Obsidian Genesis: a free starter kit that sets up a new vault through a conversation — looking for 5 testers
Hi everyone! I’m working on Obsidian Genesis, a free, MIT-licensed starter kit for people who want to try Obsidian but could use some help setting up their first vault.
The idea is simple: download the kit, give the folder to an AI assistant with file access, and answer questions about what you want to organize. The assistant uses your answers to prepare a new vault with:
- A first project, including its goal and next actions.
- A dashboard linking to your projects and tasks.
- Folders for sources, drafts and finished work.
- Project notes and instructions designed to help an assistant pick up where you left off.
For example, you could use a fictional study project, answer the setup questions, then open the resulting folder in Obsidian and find your project from the dashboard.
I’m looking for five volunteers to try that workflow, especially people who are new to Obsidian. Automated checks pass, but I still need to find out whether the setup makes sense to someone who hasn’t been building it.
If you’d like to help:
1. Download the kit and follow the README using a small fictional project.
2. Open the prepared vault in Obsidian.
3. Tell me what worked, where you got stuck, and whether you needed help.
Please include your operating system, assistant used, and previous experience with Obsidian. Feedback here is welcome; GitHub Discussions and Issues are also available. An unsuccessful attempt is useful feedback too.
The kit is for new vaults. There are guides for Claude Code, OpenCode and ChatGPT, though testing coverage differs between them. The English README explains the setup; much of the internal documentation is currently in Spanish.
The kit itself is free. Any assistant costs and data processing depend on the service you choose. Please use fictional information for testing.
Repository and English setup guide
It builds on davidkimai’s Context Engineering work. I developed the adaptation with substantial assistance from Claude, Codex and OpenCode. I’d appreciate hearing how it behaves in other people’s hands.
