would a separate, OTW backed HP site make the fandom feel more isolated, or more like a "ghetto"? ___ So what do you think? Would you use an OTW based HP-only archive, or stick with AO3? Is "separate it out" a good idea, or does it cause more problems than it solves? If it happened, what would make it actually work (import tools, OTW backing, a good name)? Any other fandoms that might benefit from the same approach? Curious to hear takes from both HP fans and people who've left the fandom.

  9. @shyronic No idea, I know it's not the PHP issue because AO3 is written mostly in Ruby: otwcode/otwarchive My understanding was also that development was stable and that it was actively maintained. So I'm not sure what the issue is, we'll probably have to wait for an explanation
