This hasn't been the case since NixOS/nix-installer came about. It's a fork of the detsys installer and my anecdotal experience (upgrading to macOS 27) is that it works just as well as detsys' installer.
NixOS/nix-installer NixOS has forked back the Rust installer. The Dix installer used to support upstream Nix but doesn’t any longer. It also installs their proprietary daemon.
