Free GitHub tool: pick files quickly with fzf
fzf is a free, MIT-licensed fuzzy finder for the terminal. It takes a list of items and lets you narrow it by typing a few letters, then returns the item you select.
On a Mac with Homebrew:
1. `brew install fzf`
2. Run `fzf` from a folder to interactively choose a file.
You need a terminal and Homebrew for this route. No account or paid API is required. Optional shell shortcuts and completions need separate setup; the basic command works without them.

Sweet! Well-expressed, and well-explored. It's easy to setup an interface that makes search a bit easier still, including showing you a list as you interactively filter history, with fzf, [gh-fzf].
Examples of what users use most frequently, the key-bindings.{bash,zsh} has history key binds [arch-fzf]. The developer, junegunn, writes about it more generally, and all the other fun ways you can apply it [dev-fzf].
For a few years, I wrote history files per shell-spawn, and loaded a batch of history from recent days to keep fresh what's in the immediately searchable history.
Nowadays, I've just offloaded that to atuin [atuin], which I install from brew or with cargo binstall. Much less configuration, and now get to quickly explicitly switch between history lists filtered as: global, host (you can sync among hosts), session, directory, -- I don't remember what filter session+ means.

终端找文件和历史命令,总是翻半天?⌨️
fzf 提供模糊搜索和交互预览,还能配合 Shell 脚本。
键盘一搜就定位。🔎

This is useful on non-customized machines, but I always install fzf now, including the shell integrations like fuzzy history search bound to ctrl-r.

Too many files to hunt through?
fzf is a fuzzy finder for files, command history and almost any list.
Type a few letters and pick a match.

While digging into it, I found I could reproduce the rendering issue with fzf alone, so I also filed an upstream issue with a minimal repro 😹

Free GitHub tool: choose files quickly in Terminal with fzf
Ever run a command and wished you could search a list by typing a few letters? fzf is a free, open-source command-line fuzzy finder. It can help you pick a file from the current directory without remembering its full name.
On a Mac with Homebrew already installed, run `brew install fzf`. Move into a folder in Terminal, run `fzf`, type part of a filename, and press Enter to select it. The selected path is printed to the terminal. No account, subscription or paid API is required for this basic use.
It also has optional shell keybindings and integrations, but follow the project instructions to set those up. Official repo and installation guide: junegunn/fzf

fzf is still the fuzzy finder I reach for when everything else feels heavy. Pipe anything into it and pick.

fzf: a free GitHub tool for finding filenames without remembering the exact name
Remember part of a filename, but not the whole thing? fzf gives you a searchable list inside your terminal. As you type, it narrows the matches.
On a Mac with Homebrew already installed:
1. Open Terminal and run: brew install fzf
2. Move into the folder you want to search, then run: fzf
3. Type part of a filename, use the arrow keys and press Enter. It prints the selected path; it does not open the file. Escape cancels.
It's free, MIT-licensed software. Other supported installation methods, including Windows and Linux options, are in the README. Searching inside file contents is a separate job; this basic example searches filenames.
