The Truth About OpenCut: Can It Really Replace CapCut? Looking for an open source CapCut alternative? We tested OpenCut, the free video editor that runs in your browser, by making the same short edit in OpenCut and in CapCut's free plan: three clips, a title, some music, a speed change and auto captions. OpenCut did all of it for free, with no account and no watermark. CapCut made our captions too, but wouldn't export them without Pro ($19.99 a month on CapCut's own page). We also checked whether OpenCut uploads your videos, what it can't do yet, which OpenCut you're actually getting, and two other free editors, Shotcut and DaVinci Resolve. Tested on 24 October 2026: OpenCut 0.3.0 (released 15 Apr 2026), the classic editor at opencut.app, in a fresh Chrome profile on a Mac; CapCut desktop 9.6 on its free plan, which we used without signing in (its Join Pro button asks you to sign in), and Shotcut 26.9, both in a Windows virtual machine. DaVinci Resolve is described from its own website. Every clip and the music in our test edit are our own. What you need: a web browser (we used Chrome). No account. Your projects are saved in your browser, so export anything you want to keep. To remove everything it stored, clear opencut.app's site data in your browser's settings. Projects live only in your browser: there's no project file to save, and clearing your browser's data deletes them. OpenCut by Maze (mazeincoding) and contributors, MIT licence. CapCut, Shotcut and DaVinci Resolve shown as the products we tested or compared. Prices from the makers' own pages on 24 Oct 2026: CapCut Pro $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year (CapCut's Standard vs Pro page, 23 Sep 2026), DaVinci Resolve Studio $236 (Blackmagic's US page). #opensource #capcut #videoediting #opencut
