Lightweight Open-Source Alternative to IntelliJ IDEA
> TL;DR: OpenIDEA is built on a Rust core and Tauri desktop framework to replicate the familiar interface of heavy Java-based IDEs without the resource overhead. It bundles an editor, code insight, debugger, Git integration, terminal, and database and HTTP clients into a single compiled binary supporting over sixty languages.
> Best for: Developers who love IntelliJ keyboard shortcuts and tooling but want drastically lower memory usage and instant startup times.

What it is
OpenIDEA is a fast, native development environment built on TypeScript, Rust, and the Tauri framework. It replicates the interface and keymaps of heavy Java-based editors while drastically reducing resource overhead, consuming about 169 MB of memory and launching large repositories in under a second.
How it works
By leveraging a native Rust core, the application avoids the heavy memory footprint of traditional virtual machines. Plugins run securely inside sandboxed WebAssembly runtimes, while themes and language packs require no compiled code.
Key features
- Opens large repositories in 0.9 seconds with warm caches
- Uses 169 MB of memory compared to over 2 GB in traditional tools
- Includes editor, code insight, debugger, Git, terminal, database, and HTTP clients
- Supports over 60 programming languages
- Build custom extensions using the openidea-plugin new CLI tool
Getting started
Clone the repository from l0ng-ai/openidea, ensure you have the required build tools for Tauri and Rust, and follow the setup instructions in the readme to compile and run your local instance.
When not to use it
Skip this if you rely heavily on mature, complex proprietary plugins that have no equivalent in the preview WebAssembly plugin ecosystem.

嗯???
idea 也没逃过重写吗
不过这技术栈多少有点拧巴……tauri 加上一点 jvm 😨😨😨
jdtls 还是太权威了,能想象出开发者为了 java language server 捏着鼻子使用 jdtls 的场景了

Correction: Rust is more than just Tauri glue code (openidea#568). But considering that in an IDE the two performance critical parts are code processing (LSP) and frontend, I wonder how much benefit can you really get by making everything except of them in Rust.
Overall I actually agree that VSCode has proven that making responsive web based frontends is absolutely viable for the IDE, if you accept startup latency, size and memory use of CEF / Electron. And on Windows and macOS, system WebView may be sufficiently compatible (not on Linux anytime soon!), and they significantly amortize all of those downsides.
This ticket tries to explain it: openidea#568
Building consistent frontends for all platforms isn’t easy in rust, so they use web standards for that.
