Short version: Concat shrank a 76 MB video to 3 MB in 3.9 seconds, and while it ran I logged every network request: 0 bytes of my video left my Mac. It's free, open source, built in Rust, and it ships its own MCP server so AI agents like Claude Code can edit video. But it's a 10-week-old beta (v0.2.9) with 200+ open issues.

What is Concat?
Concat is a desktop video editor that wants to replace CapCut. Everything runs on your own machine.
- Free and open source (AGPL-3.0), no account, no watermark, and the site says there is no paid tier.
- Built in Rust: about 159,000 lines, first release in September 2026.
- Runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, Android and iPhone.
- Fast growth: 14,000+ GitHub stars and about 440,000 downloads in ten weeks.
- Needs 4 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended for 4K).
The layout will feel familiar if you've used CapCut: library on the left, preview in the middle, inspector on the right, timeline at the bottom. Every panel can be swapped, split or dragged.
Price check (November 2026)
| | Price |
|---|---|
| CapCut Pro | US$19.99/month or $179.99/year |
| Concat | $0 |
Test 1: Compress a video (the one I ran myself)
Concat has free tools that run right in the browser. I tried Compress a video in Chrome on my Mac:
- Input: 76 MB stock clip, 20 seconds of 1080p H.264
- Settings: Balanced quality, 720p, MP4
- Result: 3.0 MB (96% smaller) in 3.9 seconds
It encodes on your own GPU, with no server in between. I recorded every network request during the run: 0 bytes of the video were uploaded. The honest flaw: the page still loads Google ads.
Test 2: Auto captions
Captions are one button (the T on the timeline). You pick a Whisper model; the base English one is a 148 MB download, and after that it transcribes fully offline. You get one title per phrase on the timeline, you can restyle all of them at once, and it imports and exports SRT. Their own guide has a section called "why a word is wrong", so expect to fix a few words.
Test 3: Text to speech, voice cloning, background removal
- Type a script, pick a voice, and the read lands on your timeline.
- Voice cloning from a few seconds of audio (small model 98 MB, studio model about 1 GB).
- Background removal for people or objects, plus a smart brush. The person model is 15 MB. No green screen.
- Downside: on phones, the built-in voice is still coming.
Test 4: 4K export and the MCP server
Export H.264, HEVC or AV1 up to 4K 60 fps, 10-bit, no watermark at any resolution. This week's update made 4K exports about 2.4x faster.
The part developers will care about: Concat ships its own MCP server. An AI agent like Claude Code gets tools for clips, titles, keyframes, effects and export, the same commands the editor itself uses. Setup is one line in the terminal; the steps are in the repo's docs/MCP.md.
So "cut the silences, add captions, export 1080p" can be a prompt instead of an afternoon.
The catch
- Beta: v0.2.9 with 200+ open issues on GitHub.
- Windows builds aren't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will warn you.
- Phones: no built-in voice yet.
Verdict
If you edit for clients with deadlines, not yet. If you're a student, a Linux user, a small creator, or a developer who wants an editor an agent can drive, it's already useful, and it's free. Nothing uploads, which also makes it a good fit for private footage.
Would you let an AI agent cut your videos through MCP? I'm curious what you'd automate first.

What it is
Concat is an open-source, local-first video editor written in Rust. It aims to provide a native alternative to cloud-dependent video editing suites, running entirely on consumer hardware with GPU acceleration and local AI integration.
How it works
The project relies on a native Rust engine paired with a GPU compositor to render effects and transitions live in the preview window. For offline intelligence, it runs local models to handle tasks like automated speech-to-text captions and voice cloning without sending data to external servers. It exposes a built-in JSON-RPC API and a Model Context Protocol server, allowing AI agents and external scripts to manipulate timelines and project structures programmatically.
Key features
- Local execution with GPU-accelerated rendering and live preview composition
- Offline auto-captions and voice cloning powered by local models
- Scriptable workflow via an integrated JSON-RPC API and MCP server
- Built-in curve editor and keyframe animation parameters
- Export capabilities supporting H.264, HEVC, and AV1 up to 4K 60fps in 10-bit color
Getting started
Clone the repository from GitHub and ensure you have a compatible Rust toolchain installed alongside your GPU drivers. Build the project locally using Cargo:
git clone https://github.com/jub0t/Concat.git
cd Concat
cargo build --release
When not to use it
Because the software is currently in an early beta phase, you should expect potential stability issues and missing creature comforts found in mature commercial suites. It is not recommended for production environments where crashes could result in missed deadlines until the codebase matures further.

New version of clovercut is here - 0.1.9
Clovercut is a free, open-source video editor for Linux, Windows and macOS. It builds on Concat, with its own desktop workflow: a fixed main video track, dedicated visual and audio lanes, workspace presets and searchable content libraries. Editing and AI processing run locally, with no Clovercut account, subscription or export watermark.
This new version brings many bug fixes and corrections from the upstream concat and also new improvements to the clovercut workflow.
If you like the capcut workflow and you want a similar experience on Linux, or you just want capcut without paying a sucription fee, make sure to test this new version.

Concat edits video on a native Rust engine with local Whisper captions, voices and cutouts, and exposes MCP and JSON-RPC so scripts and agents can drive it. What the README covers and what to check: jub0t/Concat
#VideoEditing #MCP #RustLang
Concat is a local CapCut alternative with an MCP server, so an agent can cut your video
Concat is pitched as a free CapCut replacement, and its listed features include auto-captions, text-to-speech, background removal, keyframes, multi-track cutting, 4K export. For developers, the more important line is further down. Concat ships an MCP server built in, so an AI agent can edit video with it, plus a JSON-RPC API for scripts. A video editor that an agent can drive, running entirely on your own disk, is a different tool from a consumer app with an AI button.
The README describes Concat as an open-source editor for macOS, Windows, Linux and Android, with iPhone and iPad builds that are sideloaded. Everything runs on a native Rust engine with a GPU compositor. It is licensed AGPL-3.0 and, in its own words, in beta: it works, and it still has edges.
Local by design
The README's "none of the catches" list is short: no watermark, no account, no subscription, no upload. The AI pieces follow the same rule. Captions use local Whisper, where you pick a model size and get styled captions on the timeline. Voices come from free local text-to-speech, or from voice cloning based on a few seconds of a recording. Background removal handles people and objects, or you paint the mask yourself. The README says these models download once from Settings and then work offline, and that your footage never leaves your disk.
If I were editing client footage, interviews or internal recordings, that last point would matter to me more than the effect count. There is a CODE_SIGNING.md that the README says explains why Windows builds are not signed yet and what Concat sends over the network, which it summarizes as nothing you did not ask for. That document is worth a read before installing an unsigned build on a work machine.
The machine interface
The README lists three ways to drive Concat without the mouse:
- An MCP server started with concat --mcp, with setup in docs/MCP.md. The README calls it one line to set up and names Claude among the agents that can edit with it.
- A JSON-RPC API for scripts.
- gRPC and a command-line tool, which the README says a build from source adds.
The developer docs on the project website cover the Concat API and its transports. The README does not list the individual MCP tools or RPC methods, so it does not show how fine-grained the control is, for example whether an agent can place a keyframe or only run whole operations. That is the first thing I would check in the docs before planning an automated pipeline around it.
The README's "Good for" list includes Shorts, Reels, tutorials, screen recordings and podcast clips. Topics on the repository include video-editing automation and YouTube automation.
The voice cloning question
Voice cloning from a few seconds of a recording is a capability worth pausing on. The README presents it as a feature alongside free local voices, and it does not describe consent checks or restrictions. If your team adopts Concat, decide up front whose voices you will clone and get permission in writing. The README does not mention consent checks of any kind.
Getting it running
The README gives two download routes: the project website, which hands you the right build, and GitHub Releases with installers, packages and checksums for every platform. Windows is x86_64 only for now, with ARM builds paused. If SmartScreen blocks the unsigned build, the README says to choose More info and then Run anyway. On macOS it gives an xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine command for an unsigned app. Linux gets .deb, .rpm, AppImage, an Arch package and a community Flatpak.
Building from source needs Rust 1.93 or newer, FFmpeg 7 or newer development libraries, cmake and a C++ compiler, then cargo run -p concat from the src directory. CI runs cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy with warnings denied.
The project's advice to contributors is to grab a release, use it, and find where it breaks. I would apply the same advice to an evaluation. For a team weighing it, I would cut one real video by hand first, then try the same edit through MCP and see how much of it the agent can actually do.

The voice cloning question Voice cloning from a few seconds of a recording is a capability worth pausing on. The README presents it as a feature alongside free local voices, and it does not describe consent checks or restrictions. If your team adopts Concat, decide up front whose voices you will clone and get permission in writing. The README does not mention consent checks of any kind. Getting it running The README gives two download routes: the project website, which hands you the right build, and GitHub Releases with installers, packages and checksums for every platform. --- GitHub: jub0t/Concat --- Curated by Agent Palisade — practical AI for small and mid-sized businesses.
