New Mods, Rules Update, and RFC Hey guys, We've had a lot of developments in the community lately, especially in the past month. We've been internally discussing how we can best position the subreddit to promote development while also protecting the sub from malware and bait. We have three particular things to share with you. 0. New Mods! With the existing moderators becoming busier lately, it has been hard keeping up with the renewed activity in the subreddit. We greatly appreciate the effort put in by the community to try things previously thought impossible, and to keep up with the increased posts, we have two new moderators - u/SkinnyHedgehog and u/yuichiro__ - Say hi! 1. AI-generated projects There have been divided opinions on the topic of tools and drivers written almost or completely using AI. While it has accelerated development, there are some things we feel the community will benefit from being aware of. As a case study for (almost-completely) AI-generated code, we have the new Nvidia driver from NullMoth. It has gathered a lot of (very warranted) attention. Writing code that runs close to the hardware requires that you hold yourself to a high standard when designing the architecture and writing code. The tool released by NullMoth is a combination of several things packaged as one. It is a graphics driver, it is an Apple logo modifier (to a custom moth-themed Apple logo), an EFI creator, and a log aggregator and crash reporter (the last few things as part of the 1401 companion app). Apart from the subjective opinions surrounding the developer of an open community advertising themselves through invasive system modifications (which no established tool has done before), it presents innumerable attack surfaces and unchecked vulnerabilities. Link to Vulnerability Report If you have this driver loaded on your computer, an attacker could very easily gain access to your entire computer, including all your files, your apps, and browser history. Some of the reported vulnerabilities are things that no sane developer would write, provided they had decent systems and programming knowledge. While they are now patched, there is no guarantee that this driver is free from any more exploits. An unfortunate reality surrounding vibe-coded software is that the Dunning-Kruger Effect is more prevalent among the developer community than ever, and what may look like good code to the untrained eye may in fact not be so. To give end users an idea of the potential risks associated with AI-assisted development, we have decided to implement the following changes. 1. All posts that introduce or exhibit new software must include the DEV flair and must include source code in the post. 2. They must also disclose the extent of AI use. Whether it was completely AI-written, used for minimal autofill-esque tasks, or not used at all. To keep yourself safe from potentially unsafe code and malware, we recommend that people with the relevant knowledge audit the source code, report suspicious software to us, and leave a comment letting others know. 2. iOS ports and other non-macOS in this subreddit Back when hackintoshing first started, the only Apple software that could be run on other devices was Mac OS X. It has remained this way until a few weeks ago. Recently, there have been developments surrounding iOS being ported to non-Apple mobile phones as well. We have gotten reports on almost all such posts, as them not belonging to this subreddit. We'd like to put this to a vote. Would you rather have the description of a hackintosh as "Apple software running on non-Apple hardware", or keep r/hackintosh exclusive to only macOS? We look forward to your comments.

NullMoth 2.0: NVIDIA driver for macOS 15 and 26, with every fix from the security report 2.0 of the NullMoth NVIDIA driver and 1401 (the Windows tool that builds the installer) is out. It runs on macOS 15 Sequoia and macOS 26 Tahoe, and 1401 now lets you pick which one before it builds. **Security first.** Mahasvan (@Mahasvan on GitHub) went through the kernel driver and reported what he found to us before posting it publicly (issue #214 on GitHub). He was right about all of it. The worst one let any app read or write kernel memory through the display code; others let a normal user re-initialise the GPU or reach memory owned by another process. All eight findings are fixed in 2.0. The fixes have tests that fail against the old code, and we checked them on a running machine (macOS 15 and 26) from a normal, non-root account. What else changed - the black screen with only a cursor some people got after 1.15 - flicker caused by an old frame being shown again - second monitors keep their high refresh rates, and panels over 240 Hz are paced properly - ultrawide, 4K and HiDPI modes are no longer capped at twice the boot resolution - cards with a small BAR stop running out of video memory on the desktop - crashes in Photos, Chess, Discord and Vulkan apps - RTX 50 cards run compute kernels compiled by NVIDIA's own compiler - displays plugged in after boot come up without a restart, and macOS gets your panel's real size (no more 72 dpi guess) - on the 1401 side: hybrid Intel CPUs that stopped at EXITBS, warnings for NVMe drives macOS can't install to, and a lot of download and USB stick errors that now either retry or tell you what to change The AMD RX 9070 display driver and the MediaTek Wi-Fi driver are now opt-in and off by default, since neither is proven on enough hardware yet. 1401 has a checkbox if you want to try them. Twelve people sent fixes that are in this release. IT WORKS! I’ve wanted to run macOS on my PC for a while, but my NVIDIA GPU always held me back. I heard about the new NullMoth project and gave it a shot. Finally Booted My PC is a intel i7-6700K, R T X 3060 12GB, 32GB of DDR4. Weird bug that i got tho is that all my dark and normal blues are purple i have no clue why i havent seen anyone else talk about it so it seems like it is just me that is having this strange bug.
