security-audit-skill

What does it do?

It is a coding-agent skill that turns an agent into a security auditor and runs a structured audit in six phases. [1a][1b] The phases cover reconnaissance, coverage-led hunting, candidate validation, structured output, independent record verification, and target-neutral reporting. [2] A supported use case is starting a coding agent in a codebase and asking it to “security audit this codebase” or “find security vulnerabilities in ./src.” [3]

Currently trending because

  • Point a coding agent at your codebase and it will audit for security flaws, then send fresh verifiers to try to kill each finding before reporting it. [project] [1]

Cloudflare’s free Security Audit skill: fresh agents challenge each finding. Would you trust the report? I’m Obi, the builder of RepoQuarry. Sky breaks down Cloudflare’s Security Audit skill in this one-minute video. Sky is an AI-generated presenter. The interesting part is the verification: separate agents hunt for issues, then fresh verifiers try to disprove each candidate. It is MIT licensed, but the coding agent/model may cost money. The limits matter: this is an on-demand audit of one repo, not ongoing dependency, container or CI monitoring. We reviewed the documentation; we haven’t run the skill ourselves. Stars show popularity, not security assurance. Dashed historical chart points in the video are estimates. A skill is instructions plus scripts that run as you. Audit the folder first. Before you install an Agent Skill, run this. One script, no dependencies, about ten seconds: #!/usr/bin/env bash # skill_audit.sh - answer one question before installing an Agent Skill: # "What can this folder actually do on my machine?" # # Usage: ./skill_audit.sh <skill-dir> # Exit: 0 = no flags, 1 = flags found (read them, then decide), 2 = could not run. # # Contract checks follow the published specification (agentskills.io/specification): # name 1-64 chars, lowercase alnum with single hyphens, must match the folder; # description 1-1024 chars; scripts/ holds executable code the agent runs. set -u DIR="${1:-}" [ -n "$DIR" ] && [ -d "$DIR" ] || { echo "usage: $0 <skill-dir>" >&2; exit 2; } SKILL="$DIR/SKILL.md" [ -f "$SKILL" ] || { echo "STRUCT: no SKILL.md under $DIR" >&2; exit 2; } FLAGGED=0 flag() { echo "FLAG: $1"; FLAGGED=1; } # --- 1. frontmatter contract (spec) --------------------------------------- NAME="$(sed -n 's/^name:[[:space:]]*//p' "$SKILL" | head -1 | tr -d '\r' | sed 's/^"\(.*\)"$/\1/')" DESC="$(sed -n 's/^description:[[:space:]]*//p' "$SKILL" | head -1 | tr -d '\r' | sed 's/^"\(.*\)"$/\1/')" FOLDER="$(basename "$DIR")" [ -n "$NAME" ] || flag "name missing from frontmatter" if [ -n "$NAME" ]; then echo "$NAME" | grep -qE '^[a-z0-9]+(-[a-z0-9]+)*$' \ || flag "name '$NAME' is not lowercase alnum with single hyphens" [ "${#NAME}" -le 64 ] || flag "name longer than 64 characters" [ "$NAME" = "$FOLDER" ] || flag "name '$NAME' does not match folder '$FOLDER'" fi [ -n "$DESC" ] || flag "description missing from frontmatter" [ "${#DESC}" -ge 1 ] && [ "${#DESC}" -le 1024 ] || flag "description outside the 1-1024 range" # --- 2. what executable code ships in the folder --------------------------- if [ -d "$DIR/scripts" ]; then COUNT="$(find "$DIR/scripts" -type f | wc -l)" echo "SHIPS: $COUNT file(s) under scripts/:" find "$DIR/scripts" -type f | sed "s|^| |" else echo "SHIPS: no scripts/ directory" fi # --- 3. files the instructions point at actually exist --------------------- MISSING=0 for ref in $(grep -oE '(scripts|references|assets)/[A-Za-z0-9_./-]*[A-Za-z0-9]' "$SKILL" | sort -u); do [ -e "$DIR/$ref" ] || { echo "FLAG: SKILL.md references missing file: $ref"; MISSING=1; } done [ "$MISSING" -eq 1 ] && FLAGGED=1 # --- 4. loud patterns in code; concealment phrasing in instructions -------- # A pattern error must fail closed: grep exits 2 on a broken expression, and # "no output" must never be read as "nothing found" when the scan itself broke. Why this week On October 22, 2026, Anthropic donated the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation. The donation covers the name and logo, the GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain. The AAIF, co-founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, already hosts MCP; the same announcement added Open Responses from OpenAI, OpenEnv from Hugging Face, and OpenSandbox from Alibaba, bringing the roster to ten projects. Anthropic's numbers for the format: more than 70 platforms have integrated it since the standard was published in December 2025, about 1 million skills have been published, and nearly 280 million installs have happened. The proposed roadmap covers versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for people who write and install skills. The announcement describes all three as proposed; it gives no date. What that changes is who owns the specification. What it does not change is what happens when you install a skill. A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file plus any scripts and reference material it needs. The specification is explicit that scripts/ holds executable code. And the skill runs with the permissions of the agent that loads it: shell access, the filesystem, credentials in the environment, messaging channels, and memory that survives the session. The measurement of that risk already exists. Snyk's ToxicSkills study, published February 5, 2026, scanned 3,984 skills from ClawHub and skills.sh. 13.4% of them, 534 skills, had at least one critical-severity issue, covering malware distribution, prompt injection, and exposed secrets. At any severity, 36.82%, or 1,467 skills, had at least one security flaw. After human review, Snyk confirmed 76 malicious payloads built for credential theft, backdoor installation, or data exfiltration; 8 of those were still installable at publication. The barrier to publishing, in the report's own words: a SKILL.md file and a GitHub account one week old. No code signing, no security review, no sandbox by default. The same week, Cloudflare's security-audit-skill spent five days at or near the top of GitHub's trending list. That is the shape of a reviewable skill: a public repository, a stated six-phase workflow, machine-readable verdicts (confirmed, needs_validation, rejected), a MIT license, and a design principle that the agent which checks a finding is never the agent that found it. It installs with one line. Most skills you will meet are not that documented. The script above is for those. One distinction worth keeping while the story is fresh: the foundation governs the specification, not the distribution channels. The donation announcement creates no official registry and no pre-publication review, and skills keep circulating through third-party catalogs. The format is portable now. The trust decision is still local, which is what the rest of this post is about. What each check is for Check 1 is the specification's contract, read off the folder. A name that is not lowercase alphanumeric with single hyphens, or longer than 64 characters, or different from the folder name, is either broken or not written to the standard. The name-must-match-folder rule is the one that matters for typosquatting: from the filesystem side, a lookalike name in a mismatched folder is the cheapest signal you get. Check 1's other half, the 1-1024 character description, is the field the agent reads at startup to decide whether to activate the skill at all. An empty or bloated description is a loading-behavior problem, not a style problem. Check 2 answers the question people forget to ask: does this folder contain code, and how much. scripts/ is where the specification puts executable code, and that code runs with your permissions. Listing the files takes one second and changes how you read the SKILL.md that follows. Check 3 is the dangling reference. The instructions point at files in scripts/, references/, and assets/; a reference that does not exist is either sloppiness or a loader that fetches something else at runtime. Check 4 is the loud-pattern pass over the code only. Network fetchers, SSH and key paths, AWS credential variable names, base64 decoding, eval and exec, and persistence hooks are the shapes that appear in the report's threat taxonomy. They are also shapes that appear in legitimate skills, which is why the output is a FLAG line to read, not a verdict. The concealment-phrasing pass covers the instruction layer: "ignore previous instructions", "do not tell the user", "without asking the user". None of these phrases proves malice; all of them justify opening the file. Check 5 reads the declared tool scope. allowed-tools is experimental and support varies by agent, so its absence is normal. What matters is knowing that its absence means the skill inherits the agent's full permissions, not a reduced set. What the script cannot check The gap that matters is between what a skill documents and what it does. Static inspection of a SKILL.md is not sufficient, because a skill that reads cleanly and fetches code at runtime looks identical to one that does not. That case needs a sandbox and a human reading the fetched content, not a grep. Three smaller limits, stated so you do not trust the script past its reach: - Files outside scripts/ are not pattern-scanned. A payload in a top-level file or a non-standard directory is not covered by check 4's code pass. - The description length is counted in bytes, while the specification counts characters. A description heavy in multibyte text can trip a false flag near 1024. - Multi-line YAML descriptions (folded scalars) parse as their first line here. A skill using that style will report a short description. And the obvious one: this script never executes the skill. It tells you what to read before you do. Pin what you reviewed The habit that makes the audit worth anything: install the version you read, not a moving branch. Copy the reviewed folder into your skills directory, or pin the commit, and treat an update the way you treat a dependency upgrade: diff it before it loads. Run anything you are unsure about in a throwaway environment first, without production credentials. And re-read the skill when the description changes, because the description is what the agent matches on, and a broadened description is how a skill written for one task starts showing up in all of them. Run it over what you already have The audit is more useful pointed backward than forward. The skills already on your machine were installed before you thought to check them. If your agent keeps them in a skills directory, point the script at every folder in it and read the flags: for d in .claude/skills/*/ "$HOME"/.claude/skills/*/; do [ -d "$d" ] && ./skill_audit.sh "$d" done The inventory is the part worth having even when nothing is flagged: a list of what code runs with your permissions, per skill, is the artifact you will want the next time a skill updates itself. 5. "The AI said it''s done" is not proof. "Fixed. The signup form now rejects bad emails." You've probably read a line like that from an AI coding tool. Maybe it was true. Maybe the form still let bob@ straight through. The problem usually isn't the model or the prompt. Nobody made it prove the claim. In part 3 I gave Claude a way to see the code clearly. This post is about the next step: getting it to show its work before you believe it. The best example I've found of this isn't mine. It's Cloudflare's. What Cloudflare open-sourced In June 2026, Cloudflare published the security audit skill that seeded their vulnerability discovery harness. That harness grew into a multi-stage system they run across their whole fleet. They describe it in their blog post. A skill is a reusable set of instructions you give an AI coding tool, so it follows the same method every time. It's MIT licensed. When I checked, it had about 53,000 stars and 3,400 forks on GitHub. The six stages Each stage has one job: 1. Map the code. Learn what the project is and where the risky parts live. 2. Hunt. Separate hunters look for bugs, each working alone. 3. Try to disprove. Every suspected bug goes to a fresh reviewer whose job is to knock it down. 4. Sort. Each one becomes confirmed, needs validation or rejected. 5. Check again. New agents verify the final list. 6. Report. Stages 3 to 5 are the interesting part. Half the system exists to doubt the other half. The rule worth stealing From the repo's design principles: > Adversarial validation > "The agent that checks a finding is never the agent that found it." That one line works far outside security. Why not just ask "are you sure?" That's the obvious move. Ask the same AI to double-check its own work. It rarely works well, for a simple reason. The agent that made the claim already believes it. It wrote the reasoning, so the reasoning looks right to it. | Approach | What really happens | |---|---| | Ask the same agent "are you sure?" | It rereads its own logic and agrees with itself | | Ask it to "test the fix" | It often writes tests that match what it built, not what you wanted | | A fresh checker told to disprove it | It starts with no stake in the answer, and its job is to find the hole | Think of a student marking their own exam. They know what they meant, so they read every answer generously. A second marker only sees what's on the page. Three verdicts, not two Most of us treat AI output as pass or fail. Cloudflare's skill uses three outcomes: - Confirmed: the checker tried to break it and couldn't. - Needs validation: not proven yet. The skill writes down the exact fact that's still missing. - Rejected: the checker found the hole. The middle one matters most. Without it, "I couldn't quite tell" quietly turns into "probably fine". The repo is strict here: "Only confirm established boundary failures." Another principle stops claims from getting inflated: "Severity requires impact." A bug only counts as serious if you can say what actually goes wrong. Run it more than once This line from the repo is easy to skim past: > "In our test runs, a single run found roughly half of the vulnerabilities that repeated runs found in total." AI runs don't come out the same twice. Each one notices different things. So one clean run doesn't mean there's nothing left to find. Try it in your own AI coding work You don't need a security system to use these ideas. Here's the same pattern for an everyday task. Say your AI tool says it fixed a dark mode bug, where the settings page stayed white. 1. Start a fresh session. Not the one that wrote the fix. A new chat, with no memory of the reasoning. 2. Hand it the claim and ask it to disprove it: Another agent claims this change fixes the bug where the settings page stays white in dark mode. Your job is to prove that claim wrong. Look at the change and the code around it. Find any case where the page could still show the wrong colours. End with one verdict: - CONFIRMED: you tried and could not break it. Say what you checked. - NEEDS VALIDATION: you can't tell. Name the exact fact you're missing. - REJECTED: you found a case where it still fails. Show it. 3. Treat "needs validation" as open. Check the missing fact yourself, or give the checker what it needs and run it again. 4. For bigger changes, run the checker twice. If two runs come back with different holes, you've just learned something. > Keep the checker separate > If the checker can see the original agent's reasoning, it tends to adopt it. Give it the claim and the code, not the conversation. Want the real thing? If you do want a security audit, the repo has an install line: npx skills add https://github.com/cloudflare/security-audit-skill --skill security-audit Read the README first. It explains each stage and the format of the findings. Check it worked You'll know the pattern is working when your checker sometimes says REJECTED or NEEDS VALIDATION. If it confirms everything, it isn't really trying. Make the prompt more hostile, or hand it a claim you already know is wrong and see if it catches it. Credit where it's due The design here is Cloudflare's: the security audit skill and their blog post on the harness. I'm pointing at it because the core idea travels well beyond security. Next in Claude Maxxing Part 1 gave Claude a desk. Part 2 gave it a memory. Part 3 gave it eyes. Part 4 is about not taking its word for it. If an AI has ever told you a bug was gone and it wasn't, I'd like to hear how you caught it. Get in touch.

npx skills add cloudflare/security-audit-skill --skill security-audit -g -a claude-code -a codex -y -g

ย. 2026) · cloudflare/security-audit-skill. 10. When your coding model refuses your own AppSec work --- title: "When your coding model refuses your own AppSec work" published: true description: "Why general coding models can get in the way of lawful security tasks, and ground rules for using a model from free-pi's opt-in Defense section on systems you own or are authorized to test." tags: security, ai, devtools, productivity canonical_url: freepi.ai cover_image: freepi.ai --- If you do application security, you have probably watched a coding model decline something routine: writing a proof of concept for a bug in your own staging app, or explaining how a flaw in your own handler would be exploited so you can fix it. That leaves the defender with less help than an attacker would have. I work on free-pi, a free terminal coding agent. We are adding an opt-in Defense section to the /model picker for signed-in GitHub users. The first model is Defense Flash: a reasoning model with tool use and a 1M-token context, chosen for lawful security work that general models often refuse. It is billed from normal credits like any other model. We have not published tests of it, so this post is about using it responsibly, not a benchmark. Ground rules Use it for: - systems and code you own, - employer or client systems where you have written permission to test, - in-scope bug bounty targets, following the program's rules, - software you own or may lawfully analyze (free-pi's /reverse-engineer-anything command covers native binaries, JS and Electron apps, APKs, .NET and websites). Do not use it on anyone else's systems. Computer misuse laws apply whichever model you pick, and a bounty program's scope list is a boundary. Habits that help 1. State the context: who owns the system and what you are authorized to do. 2. Aim at find-and-fix: ask for the minimal patch and a regression test. 3. Test in isolation: a local container or disposable staging copy, never production, no real credentials. free-pi has no OS sandbox for normal sessions. 4. Verify claims: reproduce a reported flaw before you file it, and review every generated patch. 5. Keep the scope in the session: for bounty work, paste the program's scope text. Pairing free-pi bundles the audit method and checklists from the security-audit skill, run in a single agent, so validate each finding yourself. /reverse-engineer-anything covers software you may lawfully analyze. The Defense section is where to look when a general model declines the lawful part. More at freepi.ai.
