Made a dev environment that runs entirely in the browser, npm install included
Disclaimer: I'm one of the devs at Leaning Technologies, so this is skimming the line of side project a bit. It is free and open source though.
We make browser compiler related tools at my company, and recently built BrowserPod, a simulated Linux layer that runs entirely client side in the browser. Besides that being a pretty wild thing to exist, we haven't quite gotten the traction we hoped for, so a couple of us made browsercode.io (repo can be found here).
You clone a repo or pick a template and it just runs, npm install and all. Vite, Next and Nuxt are all supported.
Running coding agents in it works too, which is a genuinely nice use case imo, since the virtual filesystem is walled off from the rest of your system.
Would love for people to try it and let us know what they think. If you want the longer version, you can read our blog post on it here.

BrowserCode: a browser-based coding playground, powered by WebAssembly
BrowserCode is a development environment that runs entirely client-side, where you can fast prototype and share your running projects instantly. It has strong support for most popular node frameworks, just as an example you can see Vite + Svelte booting in your browser.
BrowserCode comes with an IDE where you can manually edit and play around with code snippets and a playground to run agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Pi, completely isolated from your system. Programs are compiled to WebAssembly and execute within the browser sandbox, powered by BrowserPod
BrowserCode is completely free to use and is open source. We welcome people to play with it, break it and report any issue in our Discord
