Yet another clean and useful launcher
I got tired of LG’s home screen: ads, row of LG apps, and that useless top image of a car on an empty road. And it had no clocks! So I built my own launcher for webOS and use it every day on my LG QNED (webOS 25).
It’s called Simple LG launcher. It’s a fork of Hearth by rudra-avatar and borrows ideas from Glasshouse and Luma. Without those projects I wouldn’t have known where to start.
I wanted it to be more than clean and pretty. I wanted it to be useful on a TV, and still fast. So on one screen you get:
- a big clock with the date
- the weather now, an hourly curve and 7 days ahead (Open-Meteo, no account)
- your day from Google Calendar, several calendars at once, with a month view
- one row of your apps, nothing else
- your own wallpapers or a slideshow, with frosted-glass cards that adjust to the picture behind them
The weather and calendar aren’t just decoration: you can move onto them with the remote and scroll through the days.
Speed was the main rule. It draws from saved data first and refreshes everything quietly in the background. While another app is open it stops its clock and releases the wallpaper, so it doesn’t take memory from your streaming app. It also runs on old TVs, since it’s built for Chrome 53.
It can also take LG Home’s place, so the Home button opens it. It needs a rooted TV with the Homebrew Channel.
If you don’t want to do the setup yourself, give the repo link to Claude Code or Codex. There’s a step-by-step file in the repo for exactly that, and the agent asks before it changes anything on the TV.
