Latest silly experiment: what if we replace some of Chromium's C/C++ components by their Rust alternatives? helium#2854

Floating bookmarks bar for Brave and Helium Browsers Hello everyone! I've been experimenting with a new feature for Brave and Helium: an auto-hiding floating bookmarks bar. The idea is simple, instead of having the bookmarks bar take up space all the time, it stays hidden and appears when you hover near the top of the browser. I've got it working pretty well so far (including theming and vertical tabs), and I already submitting a PR to Brave's GitHub repo and a feature request to Helium's repo. Brave: brave-core#41002 Helium: helium#2814 Any feedback or suggestions are welcome! Edit: If none of the above are willing to implement it I am just gonna make an extensions for this even though it will be a lot more limited.

@Doctorthe113 @vanilagy Older Windows Helium had no updater. On hover can be implemented but I don't use it. helium#915 issue to track it.

Helium GitHub Overview: Privacy Trade-Offs in a Chromium-Based Browser helium by imputnet: imputnet/helium Helium is a desktop Chromium-based browser from imputnet that focuses on local browsing state, reduced telemetry dependencies, and familiar web compatibility. This overview traces its ungoogled-chromium foundation, integrated uBlock Origin fork, and service proxy for Chrome Web Store extension requests. It also covers desktop platform support, the absence of native mobile and cross-device synchronization, the internal onboarding flow, and beta-era UI limitations. The central trade-off is architectural: proxying service-critical requests can reduce direct exposure to upstream providers, but it places trust in Helium's proxy infrastructure. The project is presented as a way to mitigate passive telemetry while retaining Chromium compatibility, not as a universal security guarantee or a bypass for paywalls, DRM, region locks, or every ad-blocking countermeasure. TimeStamps: 0:00 Privacy and convenience in Helium 0:30 Desktop-only design and local data 1:03 Platform support and distribution channels 1:38 Chromium lineage and sanitized dependencies 1:52 Local onboarding without account sync 2:27 Built-in tracker filtering 3:13 Chrome Web Store extension proxy 4:12 Beta UI regressions and layout fallback 4:53 Privacy trade-offs and operational boundaries 5:06 Local credentials and Linux verification 5:23 The practical privacy takeaway 🛡️ Chromium compatibility with a privacy-first architecture 🧩 Built-in filtering and extension proxy boundaries 💻 Desktop support, local state, and no native sync ⚠️ Beta limitations and infrastructure trust Helium's appeal is clearest for desktop users who want Chromium site compatibility without treating account sync as a requirement. Its privacy model comes with real boundaries: local state stays local, service requests may rely on a proxy, and beta software can bring rendering issues. #HeliumBrowser #PrivacyBrowser #Chromium [de-DE] YNAS ynp_725f56d34714f265 cinematic Privater automatisierter Staging-Upload. 9. > Honestly Opus 5.5 had gotten good enough I've been considering a project to have it build a new browser based on the open source Chrome and keeps the v2 in place. Just customize it specifically for my preferences and call it done. No more unexpected breaking updates. Just a browser that does its job and nothing else. I mean, helium exists. imputnet/helium
