jiangshan-map

What does it do?

It is an interactive historical atlas of China from 403 BCE to the present, with territorial snapshots, ancient places, and classical poetry routes. [1a][1b] It lets someone move through a timeline and click a city or mountain pass to see how its name and administration changed across historical periods. [2a][2b] For example, a user can select a year and place to open a city’s genealogy card and related historical events. [3a][3b]

Chronicles of the Realm: An Interactive Historical Atlas of China from the Warring States (403 BCE) to the Present (3.2k stars) What it does All text below is quoted directly from the project README. >An interactive historical atlas of China from the Warring States (403 BCE) to the present Feature 1: Scrub the Timeline to Watch Realms Rise & Fall, Track Monarchs, and Compare Ancient & Modern Borders: - Multi-Polity Confrontations on a Single Canvas: From the Seven Warring States (Qin, Chu, Qi, Yan, Zhao, Wei, Han) alongside Zhou, Yue, Ba-Shu, Zhongshan, and Yiqu, to the Three Kingdoms warlords (Yuan Shao, Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Quan, Gongsun's Liaodong), Northern & Southern Dynasties, Five Dynasties & Ten Kingdoms, and Song, Liao, Western Xia, Dali, Jin, and the Mongols, all rendered side-by-side in high-contrast traditional parchment hues. Hover over any polity in the bottom-left legend to highlight its territory, or click to zoom straight to it. - Inline Reigning Monarch & Imperial Era Display: The timeline dynamically displays the reigning monarch (temple/posthumous title + personal name + reign span, e.g., Emperor Wu of Han · Liu Che, Emperor Taizong of Tang · Li Shimin, Emperor Shengzu of Qing · Xuanye) alongside the exact imperial era year. - Ancient Prefecture Hover Inspection & Modern X-Ray Lens: First-level administrative divisions (Commanderies, Circuits, Routes, and Provinces) are rendered with deduplicated Parchment Casing borders. Zoom in and hover over any prefecture (e.g., Ming Yingtian Prefecture or Three Kingdoms Jingzhou) to inspect its jurisdiction and modern provincial equivalents, or toggle the X-Ray Lens to project modern provincial boundaries directly over the historical map. - Dynamic River Courses, Ancient Lakes & Grand Engineering Works: As you scrub through time, historical shifts of the Yellow River, expanding and shrinking ancient lakes (Yunmeng Marsh, Lop Nur / Puchanghai), Warring States/Qin/Han/Ming Great Walls, Sui-Tang & Grand Canals, the Silk Road, and Zheng He's maritime routes evolve in lockstep with each era. >No dependencies or build steps required. Then I found Jiangshan Map by DeanChensj and contributors: Chinese history explored through a map, events and people. It inspired me to build this, and the atlas also adapts attributed Jiangshan material. Thank you! DeanChensj/jiangshan-map 4/5

I made an interactive parchment map of Chinese history - scrub through dynasties, click any ancient city to trace its 2000-year story preview.redd.it Hi r/ChineseHistory! Whenever I read Chinese history (Zizhi Tongjian, Records of the Grand Historian, or Tang and Song poetry), I always wished I had a single map I could actually interact with—instead of flipping through hundreds of static PDF pages just to see how borders shifted or figure out where ancient places like Jiankang, Chang'an, or Red Cliffs sit on a modern map. Over the past few weeks, I built Chronicles of the Realm (江山时序) — a free, open-source interactive historical atlas of China styled after traditional parchment maps, drawing on Tan Qixiang's Historical Atlas of China and Harvard's CHGIS datasets: - Interactive Map (English): deanchen.me - GitHub (Open Source): DeanChensj/jiangshan-map What you can do on the map: - Watch Empires Rise, Split, and Reunify: Drag the timeline from the Warring States (403 BCE) to the present. You can see competing kingdoms side by side (Seven Warring States, Three Kingdoms warlords, Song–Liao–Jin–Xia), check the reigning monarch and era name for any year, see dashed "ghost borders" showing what territory was gained or lost at each milestone, and toggle an X-Ray Lens to compare ancient prefectures against modern provincial borders. - Click Any Ancient City or Mountain Pass to Read Its Story (Trace Place): Click any city, strategic pass (Hangu Pass, Tong Pass, Jianmen Pass, Yumen Pass), or battlefield (Red Cliffs, Changping, Feishui) to see how its name and jurisdiction changed from dynasty to dynasty, which empires crowned it as their capital, and the major historical events that unfolded right there. - Try it (Tang Chang'an in 741 CE): deanchen.me - Walk in the Footsteps of Historical Figures (Journeys): Follow step-by-step routes for Qin Shi Huang's unification campaigns (watching the six rival states merge into Qin one by one), Zhang Qian's mission to the Western Regions, Zhuge Liang's Northern Expeditions, Xuanzang's overland pilgrimage to India, Li Bai's travels, Su Shi's exiles, and Wang Yangming's campaigns. - Try it (Su Shi's Exile Route): deanchen.me - Play the Map Pinpoint Challenge: Hide all city labels and test your historical geography intuition by pinpointing ancient cities on the unlabeled map using dynastic clues: deanchen.me It runs entirely in the browser with no ads, sign-ups, or tracking. I'd love to hear what you think—and if you spot any historical or cartographic inaccuracies in your favorite era, please let me know!
