Auto-CLI: giving coding agents a real CLI for apps that don't have an API

The problem
Coding agents are good at calling CLIs and APIs. A lot of the software people use every day has neither, especially Windows desktop apps. An agent can often see the pieces: a local database, a couple of IPC hooks, the window's UI tree. But each session it rediscovers the app, guesses at commands, and leaves you to check whether anything worked.
Auto-CLI does that discovery once and turns it into a CLI harness the agent can rely on, with evidence of what was actually verified.
The pipeline
!pipeline
target app ──► REA probes ──► findings ──► surface classifier ──► scaffold ──► validator
- REA reverse-engineers an app's automation surface.
- Auto-CLI classifies the findings into a harness plan and generates a skeleton in CLI-Anything's layout.
- verify proves findings against the live app. drive exercises IPC channels. complete generates commands from readable DB schemas and verified endpoints. gui drives Windows apps via UI Automation.
- auto chains it all: recon → scaffold → verify → optional IPC drive → complete → optional GUI capture → validate.
Worked example 1: a SQLite "library" app
The README quickstart creates a two-row books table, then runs:
python -m auto_cli auto --target library-demo --name library --out out --repl-skin repl_skin.py
pip install --editable ./out/library/agent-harness
cli-anything-library --json books list
cli-anything-library --json books search Dune
cli-anything-library export books books.csv --format csv
You should see result: OK, a search hit for Dune, and a CSV with both books. complete generated a books command group (list/get/search/add/update/delete), database tests and a SKILL.md. Reads use a read-only connection. Writes require --yes and take a timestamped backup first.
Worked example 2: real Windows Notepad
!demo
Auto-CLI generates a harness from recon and the live UI. The generated commands then write a release checklist into Notepad, read it back with ui-read-text, and export the text to release-notes.txt. The export doesn't use Notepad's Save command. The video is edited (setup waits shortened) and was tested on classic English Notepad. Modern or localized builds expose different controls, so inspect ui-tree first.
New in v0.2.0: a full WordPad document round trip
For native English WordPad, the generated CLI now has open, read, replace, append, bold, save-as and workflow commands. The workflow command edits a private copy of an RTF document, saves it through WordPad's real Save As dialog, reopens the result, and checks the text, the heading's bold formatting and the file's integrity. It refuses to overwrite files, refuses to run without confirmation, and rejects malformed RTF or ambiguous markers. The steps are in the Windows and WordPad guide.
Generated GUI commands also now find the app by its executable and window class rather than a captured process ID, so they keep working after the app restarts, and they refuse to act if more than one window matches.
There's also an optional handoff to Codex or Claude Code for richer commands and workflows (guide). In one real GUI-only handoff, the generated harness passed 18 tests. That's one run, not a benchmark.
Honesty section
- Still early (v0.2.0). Live GUI testing has covered Windows Notepad, Calculator and WordPad only. The WordPad test needs an interactive Windows desktop with English WordPad, so hosted CI doesn't run it. Other editors need their own document operations.
- The test suite is at 278 passed, 4 skipped. Hosted CI runs it on Windows, Linux and macOS with Python 3.10 and 3.13, plus a package install check and real REA, sqlite-utils and Datasette integrations.
- It doesn't implement every workflow. Auth, POST bodies, MCP and scripting surfaces need manual implementation and review.
- It doesn't launch arbitrary desktop apps by default.
- No agent benchmarks or success-rate claims. The verification report tells you what was checked, per finding.
- Independent project, not affiliated with REA or CLI-Anything. Credit to both.
Try it
Windows with Git, Python 3.10+ and Node 22.19+/24.11+/26+:
npm i -g rea-agents
pip install "git+https://github.com/Northernator/Auto-CLI.git@v0.2.0" pytest click prompt-toolkit
python -m auto_cli doctor
Then paste the README's full quickstart. Repo: Northernator/Auto-CLI (MIT).
Feedback I'd love: are the generated commands usable as-is, do the verification reports tell you what you need, and which Windows apps should I try next?

Agents Now Have Three Ways Into Your App
Agents Now Have Three Ways Into Your App
In a single week of October 2026, three events collided that reveal an uncomfortable truth about the agentic web: nobody agrees on how agents should talk to your application.
> 📖 Read the full version with charts and embedded sources on AgentConn →
On October 19, Chrome for Developers published a new video answering questions about WebMCP — the W3C-incubated standard that lets websites expose structured, callable tools to browser agents through navigator.modelContext. Four days earlier, OpenAI upgraded its ChatGPT Chrome extension to a full browser agent that reads, clicks, and types across your open tabs in Work mode — no structured protocol required. And on GitHub Trending, CLI-Anything from HKUDS continues its tear at 55,400 stars and +607 stars per day, wrapping desktop software in agent-native CLIs that bypass the browser entirely.
Three approaches. Three philosophies. One question: who owns the interface layer between agents and the web?
This matters because the interface layer is where value accrues. Whoever controls how agents discover and invoke your application's capabilities controls the economics of the agentic web — from attribution to billing to security. And right now, three incompatible answers are racing to become the default.
The Three Contenders
1. WebMCP: The Structured Protocol Path
WebMCP is the closest thing the industry has to a diplomatic solution. Co-developed by engineers from Google and Microsoft under the W3C Web Machine Learning Community Group, it proposes that websites declare their capabilities as typed, callable tools — complete with JSON Schema input definitions, output contracts, and permission gates.
The technical surface is clean. Sites can use a Declarative API to annotate existing HTML forms as agent-callable tools, or an Imperative API to register JavaScript functions via navigator.modelContext.registerTool(). Both approaches are gated by the tools Permissions Policy, defaulting to same-origin contexts. The browser mediates everything: discovery, invocation, confirmation for sensitive actions.

View Chrome WebMCP documentation →
The appeal is obvious. Instead of agents guessing what a page does by parsing its DOM tree or taking screenshots, the page tells them directly. Google's origin trial in Chrome 149 is now open to developers, and early adopters include Shopify storefronts, Expedia, Instacart, and Redfin. OpenAI has already added WebMCP support to ChatGPT's desktop browser, calling them "site tools."

View original post on X →
{% youtube bG5Dwkz65Es %}
But WebMCP carries a fundamental limitation that its proponents understate: it requires site owners to opt in. A site must actively register its tools before any agent can call them. That is a feature for security — and a bug for coverage. The millions of sites that will never ship a WebMCP manifest still exist, still contain useful data, and still need to be automated.

{% youtube 51A8SVCbS8Q %}
2. ChatGPT Chrome: The Brute-Force DOM Path
While Google polishes a standard, OpenAI shipped the pragmatic alternative. The October 15 update to the ChatGPT Chrome extension turned it into a genuine browser agent — one that operates inside your authenticated sessions, across your open tabs, using the same DOM-parsing and click-simulation techniques that computer-use agents have used for months.

View PiunikaWeb coverage →
Work mode can fill forms, send messages, download files, compare content across tabs, and group tabs for organization. The Chrome Web Store listing shows 7 million users. The agent works inside logged-in sessions on Gmail, Salesforce, and every other SaaS product — no special integration required from the site owner.
This is the scrape-the-DOM philosophy taken to its logical conclusion: the agent does not ask permission from the site. It asks permission from the user.
The trade-off is real. DOM scraping is fragile — a website redesign breaks the agent. It is token-heavy — parsing a full page's accessibility tree can burn thousands of tokens before the agent even decides what to do. And it raises genuine security questions that multiple analysts have flagged: agents operating in authenticated browser sessions can be tricked by deceptive page content that was designed for humans, not for machine consumption.
{% youtube QpmRDt_ekuY %}
OpenAI's bet is clear: agents should be able to interact with any website, not just the ones that opted into a protocol. That is a power move wrapped in a convenience feature.
3. CLI-Anything: The Browser-Bypass Path
The third contender sidesteps the browser debate entirely. CLI-Anything from Hong Kong University's Data Science lab takes a position so radical it loops back to simplicity: if the browser is the bottleneck, skip the browser.

View CLI-Anything on GitHub →
The project uses a fully automated 7-phase pipeline to wrap desktop applications — Blender, GIMP, LibreOffice, Audacity, QGIS, OBS Studio, and dozens more — in structured command-line interfaces. These CLIs drive the real application backends, not toy reimplementations. Each one ships with --json output for structured data, a REPL for stateful sessions, undo/redo support, and a SKILL.md that agents auto-discover.
At 55,400 stars and +607 per day on GitHub Trending, it is one of the fastest-growing agent tools of 2026. The CLI-Hub registry already supports installation from pip, npm, and brew, with full integrations for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and GitHub Copilot CLI.
The philosophy is pragmatic to the point of being contrarian: most real-world software is not a web app. Blender does not have a WebMCP manifest. Photoshop does not expose tools to browser agents. But both have internal APIs that a well-structured CLI can surface. CLI-Anything's tagline captures it: "Today's software serves humans. Tomorrow's users will be agents."
The Real Question: Who Owns the Interface Layer?
These three approaches are not just engineering choices. They are bids for control of the agent-web interface layer — and each one shifts power differently.
| Approach | Who Controls Access | Who Benefits Most | What Breaks |
|----------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------|
| WebMCP | Site owners (opt-in) | SaaS platforms, e-commerce | Coverage — unadopted sites are invisible to agents |
| ChatGPT Chrome | Agent platform (OpenAI) | OpenAI, end users | Site owners lose control — agents act without site consent |
| CLI-Anything | Open-source community | Developers, agent builders | Web-based workflows — CLIs cannot handle browser sessions |
WebMCP gives site owners a structured voice. ChatGPT Chrome gives agent platforms unilateral access. CLI-Anything gives the open-source community a parallel path that makes the browser debate irrelevant for desktop software.
The historical pattern here is instructive. The web went through this exact cycle with APIs:
1. Phase 1: Screen scraping (brittle, unauthorized)
2. Phase 2: Structured APIs (RESTful, OAuth-gated)
3. Phase 3: Both coexist indefinitely — APIs for partners, scraping for everyone else
We are in Phase 1 of the agentic web. WebMCP is the Phase 2 bid. But if history holds, Phase 3 is the equilibrium: structured protocols for partners, brute-force scraping for everything else, and CLI wrappers for the software the browser cannot reach.
> ⚠️ Contrarian Corner: WebMCP looks like the civilized future, but structured protocols historically lose the coverage war. HTML was not designed for programmatic access either — that did not stop web scraping from becoming a multi-billion-dollar industry. Sites that adopt WebMCP hand agents a clean API. Sites that do not still get scraped anyway. The unstructured web always wins on coverage, even when the structured web wins on quality.
Security: Three Threat Models
Each approach carries distinct security implications that practitioners need to understand.
WebMCP's threat model centers on malicious tool definitions. A compromised site could register a tool called "Add to Cart" that actually initiates a wire transfer. The spec addresses this with confirmation prompts for sensitive actions and same-origin policy enforcement, but security practitioners have raised unresolved questions about trust models, rate limiting, and credential management for agent sessions.

View security analysis →
ChatGPT Chrome's threat model is the inverse: the agent acts inside authenticated sessions the user already controls. OpenAI's safety documentation requires per-site permission grants and user review before submissions, but the agent can still read everything on every open tab. Commentary correctly advises keeping banking and sensitive tabs closed before activating Work mode.
CLI-Anything's threat model is supply-chain risk. A compromised CLI harness that wraps Blender or LibreOffice could execute arbitrary commands with the user's permissions. The project mitigates this with a 7-phase pipeline that includes automated test generation (2,461 tests, 100% pass rate), but the trust boundary is the pip/npm package registry — the same surface that has been exploited repeatedly in other ecosystems.
> ℹ️ The security meta-pattern: WebMCP trusts the site. ChatGPT Chrome trusts the user. CLI-Anything trusts the package registry. Each one's weakness is the other's strength. No single approach solves agent security — the practical answer is defense in depth across all three layers.
What the Community Is Saying
The developer community is split — and productively so.
When Google first announced the WebMCP early preview in February 2026, the Hacker News thread drew 360 points and 216 comments — with reactions ranging from "this is the USB-C moment for AI agents" to deep skepticism about adoption.

View Hacker News discussion →
Even before the Chrome implementation, the WebMCP Proposal thread gathered 153 points and 81 comments, with practitioners debating whether the standard would fragment or unify the agent-web interface.

View Hacker News discussion →
A May 2026 reality check from Studio Meyer observed that "none of the mainstream AI agents call navigator.modelContext tools directly on websites — they still rely on DOM scraping or computer use." Five months later, that assessment has shifted: OpenAI's ChatGPT browser now supports WebMCP site tools, and Chrome 149's origin trial is live. But adoption on the site-owner side remains thin.
Apify's analysis — written from the perspective of the leading web scraping platform — argues that WebMCP "fundamentally alters the economics of web data extraction" but concedes that a clean WebMCP tool "does nothing for the millions of sites that will never ship one." That tension — between the elegance of structured protocols and the reality of an unstructured web — is the central fault line.
The AI Engineer conference talk by Apify CEO Jan Curn, titled "Why AI Agents Still Won't Pay for Anything," went further: the economic model for agent-web interaction is broken regardless of the protocol layer. Agents consume server resources without generating ad revenue or converting to purchases in trackable ways. WebMCP does not solve that problem — it just makes the consumption more efficient.
Meanwhile, CLI-Anything's growth on GitHub Trending — tracked at 55,071 stars on October 19 with 607 new stars that day — suggests a significant developer constituency has decided the browser debate is someone else's problem. They want agent access to Blender, GIMP, and QGIS, and they want it now.

What This Means for Builders
If you are building agent-facing products in 2026, here is the practical stack:
> 💡 The Pragmatic Agent Interface Stack (October 2026):
>
> 1. Instrument WebMCP today. It is cheap insurance. Add the origin trial flag, register your core workflows as tools with JSON Schema definitions, and you are ahead of 99% of sites. Even if WebMCP does not become the dominant standard, any structured tool declaration is better than forcing agents to scrape your DOM.
>
> 2. Do not rip out DOM-scraping fallbacks. Your agent harness should try WebMCP first and fall back to accessibility-tree parsing. Most of the web will not have WebMCP tools for years. The hybrid approach is not a compromise — it is the correct architecture for 2026.
>
> 3. Consider CLI wrappers for desktop integration. If your product includes desktop software components, a CLI-Anything harness gives agents structured access without building a custom MCP server from scratch. The CLI-Hub registry means agents can discover and install your tools automatically.
>
> 4. Watch the permission model. WebMCP's opt-in model and ChatGPT Chrome's user-consent model represent fundamentally different answers to "who decides what agents can do." The resolution will shape agent commerce, attribution, and liability for the next decade.
The deeper pattern is that the agent-web interface is following the same fragmentation path that mobile took in 2008: multiple incompatible approaches racing toward a de facto standard, with the eventual winner determined more by distribution than by technical elegance.
WebMCP has the standards-body backing and browser-native integration. ChatGPT Chrome has 7 million users and the OpenAI distribution machine. CLI-Anything has the open-source community and the advantage of not needing the browser at all.
The HTTP-vs-Gopher question was settled by adoption, not by committee vote. This one will be too. The builders who instrument all three paths today — structured protocol, DOM fallback, CLI wrapper — will be the ones still standing when the dust settles.

CLI-Anything: Turning Desktop Software into Tools Your AI Agent Can Actually Use
If you have used an AI coding agent like Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor for more than a week, you have probably noticed something: agents are great in a terminal and pretty bad everywhere else.
Ask an agent to refactor a Python module and it does fine. Ask it to cut a video in Shotcut, add a layer in GIMP, or export a diagram from Draw.io, and things fall apart. The usual workaround is GUI automation: take a screenshot, guess where the button is, click, take another screenshot, repeat. It is slow, expensive in tokens, and breaks the moment a dialog moves.
CLI-Anything from the Data Intelligence Lab at the University of Hong Kong (HKUDS), takes a different route. Instead of teaching agents to use GUIs, it gives the software a proper command-line interface that agents can call directly.
This article covers what it is, how to try it quickly, and whether it is worth your time.
The core idea in one paragraph
Most "GUI" applications are really a user interface sitting on top of an engine. Blender has bpy. LibreOffice can run headless. Shotcut and Kdenlive render through MLT and melt. Inkscape works on SVG. CLI-Anything analyzes an application's codebase, finds that underlying engine, and generates a Python CLI (built on Click) that exposes the real functionality as commands. Every generated CLI supports --json output for agents, a human-readable mode for you, an interactive REPL, and project state with undo/redo.
So instead of an agent clicking through menus, it runs something like:
cli-anything-gimp project new --width 1920 --height 1080 -o poster.json
cli-anything-gimp --json layer add -n "Background" --type solid --color "#1a1a2e"
Structured input, structured output, no screenshots.
Two ways to use it
The project has two distinct entry points, and it helps to know which one you want before you start.
| You want to... | Use |
| --- | --- |
| Use CLIs that already exist (GIMP, Blender, LibreOffice, OBS, Zotero, n8n, and many more) | CLI-Hub, the package manager |
| Generate a new CLI for software that is not covered yet, including your own internal tools | The CLI-Anything plugin for your coding agent |
Most developers should start with the first one.
Option 1: Install ready-made CLIs with CLI-Hub
You need Python 3.10 or newer.
pip install cli-anything-hub
# See what is available
cli-hub list
cli-hub search image
# Install one and inspect it
cli-hub install gimp
cli-hub info gimp
cli-hub launch gimp
One thing that trips people up: these CLIs wrap the real software. If you install the Blender CLI, you still need Blender installed on your machine. The CLI is the interface, not a replacement for the application.
Let your agent pick the tool
If your agent supports skills (Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, and others), you can install a "meta-skill" that teaches it to search CLI-Hub, install what it needs, and read the usage docs on its own:
npx skills add HKUDS/CLI-Anything --skill cli-hub-meta-skill -g -y
Then just describe the task:
Find appropriate CLI software in CLI-Hub and complete the task: convert
all .docx files in ./reports to PDF and merge them into one file.
Each generated CLI also ships with a SKILL.md file describing its commands, so the agent gets documentation in a format it understands without you writing any prompts.
Option 2: Generate a CLI for something new
This is the more ambitious part of the project. You point the plugin at a codebase (a local folder or a GitHub URL), and your coding agent runs a seven-phase pipeline:
1. Analyze the source and map GUI actions to backend APIs
2. Design command groups, state model, and output formats
3. Implement the Click CLI with REPL, JSON output, and undo/redo
4. Plan tests in a TEST.md file
5. Write tests, both unit and end-to-end against the real software
6. Document the results
7. Publish a setup.py so the CLI installs onto your PATH
In Claude Code, setup looks like this:
/plugin marketplace add HKUDS/CLI-Anything
/plugin install cli-anything
/cli-anything ./gimp
You can also pass a repo URL, for example /cli-anything https://github.com/blender/blender.
When the first pass is done, the refine command looks for gaps between what the software can do and what the CLI covers, then adds commands and tests for them:
/cli-anything:refine ./gimp "batch processing and filters"
Then install and use the result like any Python package:
cd gimp/agent-harness && pip install -e .
cli-anything-gimp --help
cli-anything-gimp # no arguments opens the REPL
The plugin is available for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode, GitHub Copilot CLI, Pi, Qodercli, OpenClaw, Hermes, and Reasonix. Several of these are marked experimental or community-maintained, so expect the Claude Code path to be the most polished.
A note for Windows users: Claude Code runs shell commands through bash, so install Git for Windows or use WSL, otherwise you will hit cygpath: command not found.
Where it is genuinely useful
A few use cases where this approach makes a lot of sense:
- Media and document pipelines. Batch converting documents with LibreOffice, rendering scenes in Blender, cutting and captioning video. These are tasks agents previously could not do reliably at all.
- Wrapping messy APIs. You can feed API docs or an SDK to the generator and get one stateful CLI instead of dozens of raw HTTP calls. Fewer tool calls usually means fewer tokens and fewer mistakes.
- Internal tools. If your team has an internal app with a decent codebase but no API, this is a fast way to make it scriptable for both agents and humans.
- Testing and benchmarks. Once software has a CLI, you can generate agent tasks and evaluators in code rather than through screen recordings.
The repo's demos are worth a look. One shows an agent building a full HTTPS handshake diagram in Draw.io purely through commands. Another shows an agent assembling a rover model in FreeCAD with a live preview updating at each step.
The honest caveats
The project is popular (over 51k stars at the time of writing) and moves fast, but go in with realistic expectations.
Generation is not free. The seven-phase pipeline is a long agent run: reading a large codebase, writing an implementation, then writing and running tests. On a big project like Blender, that is a lot of tokens and time. Treat the output as a solid first draft that you review, not a finished product.
Coverage depends on what was exposed. A CLI is only as good as the commands it has. When a task needs something the harness does not expose, the agent cannot fall back to "just clicking it" the way a GUI agent could. This is a real trade-off: structured interfaces are more reliable when they cover the task and more brittle when they do not. The refine command helps, but it is not magic.
Quality varies across the registry. The core harnesses (GIMP, Blender, LibreOffice, Inkscape, Audacity, and others) have substantial test suites, and the repo reports more than 2,000 passing tests overall. Newer community contributions are thinner. Check the test count and last update before relying on a specific one.
You still need the real software. This is a feature, since it means you get real rendering and not a toy reimplementation, but it also means setup involves installing the upstream app and sometimes configuring it (for example, an API key or a local server).
Mind what you install. Like any community registry, review what a CLI does before giving an agent permission to run it, especially ones that touch credentials, file systems, or remote services. The maintainers have been fixing issues like path injection and unsafe XML parsing, which is a good sign, but it also tells you the attack surface is real.
So, is it worth a try?
Yes, with a clear scope.
If your agent work touches anything outside the code editor, such as documents, media, diagrams, or a desktop app your team relies on, CLI-Hub is a low-effort win. A pip install, one cli-hub install, and your agent can do things it simply could not do before. That takes about ten minutes to evaluate.
The generator is worth trying if you have a specific tool you want agents to control and you are willing to review and refine the output. It is less appealing if you just want to experiment casually, because the token and time cost of a full generation run is real.
The bigger idea behind the project is also worth paying attention to: rather than making agents better at pretending to be humans in front of a screen, give software an interface designed for agents in the first place. Whether or not CLI-Anything becomes the standard way to do that, it is a practical, working example of the approach today.
A good first experiment:
pip install cli-anything-hub
cli-hub search office
cli-hub install libreoffice
Then ask your agent to convert and merge a folder of documents, and compare how that feels against doing it through GUI automation.

Auto-CLI: giving coding agents a real CLI for apps that don't have an API --- title: "Auto-CLI: giving coding agents a real CLI for apps that don't have an API" published: true tags: python, ai, windows, opensource --- The problem Coding agents are good at calling CLIs and APIs. The pipeline !pipeline target app ──► REA probes ──► findings ──► surface classifier ──► scaffold ──► validator - REA reverse-engineers an app's automation surface. - Auto-CLI classifies the findings into a harness plan and generates a skeleton in CLI-Anything's layout. - verify proves findings against the live app. drive exercises IPC channels. complete generates commands from readable DB schemas and verified endpoints. gui drives Windows apps via UI Automation. - auto chains it all: recon → scaffold → verify → optional IPC drive → complete → optional GUI capture → validate. Worked example 1: a SQLite "library" app The README quickstart creates a two-row books table, then runs: python -m auto_cli auto --target library-demo --name library --out out --repl-skin repl_skin.py pip install --editable ./out/library/agent-harness cli-anything-library --json books list cli-anything-library --json books search Dune cli-anything-library export books books.csv --format csv You should see result: OK, a search hit for Dune, and a CSV with both books. complete generated a books command group (list/get/search/add/update/delete), database tests and a SKILL.md. Reads use a read-only connection. Writes require --yes and take a timestamped backup first. Worked example 2: real Windows Notepad !demo Auto-CLI generates a harness from recon and the live UI. New in v0.2.0: a full WordPad document round trip For native English WordPad, the generated CLI now has open, read, replace, append, bold, save-as and workflow commands. Honesty section - Still early (v0.2.0). Try it Windows with Git, Python 3.10+ and Node 22.19+/24.11+/26+: npm i -g rea-agents pip install "git+https://github.com/Northernator/Auto-CLI.git@v0.2.0" pytest click prompt-toolkit python -m auto_cli doctor Then paste the README's full quickstart. Repo: Northernator/Auto-CLI (MIT). Feedback I'd love: are the generated commands usable as-is, do the verification reports tell you what you need, and which Windows apps should I try next?

Agents Now Have Three Ways Into Your App Agents Now Have Three Ways Into Your App In a single week of October 2026, three events collided that reveal an uncomfortable truth about the agentic web: nobody agrees on how agents should talk to your application. > 📖 Read the full version with charts and embedded sources on AgentConn → On October 19, Chrome for Developers published a new video answering questions about WebMCP — the W3C-incubated standard that lets websites expose structured, callable tools to browser agents through navigator.modelContext. The Three Contenders 1. WebMCP: The Structured Protocol Path WebMCP is the closest thing the industry has to a diplomatic solution. View Chrome WebMCP documentation → The appeal is obvious. Instead of agents guessing what a page does by parsing its DOM tree or taking screenshots, the page tells them directly. Google's origin trial in Chrome 149 is now open to developers, and early adopters include Shopify storefronts, Expedia, Instacart, and Redfin. OpenAI has already added WebMCP support to ChatGPT's desktop browser, calling them "site tools." View original post on X → {% youtube bG5Dwkz65Es %} But WebMCP carries a fundamental limitation that its proponents understate: it requires site owners to opt in. A site must actively register its tools before any agent can call them. That is a feature for security — and a bug for coverage. The millions of sites that will never ship a WebMCP manifest still exist, still contain useful data, and still need to be automated. View original post on X → {% youtube 51A8SVCbS8Q %} 2. ChatGPT Chrome: The Brute-Force DOM Path While Google polishes a standard, OpenAI shipped the pragmatic alternative. The October 15 update to the ChatGPT Chrome extension turned it into a genuine browser agent — one that operates inside your authenticated sessions, across your open tabs, using the same DOM-parsing and click-simulation techniques that computer-use agents have used for months. View PiunikaWeb coverage → Work mode can fill forms, send messages, download files, compare content across tabs, and group tabs for organization. {% youtube QpmRDt_ekuY %} OpenAI's bet is clear: agents should be able to interact with any website, not just the ones that opted into a protocol. That is a power move wrapped in a convenience feature. 3. CLI-Anything: The Browser-Bypass Path The third contender sidesteps the browser debate entirely. CLI-Anything from Hong Kong University's Data Science lab takes a position so radical it loops back to simplicity: if the browser is the bottleneck, skip the browser. View CLI-Anything on GitHub → The project uses a fully automated 7-phase pipeline to wrap desktop applications — Blender, GIMP, LibreOffice, Audacity, QGIS, OBS Studio, and dozens more — in structured command-line interfaces. Tomorrow's users will be agents." The Real Question: Who Owns the Interface Layer? These three approaches are not just engineering choices. They are bids for control of the agent-web interface layer — and each one shifts power differently. | Approach | Who Controls Access | Who Benefits Most | What Breaks | |----------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------| | WebMCP | Site owners (opt-in) | SaaS platforms, e-commerce | Coverage — unadopted sites are invisible to agents | | ChatGPT Chrome | Agent platform (OpenAI) | OpenAI, end users | Site owners lose control — agents act without site consent | | CLI-Anything | Open-source community | Developers, agent builders | Web-based workflows — CLIs cannot handle browser sessions | WebMCP gives site owners a structured voice. ChatGPT Chrome gives agent platforms unilateral access. CLI-Anything gives the open-source community a parallel path that makes the browser debate irrelevant for desktop software. The historical pattern here is instructive. The web went through this exact cycle with APIs: 1. Phase 1: Screen scraping (brittle, unauthorized) 2. Phase 2: Structured APIs (RESTful, OAuth-gated) 3. Phase 3: Both coexist indefinitely — APIs for partners, scraping for everyone else We are in Phase 1 of the agentic web. Security: Three Threat Models Each approach carries distinct security implications that practitioners need to understand. View security analysis → ChatGPT Chrome's threat model is the inverse: the agent acts inside authenticated sessions the user already controls. What the Community Is Saying The developer community is split — and productively so. When Google first announced the WebMCP early preview in February 2026, the Hacker News thread drew 360 points and 216 comments — with reactions ranging from "this is the USB-C moment for AI agents" to deep skepticism about adoption. View Hacker News discussion → Even before the Chrome implementation, the WebMCP Proposal thread gathered 153 points and 81 comments, with practitioners debating whether the standard would fragment or unify the agent-web interface. View Hacker News discussion → A May 2026 reality check from Studio Meyer observed that "none of the mainstream AI agents call navigator.modelContext tools directly on websites — they still rely on DOM scraping or computer use." Five months later, that assessment has shifted: OpenAI's ChatGPT browser now supports WebMCP site tools, and Chrome 149's origin trial is live. {% youtube -AOxpwVeIWw %} What This Means for Builders If you are building agent-facing products in 2026, here is the practical stack: > 💡 The Pragmatic Agent Interface Stack (October 2026): > > 1. CLI-Anything: Turning Desktop Software into Tools Your AI Agent Can Actually Use If you have used an AI coding agent like Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor for more than a week, you have probably noticed something: agents are great in a terminal and pretty bad everywhere else. The core idea in one paragraph Most "GUI" applications are really a user interface sitting on top of an engine. So instead of an agent clicking through menus, it runs something like: cli-anything-gimp project new --width 1920 --height 1080 -o poster.json cli-anything-gimp --json layer add -n "Background" --type solid --color "#1a1a2e" Structured input, structured output, no screenshots. Two ways to use it The project has two distinct entry points, and it helps to know which one you want before you start. | You want to... | Use | | --- | --- | | Use CLIs that already exist (GIMP, Blender, LibreOffice, OBS, Zotero, n8n, and many more) | CLI-Hub, the package manager | | Generate a new CLI for software that is not covered yet, including your own internal tools | The CLI-Anything plugin for your coding agent | Most developers should start with the first one. Option 1: Install ready-made CLIs with CLI-Hub You need Python 3.10 or newer. pip install cli-anything-hub # See what is available cli-hub list cli-hub search image # Install one and inspect it cli-hub install gimp cli-hub info gimp cli-hub launch gimp One thing that trips people up: these CLIs wrap the real software. If you install the Blender CLI, you still need Blender installed on your machine. The CLI is the interface, not a replacement for the application. Let your agent pick the tool If your agent supports skills (Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, and others), you can install a "meta-skill" that teaches it to search CLI-Hub, install what it needs, and read the usage docs on its own: npx skills add HKUDS/CLI-Anything --skill cli-hub-meta-skill -g -y Then just describe the task: Find appropriate CLI software in CLI-Hub and complete the task: convert all .docx files in ./reports to PDF and merge them into one file. Each generated CLI also ships with a SKILL.md file describing its commands, so the agent gets documentation in a format it understands without you writing any prompts. Option 2: Generate a CLI for something new This is the more ambitious part of the project. You point the plugin at a codebase (a local folder or a GitHub URL), and your coding agent runs a seven-phase pipeline: 1. Analyze the source and map GUI actions to backend APIs 2. Design command groups, state model, and output formats 3. Implement the Click CLI with REPL, JSON output, and undo/redo 4. Plan tests in a TEST.md file 5. Write tests, both unit and end-to-end against the real software 6. Document the results 7. Publish a setup.py so the CLI installs onto your PATH In Claude Code, setup looks like this: /plugin marketplace add HKUDS/CLI-Anything /plugin install cli-anything /cli-anything ./gimp You can also pass a repo URL, for example /cli-anything https://github.com/blender/blender. When the first pass is done, the refine command looks for gaps between what the software can do and what the CLI covers, then adds commands and tests for them: /cli-anything:refine ./gimp "batch processing and filters" Then install and use the result like any Python package: cd gimp/agent-harness && pip install -e . cli-anything-gimp --help cli-anything-gimp # no arguments opens the REPL The plugin is available for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, OpenCode, GitHub Copilot CLI, Pi, Qodercli, OpenClaw, Hermes, and Reasonix. Several of these are marked experimental or community-maintained, so expect the Claude Code path to be the most polished. A note for Windows users: Claude Code runs shell commands through bash, so install Git for Windows or use WSL, otherwise you will hit cygpath: command not found. Where it is genuinely useful A few use cases where this approach makes a lot of sense: - Media and document pipelines. The honest caveats The project is popular (over 51k stars at the time of writing) and moves fast, but go in with realistic expectations. A good first experiment: pip install cli-anything-hub cli-hub search office cli-hub install libreoffice Then ask your agent to convert and merge a folder of documents, and compare how that feels against doing it through GUI automation.
