[Release] Desktop Melee v0.1.1: the Melee decomp running on your macOS desktop, out now
Yesterday I posted a preview of Desktop Melee here. It's now released!
Repo + download: Mwrnk/desktop-melee
Quick recap if you missed the preview: it's a fork of melee-pc that runs Super Smash Bros. Melee as a transparent, click-through overlay on top of your Mac's desktop. The fighters stand on your Dock, the screen edges are the blast zones, and your apps keep working underneath. You set up matches from a menu bar app (characters, costumes, CPU levels, controllers). It's built on doldecomp/melee and melee-pc + aurora, so it's Melee's real code running natively, not an emulator.
How it works, briefly:
- the frame keeps its alpha all the way to a non-opaque Metal layer, so only fighters, effects and the HUD are drawn, and clicks go straight through the window
- Final Destination loads with its model hidden, and its collision is stretched to span your Dock exactly (the ledges are the Dock's edges)
- a fixed camera maps the screen into Melee units, so the screen edges are the blast zones
- stocks and percents sit in an island around the MacBook notch, and a SwiftUI menu bar app sets up matches
There's a layer-by-layer write-up in the repo if you want the details: github.com/Mwrnk/desktop-melee/blob/main/docs/des…
What's new since the preview: you can just download it now (v0.1.1), no compiling needed, and the first-launch setup got a glow-up.
Heads up: the app isn't notarized, so macOS will block it the first time. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and hit Open Anyway (steps in the README). The very first launch also takes ~5 min while it builds shaders, after that it's a few seconds.
What's next: Windows and Linux are on the way. And a bunch of you asked about using windows as platforms. Honestly that was the og idea, and it's the next big thing I'm working on.
No game files are included, not in the repo and not in the release. You point it at your own dump (USA 1.02, verified by hash), and everything is read from it at runtime.
Status: still a WIP / beta. 1v1 on the Dock (human or CPU), macOS only for now (Apple silicon, macOS 27). Expect some rough edges, and bug reports are super welcome.
Huge thanks to the doldecomp team, 999sian and the melee-pc contributors, and encounter for aurora, none of this exists without them. Feedback, bug reports and PRs welcome!
