I wanted Helix to work the way I like, so I made my own fork I've been getting back to Helix over and over again, but each time it left me with just a few features I had in Emacs/Vim and did not have in Helix. The core devs are slow to merge stuff so there's no hope the features will be merged any time soon... (be sure I deeply respect the devs and their priorities) It turned out it is possible to get one’s own helix by forking it and tailoring it to particular needs. I've got ChatGPT Go sub as well as a free opencode account with Big Pickle and Deep Seek Flash - those turned out to be a really great help! So far, the fork includes: - Automatic file reload — imported from PR #13963. Helix detects files modified externally and offers to reload them. - Recent files picker — imported from PR #15022. - Multi-root file picker — my own addition. I have several directories containing projects, documents, notes, etc. Now I can search across all of them from a single picker, without switching workspaces. Nothing revolutionary, just the things I need to do my workflows. But the point is that there are plenty of pull requests out there you can just integrate into your fork - that simple! Repository: pavlo/helix I am sharing this to show that the times have long changed, you can do whatever you need without relying on other people. Grab a simple AI model and you'll get THE Helix in a few evenings! To realize that was quite unexpected so I share it here as someone else would find this approach useful too.

  2. Well, it didn't take me long to feel disappointed with #HelixEditor: I only just discovered macros are not persisted across sessions. Making them pretty useless. The discussion on the topic is 5 years old helix#401 which is only a couple of years older than the discussion on a plugin system so people can roll their own 😞 helix#8675 Damn #vim

Fork of helix now supports multiple new features Hello Everyone, I am currently working on a helix fork for some time now. It is here - gj1118/helix With the recent changes that went into master , we are now supporting the following features 1. Built in file explorer ( no need to depend on yazi or any other file explorers ) - It can be moved either to the left side or the right side. Has mouse support too. If you don’t like a left/right explorer mode, you can also have a floating explorer window (screenshots are present on the main readme page) Processing img 2uwwgix2xiyh1... Processing img 4y22c75axiyh1... Processing img 5pl4tw0gxiyh1... 1. Persist State has been merged in via this PR - helix#86 2. Project wide diagnostics (not just the open files diagnostics ) . If you project is very large , it takes a few seconds (keep notitcing the LSP spinner - you might need to enable it in config if you haven't) 3. Performance improvements 4. Code Folding - helix#14593 5. helix#12043 6. Breadcrumbs Navigation bar - helix#15573 I am pretty sure, that I am missing mentioning more features here and my sincere apologies for the same. If you are a helix user and are interested in this fork, can I please ask you to checkout latest code from master , build it , test it and then let me know what you think of it ? I will very well appreciate your suggestions/critiscisms/advice et all . Thank you. Happy Helixing!!! P.S. I am just a maintainer of a helix fork. Without the work done by its original authors and numerous other people around with world, this would not been possible. Thanks to each and everyone of you.

  4. Level Up Your Coding with Helix: The Modern Terminal Editor Built in Rust! --- title: Level Up Your Coding with Helix: The Modern Terminal Editor Built in Rust! published: True tags: code, rust, terminal, lsp --- Quick Summary: 📝 Helix is a post-modern modal text editor written in Rust, inspired by Kakoune and Neovim. It focuses on a unique editing model with multiple selections and integrates advanced features like built-in language server support and smart syntax highlighting via tree-sitter. Key Takeaways: 💡 - ✅ Helix is a fast, modern terminal editor written in Rust. - ✅ It features Kakoune-inspired modal editing and powerful multiple selections. - ✅ Built-in Language Server Protocol (LSP) support provides smart code intelligence without extra setup. - ✅ Tree-sitter enables advanced, structural syntax highlighting and code editing. - ✅ It offers a highly efficient and intuitive coding experience with minimal configuration. Project Statistics: 📊 - ⭐ Stars: 46697 - 🍴 Forks: 3881 - ❗ Open Issues: 1126 Tech Stack: 💻 - ✅ Rust Hey fellow developers! Are you constantly on the lookout for tools that can genuinely supercharge your coding workflow? Do you dream of a terminal editor that's both lightning-fast and incredibly powerful, without drowning you in endless configuration files? Well, prepare to be excited because I've stumbled upon a project that's been making waves, and you absolutely need to check it out: the Helix editor! Inspired by the innovative editing models of Kakoune and Neovim, Helix isn't just another text editor; it's a fresh take on how we interact with our code. Built from the ground up in Rust, it brings with it the promise of blazing performance and rock-solid stability. If you've ever appreciated Vim's modal editing but wished for something a bit more intuitive or powerful for modern development, Helix might just be your new best friend. What truly sets Helix apart are its core features, which are integrated right out of the box. First up, its modal editing system, heavily inspired by Kakoune, focuses on selecting first, then acting. This 'verb-object' paradigm often feels more natural and efficient for complex edits, especially when combined with its killer feature: multiple selections. Imagine being able to select and modify multiple discontinuous pieces of text simultaneously – it's a game-changer for refactoring and repetitive tasks. But wait, there's more! For any serious developer, Language Server Protocol (LSP) support is non-negotiable these days. Helix delivers this brilliantly, with built-in LSP integration. This means you get intelligent auto-completion, go-to-definition, refactoring tools, and diagnostics without needing to install and configure a myriad of plugins. It just works, right out of the box, for many languages. This alone saves a tremendous amount of setup time and frustration. Adding to its intelligence is its use of Tree-sitter. Instead of simple regex-based syntax highlighting, Tree-sitter provides a deep, structural understanding of your code. This enables smarter, incremental syntax highlighting, but more importantly, it paves the way for advanced code editing features that understand the context of your code, making tasks like selecting logical blocks or refactoring much more robust and precise. It's like having a compiler's brain helping you edit! For developers, the benefits are clear: a significantly faster and more intuitive editing experience thanks to modal editing and multiple selections, reduced configuration overhead with built-in LSP, and smarter code interaction powered by Tree-sitter. Helix aims to provide a powerful, modern coding environment in your terminal, letting you focus on writing great code, not wrestling with your editor. It's still actively developed, but it's already incredibly usable and a joy to work with. Seriously, give Helix a spin – your fingers will thank you! I have considered them! Neither has a clear stance on LLM generated code: helix#15408 and discuss.kakoune.com I feel like Kakoune probably doesn't, but I'd prefer a project that takes a stance against them.

  6. the same machinery also powers a more mundane flow I have always wanted in Helix: inline comments to an agent in another pane. the funny thing is the sending part is trivial, but writing this comment box from scratch in Lisp (see helix#8675) is the ugliest thing I've ever seen

  8. This is the dependency list of the just command runner github.com/casey/just/blob/master/Cargo.lock And the helix editor github.com/helix-editor/helix/blob/master/Cargo.l… Compare them to the dependencies of gnu make (pretty sure it’s only posix) gitlab.alpinelinux.org And vim gitlab.alpinelinux.org ### Downloading the internet to build a smallish software is always bad in my opinion.

  9. Oh interesting, I went to look more after you said that and noticed the lack of activity indeed, there's even a discussion about it: helix#16261 That said, fwiw, I haven't felt the need for anything on it and it feels "complete" to me as far as my daily use goes Maintaining OSS is tough, do you know what the community has been wanting lately that it lacks? Maybe I'm an outlier user or I don't know what I don't know

  10. Commenting as an outsider to both projects, one possible motivation to fork Helix might be this PR: helix#8675 Helix was originally meant to be a "batteries included" editor without any scripting/plugins. That PR intends to change this and so there is a bit of controversy around it. Overall it looks like the PR will eventually be merged. The Mitos fork could have be made for totally unrelated reasons. This is really just my speculation.
