  1. Paste the Broken UI Into Claude Code, Then Make Playwright Prove the Fix - Book: Ship It — the pragmatic startup tech stack - Also by me: Thinking in Go (2-book series) — Complete Guide to Go Programming + Hexagonal Architecture in Go - My project: Hermes IDE | GitHub — an IDE for developers who ship with Claude Code and other AI coding tools - Me: xgabriel.com | GitHub --- "The Apply button looks off next to the promo code field." You type that, the agent changes a margin, and the button is still off, now in a slightly different way. The sentence was true, but the agent can't tell which edge you meant, or whether "off" means the height or the position. Claude Code accepts images. You can drag one into the window, paste it with Ctrl+V (Alt+V on Windows and WSL), or give it a file path. A screenshot carries all of that information at once. An agent can also report "fixed" before anything has been checked, so this tutorial adds a second half: Playwright takes the screenshot after the fix, and a test decides whether the fix holds. The bug: a button that floats next to its input A promo code row: one input and one button in a flex container. Copy these two files into an empty folder. <!-- index.html --> <!doctype html> <link rel="stylesheet" href="styles.css"> <form class="promo"> <input id="code" placeholder="Promo code"> <button type="submit">Apply</button> </form> /* styles.css */ .promo { display: flex; align-items: baseline; gap: 8px; } .promo input { font-size: 16px; padding: 10px 12px; } .promo button { font-size: 14px; padding: 6px 16px; } align-items: baseline lines up the text baselines of the two items (MDN). The input has a larger font and more padding, so the button ends up as a shorter box. Its text sits on the input's text line, and its top and bottom edges match nothing. It looks like the button is floating. You can see that at a glance, and it's awkward to put into words, which is the case where an image beats a description. Serve the folder with Python's built-in http.server: python3 -m http.server 3000 Step 1: capture the broken state with Playwright You could take the screenshot with your OS tool, and that works. Taking it with Playwright is better, because you'll take the "after" shot the same way: same browser, same viewport, same wait. Then the two images differ only where the CSS changed. Set up Playwright once with the official installer, which also offers to install the browsers: npm init playwright@latest The installer also writes a sample tests/example.spec.ts that visits playwright.dev. Delete it; you only need your own spec. The generated playwright.config.ts gets replaced by the one in step 2. Then capture the page. screenshot is a Playwright CLI command that takes a URL and an output file. It accepts --viewport-size, --wait-for-selector and --full-page, and it uses Chromium by default (CLI source): npx playwright screenshot \ --viewport-size "800, 400" \ --wait-for-selector ".promo button" \ http://localhost:3000 before.png --wait-for-selector holds the capture until the button exists. Without it, a slow page gives you a blank image of a page that hasn't loaded yet. !A magnifying glass over a text field and a smaller button that sits out of line with it Some bugs take one glance to see and a paragraph to describe. Step 2: write a test that fails on the bug Write the tests before the agent touches anything, so the agent has something to run and you know the tests fail for the right reason. locator.boundingBox() returns x, y, width and height in pixels, or null when the element isn't visible. // playwright.config.ts import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test'; export default defineConfig({ testDir: './tests', use: { baseURL: 'http://localhost:3000' }, webServer: { command: 'python3 -m http.server 3000', url: 'http://localhost:3000', reuseExistingServer: !process.env.CI, }, }); The webServer block starts the server before the tests and reuses one that's already running when you're not in CI (web server docs). // tests/promo.spec.ts import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test'; test('Apply lines up with the input', async ({ page }) => { await page.goto('/'); const input = await page.locator('#code').boundingBox(); const btn = await page .locator('.promo button') .boundingBox(); expect(input).not.toBeNull(); expect(btn).not.toBeNull(); expect(btn!.y).toBeCloseTo(input!.y, 0); expect(btn!.height).toBeCloseTo(input!.height, 0); }); test('promo row looks right', async ({ page }) => { await page.goto('/'); await expect(page.locator('.promo')) .toHaveScreenshot('promo-row.png'); }); The first test is the red-to-green proof. With baseline, the button's top and height differ from the input's and the test fails. After the fix they match to within half a pixel (toBeCloseTo with 0 digits), and it passes. It compares the two boxes to each other, not to a stored image, so it means the same thing on every machine. The second test is the visual comparison. On its first run there's no baseline yet, so the test fails, reports the missing snapshot and saves the current capture as the baseline. After that, any run that differs fails. Pixels may differ by a color threshold that defaults to 0.2, and maxDiffPixels is unset unless you configure it. Run the suite once now, against the broken CSS. To make the baseline step explicit, use: npx playwright test --update-snapshots The geometry test fails, which is what you want. The stored baseline is now the broken row, and that is deliberate: when the agent changes the CSS, the screenshot test will show you exactly which pixels moved. Step 3: paste the image, and tell the agent what you expect The image shows what looks wrong. It doesn't say what "right" is, how to reproduce the bug, or how the agent should prove the fix. Put those in the prompt with the image. In Claude Code, paste before.png with Ctrl+V or drag it in, and Claude Code labels it [Image #1]. You can also name the file and Claude will read it from disk: [Image #1] is before.png: the promo row at http://localhost:3000, 800x400, Chromium. Bug: the Apply button is shorter than the input and sits off its edges. Expected: button and input share the same top edge and the same height. Constraints: change styles.css only. Keep the 8px gap. When done: 1. Re-run the same npx playwright screenshot command to after.png and look at it next to before.png. 2. Run npx playwright test and show me the output. The last two lines matter most. They change "I fixed it" from a claim into a check the agent has to run. The image path works on the way back too: the agent can open after.png itself and compare it with what you pasted. The fix you're hoping for is one line. With align-items: stretch (or by deleting the line, since normal behaves as stretch for flex items), an item whose height is auto stretches to fill the row (MDN). The button grows to the input's height: .promo { display: flex; align-items: stretch; gap: 8px; } If the agent comes back with a margin-top: 3px on the button instead, that's a fix tuned to one font at one size. The constraints line and the geometry test are how you catch it. !A before-and-after pair of a button and a field, with only the button's outline highlighted between them A good fix leaves a diff that covers the button and nothing else. Step 4: let the pixel diff show what the fix touched After the agent's change, the geometry test should pass and the visual test should fail, because the row changed. Open the report: npx playwright show-report Or run npx playwright test --ui. In UI mode you can compare the expected image, the actual image and the diff, and drag a slider across the two. Read the diff like a code review. If the changed pixels are only the button growing to the input's height, the fix did one thing. If the input moved or the gap changed, the agent touched more than you asked, and you send it back with that diff. Once the diff looks right and the geometry test passes, accept the new state as the baseline and commit the image: npx playwright test --update-snapshots From now on the test guards the fix. The next time an agent, or a person, touches styles.css, the row is checked pixel by pixel. One caveat to plan for before this runs in CI: rendering varies with the OS, browser version, settings and hardware, so baseline names carry the platform (and the project name, if you define projects), like promo-row-darwin.png. A baseline made on your Mac will fail on a Linux runner. Generate baselines in the same environment CI uses. The geometry test doesn't have this problem, which is one more reason to keep both. Doing the paste step in Hermes If you run Claude Code inside Hermes IDE, there's a second way to do the paste. I build Hermes, so weigh this with that in mind. By default every agent in Hermes runs in its own real terminal with its own interface, so everything above works unchanged there. Per session, you can also tick Agent view for Claude. Hermes then renders the conversation itself, with thinking blocks, tool-call cards and diff previews, instead of Claude's terminal interface. You can paste images straight into its composer, and Claude sees the actual pixels (README). The terminal stays the default. Agent view runs on the Claude Agent SDK in a small per-session bridge, and it only exists for Claude. Codex and the other agents keep their own terminal interfaces. For this tutorial, that means step 3 is: screenshot to clipboard, paste into the composer, type the expectations and the two verification lines, send. When the agent edits styles.css, the diff preview shows the CSS change inline, and you can check it against the pixel diff from step 4. Since 2.2.9, Hermes also deletes pasted screenshots older than a week (release notes), so captures of a staging page don't pile up on your disk. Hermes is source-available (BSL 1.1) and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. Download it or read the source on GitHub. --- If this was useful A visual test that only passes on your laptop isn't done. It's done when CI runs it on every pull request, on the same OS the baselines were made on. Ship It covers that stretch for a small team: hosting, deploys, CI/CD, auth, payments and monitoring, everything between localhost and production. It's the book I'd give someone whose test suite is green locally and nowhere else. ![Ship It — the pragmatic startup tech stack](amazon.com)

  2. How to attach a Playwright auth header without sending it to another origin Summary An authentication header added in Playwright reached another origin both with extraHTTPHeaders and with a method that checks the destination in context.route and then adds the header with route.continue. The header is the Cloudflare Access service token sent by the script that opens this site's staging. A service token is a credential that Access accepts in place of a person's login. The header added with route.continue was attached to the target of a redirect to another origin. With a function that adds the header only after confirming that the redirect targets are also the staging origin, the header did not reach another origin. In the reproduction test on 2026-10-13, the result was the same in Chromium 145, WebKit 26.0, and Firefox 146. However, the navigation request that fetches the page's HTML reached the same server twice. The three browsers were the ones provided by Playwright version 1.58.2. Neither the browsers for Playwright 1.61.1, which the lockfile specifies, nor the regular releases of Safari and Firefox were tested. What you can take away This article is for people who write scripts that check staging with an authentication header attached in Playwright. - It shows a TypeScript function that adds the header only after confirming that the redirect targets are also the staging origin. - For each way of attaching the header, it compares the headers that reached another origin in a table covering four browser versions, including WebKit 26.5. - It describes the extraHTTPHeaders leak and the redirect problem found in review. - It shows that, under the destination's CORS settings, browsers differed in whether a request carrying the header arrived. The article is based on three sources: the records of the fixes to the script that checks this site's staging, the results of the reproduction test run on 2026-10-13 along with external materials checked on the same day, and the results of running the code in this article on 2026-10-28. Attaching the auth header only to the staging origin To send an authentication header in Playwright only to the staging origin, add the header after checking the origins of the redirect targets as well. Both a setting that adds the header regardless of destination and a method that judges only the destination before sending let the header reach another origin. On this site's staging, Cloudflare Access accepts a service token in place of a person's login. The script that opens staging puts this token in two headers, Client ID and Client Secret, and sends them. The 2026-10-13 reproduction test used a function that adds the header after checking the redirect targets. Two local servers with different origins were started, and a page on one was made to send requests to the other. In each of Chromium 145, WebKit 26.0, and Firefox 146, the header did not reach the other server. A page that redirects to the other server could not be opened, because this function stops the request. How addAuthHeaders works addAuthHeaders is a function that checks the redirect targets and adds the header only when all of them are the staging origin. In exchange, it sends the navigation request that fetches the page's HTML twice, once to check and once to send. In the 2026-10-13 reproduction test, with a function that does the same processing, this request reached the same server twice in each of the three browser types. Cases in which the server's response differs between the first and second requests were not tested. If the destination is not the staging origin, addAuthHeaders calls route.continue, which sends the request on, without the header. For a GET or HEAD navigation request to staging, it calls route.fetch, which sends the request first and receives the response, with maxRedirects set to 0. According to the description of maxRedirects, when it is 0, route.fetch does not follow redirects. addAuthHeaders follows the destinations given by the Location header of each response, one at a time, within staging. If every destination it followed is staging, it adds the header with route.continue and sends the request. If another origin appears, or the redirects exceed five, it stops the request with route.abort. For requests that are not navigations to staging, and for navigation requests other than GET and HEAD, it calls route.fetch only once, with the header added. It sets maxRedirects to 0 and returns the response to the browser. If the response is a redirect, it stops the request with route.abort. The following addAuthHeaders is code written out for this article from the function tested in the 2026-10-13 reproduction test. When this code was run on Chromium 145 on 2026-10-28, the header did not reach the server on the other origin. The results of running it on the other browsers have not been checked. import type { Route, Request } from "playwright"; // Read the staging URL and the header names and values from environment variables (the names are placeholders) const STAGING_ORIGIN = new URL(process.env.STAGING_URL ?? "").origin; const AUTH_HEADERS: Record<string, string> = { [process.env.AUTH_ID_HEADER_NAME ?? ""]: process.env.AUTH_CLIENT_ID ?? "", [process.env.AUTH_SECRET_HEADER_NAME ?? ""]: process.env.AUTH_CLIENT_SECRET ?? "", }; const MAX_REDIRECTS = 5; const isStaging = (url: string) => new URL(url).origin === STAGING_ORIGIN; const isRedirect = (status: number) => status >= 300 && status < 400; export async function addAuthHeaders(route: Route, request: Request) { // If the destination is not the staging origin, send the request without the headers if (!isStaging(request.url())) return route.continue(); const headers = { ...request.headers(), ...AUTH_HEADERS }; const method = request.method(); if (request.isNavigationRequest() && (method === "GET" || method === "HEAD")) { // Send without following redirects, and check each Location target one by one let url = request.url(); for (let redirects = 0; ; redirects++) { const response = await route.fetch({ url, headers, maxRedirects: 0 }); const location = response.headers()["location"]; if (!isRedirect(response.status()) || !location) break; url = new URL(location, url).href; if (!isStaging(url) || redirects >= MAX_REDIRECTS) return route.abort(); } // Every target followed is the staging origin, so send the request with the headers added return route.continue({ headers }); } // Send any other request only once, and return the response to the browser const response = await route.fetch({ headers, maxRedirects: 0 }); if (isRedirect(response.status())) return route.abort(); return route.fulfill({ response }); } // Usage: await context.route("**/*", addAuthHeaders); Headers that reached another origin, by way of attaching them With extraHTTPHeaders, which adds the header to every request, the header was attached both to fetches that the page sent to another origin and to redirect targets. A method that judges the destination in context.route, which receives requests before they are sent, and adds the header with route.continue, which sends them on, was also tried. With this method, the header was not attached to the page's fetch but was attached to the redirect target. Three browser types in four versions were tried, and the results were the same in all of them. In the 2026-10-13 reproduction test, two local servers with different origins were started. A page on one was made to send a fetch to the other. On the first server, a path that redirects to the other with a 302 was also set up. The other server allowed, in its CORS response, the names of the headers that the script added. The browsers used were Chromium 145.0.7632.6, WebKit 26.0, and Firefox 146.0.1, provided by Playwright version 1.58.2. For WebKit, 26.5, built for Playwright 1.62.0, was also used. The browsers for Playwright 1.61.1, which this site's lockfile specifies, were not available locally and are not in the table. The results at the other server are shown in the following table. | Way of attaching the header | Request to the other server | Chromium 145 | WebKit 26.0 | WebKit 26.5 | Firefox 146 | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | extraHTTPHeaders | Page's fetch | Attached | Attached | Attached | Attached | | extraHTTPHeaders | Redirect target | Attached | Attached | Attached | Attached | | Judge the destination in context.route and use route.continue | Page's fetch | Not attached | Not attached | Not attached | Not attached | | Judge the destination in context.route and use route.continue | Redirect target | Attached | Attached | Attached | Attached | The extraHTTPHeaders leak and the redirect problem found in review The overflow check script, which counts horizontal overflow, at first put the service token used for Access authentication in extraHTTPHeaders. As a result, the token was also attached to requests to the Supabase API. However, the destination was this site's backend, and the connection used HTTPS. To attach the header only to the destination origin, the AI agent doing the work removed extraHTTPHeaders from this script. Instead, it judged the destination in context.route, which receives requests before they are sent. Only when the destination was staging did it add the header with route.continue, which sends the request on. On the same day as the fix that narrowed the header to the destination origin, the AI agent that reviewed the fix found a path through which the header passes to redirect targets. A header added with route.continue is also attached to the request to the redirect target. For that request, the context.route function is not called. The reviewing AI agent had in mind the redirect that Access makes when the token is invalid, and the forwarding from the purchase entry point to the payment service. The description of route.continue says that the headers option also applies to redirects. The note on page.route says that if the response is a redirect, the function passed to route is called only for the first URL. On the other hand, the description of route.fetch, which sends the request first, gives the opposite guidance: to attach headers only to the original request, use route.continue. The approach of avoiding the leak to redirect targets with route.fetch and maxRedirects set to 0 was shown by a Playwright developer in issue 32939. The destination's CORS settings and differences between browsers Some browsers delivered a request carrying the header even though the server on the other origin did not allow the header name through CORS. The request arrived in three of the four versions tested. The destination's CORS settings cannot be relied on as a means of preventing the header from being sent to another origin. The 2026-10-13 reproduction test used extraHTTPHeaders, which adds the header to every request. According to MDN's explanation of CORS, when a header that is not on the CORS safelist is attached, the browser first asks for permission with a preflight request. It sends the actual request after receiving permission. Chromium 145 in the reproduction test sent only the preflight request, which does not contain the header values, and did not send the actual request. In WebKit 26.0 and 26.5 and in Firefox 146, no preflight request arrived, and the actual request carrying the header arrived. Every browser was a version provided by Playwright, and the regular releases of Safari and Firefox were not tested. 5. Select one cell per row with Playwright’s new shortcut Originally published at anton.qa. Playwright 1.64 adds within(), a shortcut for selecting inside each chosen row. A locator (finds page elements) describes which cells or rows to use. Here, the task is checking one item name from every stock row. Use nth(2) to choose the third matching cell. Counting starts at zero. With within(rows), Playwright makes that choice separately inside each row. That helps when your check should include every displayed row. A table-wide nth(2) checks just one cell. Run the complete example The public example contains the table, tests, and setup instructions. All data is synthetic, meaning made-up sample data. The tests load local HTML, the page's structure, without application network requests. Use Node.js 24, which runs JavaScript locally, and npm, which installs project packages. The project pins Playwright to 1.64.1. git clone https://github.com/antongulin/anton-qa-resources.git cd anton-qa-resources/posts/playwright-within-table-cells npm ci npx playwright install chromium npm run verify On Linux, missing browser system packages may require this installation command: npx playwright install --with-deps chromium Installation creates a local package folder and downloads the Chromium browser. The runner may also create local test-result files. Start with three rows The third cell contains the item name: | SKU | Bin | Item | |---|---|---| | T-101 | North | Apricot | | T-202 | West | Blueberry | | T-303 | East | Coconut | SKU means product code. Bin names the stock location. This is the complete table.html fixture, the example's page: <!doctype html> <html lang="en"> <meta charset="utf-8"> <title>Synthetic stock table</title> <table> <caption>Synthetic stock</caption> <thead> <tr><th>SKU</th><th>Bin</th><th>Item</th></tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr><td>T-101</td><td>North</td><td>Apricot</td></tr> <tr><td>T-202</td><td>West</td><td>Blueberry</td></tr> <tr><td>T-303</td><td>East</td><td>Coconut</td></tr> </tbody> </table> </html> Make the choice inside each row The table's body is tbody. Selecting its rows leaves out the header row. getByRole('cell') finds ordinary table cells. This is the first complete test from tests/table.spec.js: import { readFileSync } from 'node:fs'; import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test'; test('P1: select the third cell within each row, compared with global nth', async ({ page }) => { await page.setContent(readFileSync(new URL('../table.html', import.meta.url), 'utf8')); const rows = page.locator('tbody').getByRole('row'); const cells = page.getByRole('cell'); const thirdInEachRow = cells.nth(2).within(rows); const thirdInTable = cells.nth(2); await expect(rows).toHaveCount(3); await expect(thirdInEachRow).toHaveCount(3); await expect(thirdInEachRow).toHaveText(['Apricot', 'Blueberry', 'Coconut']); await expect(thirdInTable).toHaveCount(1); await expect(thirdInTable).toHaveText('Apricot'); console.log(`within each row: ${JSON.stringify(await thirdInEachRow.allTextContents())}`); console.log(`global nth(2): ${JSON.stringify(await thirdInTable.allTextContents())}`); }); cells.nth(2).within(rows) selects Apricot, Blueberry, and Coconut. The test checks both the number of selected cells and their text. It compares the same table with cells.nth(2), which selects only Apricot. Both choices work. They answer different questions about the page. Use the per-row choice when every row belongs in your check. Read the actual result The verified run used Node.js 24.21.0, Playwright 1.64.1, and Chromium. Both tests passed, with these printed values: within each row: ["Apricot","Blueberry","Coconut"] global nth(2): ["Apricot"] varied rows: ["Coconut","Apricot","Coconut"] The second test changes row order and repeats an item name. Its rows contain five, three, and four ordinary cells. The result still follows each row's third cell, in document order. The full test file includes that second case. Keep the limits in view These checks cover Chromium and rows with at least three ordinary cells. Merged cells need a separate check. This example does not measure speed. The number 2 still depends on the cell's position. If the table changes, review whether the third cell still means the same thing. Earlier Playwright versions could select columns through other patterns. within() makes this per-row choice explicit. It does not always mean less code. Try the complete example with your table's structure. The official documentation explains the selection rule. The 1.64 release notes introduce the shortcut. _I'm Anton. JavaScript number precision for large IDs, and ten new features for agent code !Ten new JavaScript features that shorten agent code, in two columns. Ships now: big IDs in tool results, where JSON.parse rounds 9007199254740993 to 9007199254740992 with no error and the source text keeps it exact; images for a model API; state per agent run; missing permissions; model text inside a regex. On the way: browser closes on a throw, dates across time zones, parallel tool calls, prompts as files and one trace per agent run. A long numeric ID can come out of JSON.parse as a different number, and nothing throws. const text = '{"id":1234567890123456789}' const { id } = JSON.parse(text) BigInt(id) // 1234567890123456768n JSON.stringify({ id }) // '{"id":1234567890123456800}' JavaScript numbers are 64-bit floats. Every whole number up to 9,007,199,254,740,991 (Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER) is exact. Above that, only some whole numbers fit, and among 19-digit numbers they're 128 to 2,048 apart. JSON.parse rounds the ID to the nearest one that fits (MDN, ECMA-262). So the ID changes twice. Parsing rounds it, which BigInt(id) shows: the original digits are gone, and no conversion brings them back. Then JSON.stringify writes the fewest digits that identify the float and fills the rest with zeros (ECMA-262). Even an ID that fits exactly can change that second way. Whatever reads the text next, the model or another API, gets a different ID. Which APIs send long IDs LinkedIn, X and Discord IDs can run to 19 digits. X and Discord send them as strings (X, Discord). Discord’s docs say why: its IDs are up to 64 bits, which would overflow as numbers in some languages. At 64 bits, an ID can even reach 20 digits. LinkedIn’s API uses strings as well, both for plain IDs and for URNs like urn:li:share:1234 (LinkedIn). In March, a bug report against Claude Code (#37707) said its official Discord plugin turned channel IDs into numbers, and fetching messages failed. It was closed for inactivity on 20 April, so it neither confirms the cause nor shows a fix. So keep IDs as strings end to end: in your types, your schemas and the text you hand the model. The same goes for any integration that passes records between two systems, not only agent tools. When an API sends numbers anyway JavaScript now has a fix. A JSON.parse reviver gets a third argument with each number’s original source text: const text = '{"id":1234567890123456789}' const data = JSON.parse(text, (key, value, { source }) => key === 'id' && typeof value === 'number' ? source : value ) data.id // '1234567890123456789' Three limits (MDN): - It needs the raw response text. If an SDK has already parsed the response, a large ID may already be rounded, and BigInt() on that number returns the rounded value, not the ID. - Match the ID fields your schema names, not every number, and check the string against your ID format. JSON numbers can also be fractions or exponents like 1e21. - It needs Chrome 114, Firefox 135, Safari 18.4 or Node 21 and later (compat data). On older runtimes the third argument is missing, and this callback throws. This source-text reviver is the first of ten new features that shorten agent code. Five are in the language now, two are finished and expected in ES2027, and three are still proposals. Versions below are the first releases that support each feature, from MDN’s compatibility data. Ships now: ES2025 and ES2026 1. Numeric IDs from other APIs JSON.parse source text · ES2026 · Chrome 114, Firefox 135, Safari 18.4, Node 21 (compat data). Before: JSON.parse(text), with the problem above. After: the reviver above. 2. Images for a model API Uint8Array.prototype.toBase64() · ES2026 · Chrome 140, Firefox 133, Safari 18.2, Node 25 (compat data). Before, which can hit the engine’s argument limit on large images: // bytes: Uint8Array const base64 = btoa(String.fromCharCode(...bytes)) After: const base64 = bytes.toBase64() 3. State per agent run Map.prototype.getOrInsert() · ES2026 · Chrome 145, Firefox 144, Safari 26.2, Node 26 (compat data). Before: // runs: Map<string, string[]> if (!runs.has(id)) runs.set(id, []) runs.get(id).push(step) After: runs.getOrInsert(id, []).push(step) 4. Missing permissions Set.prototype.difference() · ES2025 · Chrome 122, Firefox 127, Safari 17, Node 22 (compat data). Before: // needed, granted: Set<string> const missing = new Set([...needed].filter((s) => !granted.has(s))) After: const missing = needed.difference(granted) It finds what’s missing. Granting it is still your code’s decision. 5. Model text inside a regex RegExp.escape() · ES2025 · Chrome 136, Firefox 134, Safari 18.2, Node 24 (compat data). Before: a copied escape pattern, or none. const text = '$4.99+tax?' // from the model new RegExp(text).test('Total: $4.99+tax?') // false After: new RegExp(RegExp.escape(text)).test('Total: $4.99+tax?') // true Finished, expected in ES2027 Both are finished proposals at Stage 4, due in the 2027 edition (TC39). Stable Safari doesn’t have them yet, only Safari Technology Preview. 6. Closing the browser when a tool call throws await using · Chrome 134, Firefox 141, Node 24 (compat data). Before: const browser = await chromium.launch() try { await runTool(browser) } finally { await browser.close() } After: await using browser = await chromium.launch() await runTool(browser) Why: miss the finally, and a failed browser task can leave Chromium running on your server. Playwright’s browser closes itself when the scope exits, even on a throw (Playwright). 7. Dates across time zones Temporal.ZonedDateTime.prototype.add() · Chrome 144, Firefox 139, Node 26 (compat data). Before: // t: epoch milliseconds for 15:00 on 21 October 2026 in Berlin const due = new Date(t + 7 * 864e5) // 14:00 on 28 October in Berlin After: const start = Temporal.ZonedDateTime.from('2026-10-21T15:00[Europe/Berlin]') const due = start.add({ days: 7 }) // 2026-10-28T15:00:00+01:00[Europe/Berlin] Seven days of milliseconds is 168 hours, and Berlin’s clocks go back on 25 October, so 3pm becomes 2pm. Temporal adds calendar days and keeps 3pm (tz database). Still proposals These can still change. Some browsers already ship two of them. 8. Parallel tool calls Promise.allKeyed · Stage 3 · Firefox 155; not yet in Chrome, Safari or Node (compat data). Before, with results matched by position: const [user, orders] = await Promise.all([getUser(id), getOrders(id)]) After, with results by name: const { user, orders } = await Promise.allKeyed({ user: getUser(id), orders: getOrders(id) }) Why: add a tool call to Promise.all, miss the destructuring, and results land in the wrong variables. How parallel calls to one API share a connection is a separate question, covered in which web standard fits which job. 9. Prompts as files Import Text · Stage 3 · Chrome 155, Firefox 153, Bun 1.1.5, Deno 2.8; not yet in Safari or Node (compat data). Before: import { readFileSync } from 'node:fs' const prompt = readFileSync(new URL('./prompt.md', import.meta.url), 'utf8') After: import prompt from './prompt.md' with { type: 'text' } 10. One trace per agent run AsyncContext · Stage 2, the least mature of the three. Before: a runId passed through every call, or Node’s AsyncLocalStorage. import { AsyncLocalStorage } from 'node:async_hooks' const runId = new AsyncLocalStorage() runId.run(id, () => agent.start()) // anywhere deeper: log(runId.getStore(), message) After: AsyncContext, the same idea, meant for every runtime. const runId = new AsyncContext.Variable() runId.run(id, () => agent.start()) // anywhere deeper: log(runId.get(), message) Why: without a run ID on each log line, you can’t tell which run failed. For now it’s a direction to watch, not something to ship. Runtimes and types Node 26 runs features 1 to 7 and is scheduled to become LTS on 28 October 2026 (Node.js). Safari has 6 and 7 only in Technology Preview. TypeScript 7.1 beta, announced on 20 October, adds the ES2026 types (TypeScript). Set TypeScript’s lib to what your runtime has, not higher: the types don’t add the features. Then write your runtime and preferred APIs into CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md, so your coding agent knows them: ## Runtime - Node 26. Use Map.prototype.getOrInsert, Set methods, RegExp.escape and Temporal. - Keep IDs from external APIs as strings. I first posted this on LinkedIn on 21 October 2026. The maintained version, with every source and the date I last checked the support data, is on argbe.tech.

Another crazy AI find. If you use "page.route()" in playwright, it disables chrome http caching and all the requests become waaay more expensive. 0.5s per pageload -> 3.5s for our app. Makes our giant e2e test suite 5x slower for no good reason. playwright#22865

  8. A wrong "closed" never comes back: measuring a job-posting liveness checker on real pages --- title: 'A wrong "closed" never comes back: measuring a job-posting liveness checker on real pages' published: true description: "What I found in career-ops's liveness checker over 16 merged PRs, how I measured each fix on real job pages, and what it taught me about permanent decisions." tags: opensource, javascript, testing, playwright cover_image: dev-to-uploads.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com --- career-ops is an open-source job-search pipeline: Node.js scripts driven by AI coding CLIs, with about 76k stars on GitHub. Before it adds a posting to your pipeline, scan --verify checks that the posting is still open. Where the job board has a public API, it asks the API. Otherwise it loads the page in a headless browser and reads it. A "closed" or "blocked" verdict goes into your scan history for good, and that posting is skipped on every later scan. So the two ways to be wrong cost very different amounts. A wrong "open" costs one more check later. A wrong "closed" makes a live job disappear from your search without a trace. Between 3 and 20 October 2026 I had 16 pull requests merged into career-ops, most of them in this liveness checker. This is what I found, how I measured it, and what the fixes look like. How I found the bugs The board was busy: 135 open PRs and 208 open issues on 11 October. The project's CONTRIBUTING lets bug fixes go in without an issue, so instead of competing for claimed issues I read modules nobody was working on. I started with the ATS keyword and CV skill checks, which are close to my NLP background, then moved to the liveness checker. For the checker, I ran it on real postings and read every disagreement. The sources were public job-postings datasets (LinkedIn, USAJOBS) and live boards without an API. Several fixes also came out of the project's own conversations: a merge note from the maintainer, a follow-up the review bot offered, and three follow-ups from my reviews of other contributors' PRs. A blocked tracker took the whole page down Many people run a DNS filter that blocks ads and trackers: Pi-hole, AdGuard DNS, Control D, a hosts-file blocklist. Such a filter answers 0.0.0.0 for a tracker it blocks. The browser check has a security guard that refuses requests to private network addresses, and 0.0.0.0 is on its list. Refusing the tracker is right. But the guard also marked the whole page "blocked", which scan --verify records permanently. I found it while reviewing another contributor's PR that touches how the guard handles DNS answers. To measure it, I took 35 postings on 19 boards with no API, all live the day before, and checked each one with main's code and with the fix, behind two real filtering resolvers and with no filter as a control: - On main, 12 postings behind AdGuard DNS and 20 behind Control D read "blocked". - With the fix, none did. Behind Control D, 11 of those 20 read active with a visible Apply button. - With no filter, both versions agreed on 32 of 35. The 3 differences were flaky page loads, in both directions. The fix (#5015) leaves the guard's decision alone. The request is still refused, with the same error. The guard only tags the refusal when the only private addresses in the answer are the filter's: if (blocked.length > 0) { const denied = new Error(`Access denied: Egress guard blocked private target IP ${blocked[0].ip}`); if (blocked.every(({ hit }) => SINKHOLE_ADDRESSES.has(hit))) denied.livenessCode = 'dns_sinkhole'; throw denied; } A tagged refusal of a tracker, a script or an image no longer decides the page's verdict. Any other private address still counts, even next to 0.0.0.0. I rejected the simpler option, ignoring every private answer for subresources, because it would drop the guard's signal on a host that really resolves into a private network. The follow-up, #5075, covers the posting's own host. When that host had no usable address, the guard reported "blocked". But no address is often about the run, not the posting: a DNS outage during the scan, or the user's own filter blocking the job board. Now it reads uncertain, and the posting is kept for another check. With the posting's own host failing DNS, 19 of 19 postings from 19 boards were dropped permanently on main, and 19 of 19 were kept with the fix. The PR states the trade-off: a domain that is really gone now reads uncertain too, because one failed lookup can't tell a dead domain from an outage. A kept dead posting costs one more check later. A pinned live one never comes back. One failed load failed the rest of the run This one turned up while I was measuring another fix: a posting whose host no longer resolved broke the checks after it in the same run. I reproduced it on the code from before my DNS change, to rule that out, and traced it to the browser library the next day. The checker runs every browser check in one tab. When a page fails to load (its host has no address, its certificate has expired, its connection is reset), the browser shows its error page a moment after the checker has moved on, and that interrupts the next page load. The interrupted page then finishes loading late and interrupts the one after it, often to the end of the run. Those checks fail as load errors, so scan --verify keeps the postings without having checked them, and the closed ones among them go into the user's pipeline. The root is a known Playwright issue (microsoft/playwright#35944, closed upstream without a fix). Through the real CLI, on one list of 45 URLs with 6 failing loads spread among 39 postings that were live the day before: - On main, 39 of 39 postings read as load errors, from the first URL to the last. - With the fix, none did: 30 active, 1 expired (HTTP 404), 6 "no Apply control", 1 Cloudflare challenge and 1 timeout. Over 36 failed loads, the browser's error page landed 1 to 69 ms after the failure was reported, median 4 ms. So the fix (#5299) waits for the browser's own signal instead of a fixed delay, for at most 2 s: async function navigateSettled(page, navigate) { try { return await navigate(); } catch (err) { const canWait = typeof page.waitForEvent === 'function' && typeof page.mainFrame === 'function'; if (canWait && err?.name !== 'TimeoutError') { await page .waitForEvent('framenavigated', { predicate: (frame) => frame === page.mainFrame() && frame.url().startsWith('chrome-error:'), timeout: FAILED_NAVIGATION_COMMIT_MS, }) .catch(() => {}); } throw err; } } A timeout is left alone: a timed-out load shows no error page, and the next load cancels it, so waiting would only add 2 s. I rejected parking the tab on a blank page after a failure, which another part of the code does after a search, because that load is interrupted the same way. The review bot pointed out that the old page changing its own address could end the wait too early. I couldn't make that happen in real Chromium in 26 tries, but fixed it anyway, with a test the first version fails. CI installs no browser, so the tests use a stand-in page that plays out the browser's order of events. The same sequences also run on real Chromium where it can launch. A ground truth showed a case the issue had missed I filed #4832 for live postings on seven non-English boards that read as having no Apply button. getManfred, a Spanish tech-job board, was one. Its Apply button says "¡Apúntame!" ("sign me up"), which the checker didn't know, so every live posting read "no Apply control". getManfred's own feed marks every offer open or closed, so the A/B could measure against the board instead of against my reading of pages. The first run showed a case the issue had missed: one closed posting read open on both versions. Closed postings written in English often have an FAQ button such as "Can I apply if I live outside Spain?", and the English Apply pattern took it for an Apply button. The page does say the offer is closed, but that sentence renders near the bottom, after the checker's first look on some pages. Above the title, from the start, a closed posting says when it closed ("Oferta cerrada el 27/07/2023"). Closing patterns are read before the Apply button, so an FAQ button can't outvote the date. The fix (#5350) is two patterns: /\boferta cerrada el \d{1,2}\/\d{1,2}\/\d{4}/i, // a closing pattern, read before the Apply button /\bapuntame\b/i, // an Apply label, accent-free like the others I left out the verb "aplicar": 73 of the 111 getManfred pages I measured have an FAQ button that uses it, closed ones included. On 136 real page loads: - Live: all 28 open offers read active with the fix. On main, 25 read "no Apply control", and the other 3 read active only through their FAQ button. - Closed: all 83 read closed with the fix. On main, 17 read active, all of them written in English and read through the FAQ button. The board already knew the answer No Fluff Jobs, a Polish tech-job board, was the last of my board families from #4832, and the checker read it backwards. A live posting puts its Apply button ("Aplikuj") inside a page header, which the checker skips as page chrome, so every live posting read "no Apply control". A closed posting moves to a search page with a promo link that also says "Aplikuj", so most closed postings read as open. I'd planned label patterns. Then I found that the board's per-posting API says directly whether a posting is open. So the fix (#5428) is an API rung, as several other boards already have. The API answers "published" (open), "expired" (closed) or "does not exist". A status the rung doesn't know reads uncertain, never closed, and an answer it can't read falls back to the browser. Through the real CLI on 102 postings (40 live from the board's search API, 59 closed from Wayback Machine archives, 1 gone and 2 made up): - On main, all 40 live postings read "no Apply control", and 42 of the 59 closed ones read active. - With the fix, 40 of 40 read active and 59 of 59 read closed, without opening a browser: 26 s against 348 s. The review bot raised two valid points on it. I measured that they change no verdict on today's API answers and shipped them as a follow-up, #5533. VDAB, the job board of Flanders' public employment service, looks like the second case. A closed vacancy there keeps its page and its Apply button, and only a banner says it's closed. Reading the page while it renders, main read 13 of 84 loads of closed vacancies as open. My open PR, #5703, asks VDAB's per-vacancy API, which the page itself uses. One choice in it is deliberate: a "pending" vacancy reads uncertain, not closed, because one pending vacancy had never been published at all, and a closed verdict is recorded for good. How each fix was tested Every PR adds tests that fail on main and pass with the fix. I checked each one with mutation variants: deliberately broken versions of the fix that the tests must catch. On #4810, 13 of 13 were caught; on #4833, 12 of 12. I also ran the full suite on each branch against main. Over three weeks it grew from about 11,600 to about 16,800 tests. Among the things the maintainer's merge notes thanked were the edge-case tests: in the keyword check, the ones that keep "IT", "HR" and "AWS" from matching ordinary words; in the checker, the one for a button that is hidden or sits in the navigation. The rest of the work - Four fixes to the ATS keyword-coverage and CV skill-gap checks. The keyword check, for one, looked for a single English heading, so reports in the translated modes stopped with an error. Here is the same report under each mode's heading on main, from #4725: en ## Keywords extracted exit 0 coverage 80% de ## Extrahierte Keywords exit 1 No "## Keywords extracted" block found (or it is empty). es ## Palabras clave extraídas exit 1 same ko ## 추출한 키워드 exit 1 same zh ## ATS 关键词提取 exit 1 same On the branch, all five exit 0 at 80%. - One fix to the Gupy provider, whose API had moved to another host. It closed #4831, which I filed. - Reviews of five other contributors' liveness and scan PRs, all merged. Four authors applied my findings or suggested tests before merge, and a fifth took my suggestion into a new version. - #4832 is closed: every board in it has a merged fix. We split it by approach instead of racing. The contributor who wrote the providers for its Chinese boards moved them to per-posting APIs, another contributor took CareerViet, and I did the Dutch boards, getManfred and No Fluff Jobs. Three more PRs are open: #5535 (HiringRoom's "Postularse" label, approved), #5691 (Tech in Asia's Apply link in the page header) and #5703 (VDAB's API). Since 9 October I've been on the project's contributors team. Thanks to the maintainer for quick merges and for merge notes that say exactly what they valued. What I learned - Mistakes aren't symmetric when a pipeline makes permanent decisions. A false "open" costs one more check later. A false "closed" can't be undone. Most of my liveness fixes move an unsure case from permanent to retry-next-time. - Find a ground truth before trusting an A/B. getManfred's feed and VDAB's API measured the fixes, not my reading of pages. getManfred's feed also showed a case the issue had missed. - Look for the board's own API before patching the page reader. No Fluff Jobs looked like a label-and-pattern job. Its API answered both sides directly, needed no browser, and left the rules every board shares untouched. - Measure before changing a rule every board shares. The header skip looked like a bug on every board, but 821 real pages from 268 sites showed it hid only one board's Apply button. So #5691 (open) reads one narrow case, a link to the posting's own page, instead of every button in every header. - Separate the change from the page. Live pages differ from one load to the next, so two runs can disagree for reasons that have nothing to do with the code. Running both versions on the same loaded page at the same moment settles it: on #5691's control pages, all 5 verdict differences came with identical button lists. - Some bugs live between two systems. The failed-load chain came from the browser and its automation library disagreeing about when a failed load is over. Waiting for the browser's own signal stops the chain, at a cost of a few milliseconds per failed load. - Reviews count as contributions. Reviewing another contributor's DNS change led straight to the bug #5015 fixes. All 16 merged PRs: github.com/career-ops-hq/career-ops/pulls

  9. Playwright MCP found an isolation leak in time. With --isolated, one busy client kept another client's idle context alive. PR #43527 gives each client a timer. Test one active client beside one idle client. AgentOps Runbook. playwright#43527
