PecoFence GitHub Overview: Scriptable Windows Desktop Organization with Rust and CLI
pecofence by dayuanjiang: dayuanjiang/pecofence
PecoFence is an open-source Rust desktop organizer for Windows that turns a manually arranged desktop into a programmable workspace. The overview explains how glass fences group shortcuts and files, how tabs conserve screen space, and how live folders surface directory contents as interactive desktop panels.
Its CLI connects to the native renderer through structured JSON over a Windows named pipe, giving developers and AI agents a way to inspect layouts, route items with sorting rules, preview changes with dry runs, and restore saved state with snapshots. The sorting model changes the graphical placement of an item without moving its underlying file path.
The tradeoffs matter: the glass effect samples static wallpaper, the settings panel depends on WebView2, and distribution choices affect PATH integration and SmartScreen behavior. The video also covers JSON-backed layout recovery and the project’s fit for Windows power users who want reproducible, scriptable desktop organization.

pecofence by dayuanjiang: dayuanjiang/pecofence

I built a Fences alternative that lets Claude Code manage your Windows desktop, free and open source
Site: pecofence.jiang.jp
Repo: DayuanJiang/PecoFence
My desktop was a mess and Fences costs money. The free ones (360, Tencent desktop) have privacy problems, there's an openfence on github but it's pretty weak, so I vibe coded my own.
I do front end for work, never wrote Rust before, so Claude Code wrote all of it. First message was "I want an oss version of fences to organize my desktop" and I told it to go research online and write a plan first. The plan it wrote was 100k+ characters with like 15 decisions for me to make, I answered them and it started.
Day one the frosted glass was just a semi-transparent rectangle. I screenshotted it and asked it to look at it itself and tell me if that looks like frosted glass. It kept doing this the whole month, telling me something works and then I try it and it's broken. Like one time dragging a tab out of a fence left an empty window behind, just the shadow. It had already reviewed that code 4 times and still missed it, I saw it the first time I dragged a tab. After I yelled at it for a while it made its own test setup, runs a second copy of the app with my config copied over, scripts the drags and merges and then looks at its own screenshots. Which broke stuff too, the screenshot script minimized every window on my pc, once while I was in a game. And it once sent fake mouse drags with bad coordinates and moved things around in my chrome window instead.
Oh and another one, I said files take a second or two to show up in a fence after dragging and it said its test shows 4ms. We argued for a few rounds until it finally read the log on my machine and found out it measured a different path than the one I use, and mine waits a second before refreshing.
Now I don't believe it when it says fixed lol, I make it swap the I'm running and I clickites way too much code. When the cli was done I told it to go organize my actual desktop wIt did, then came back s and implemented every one. I asked do we actually need all of this (typed that a lot thimonth) and had it spin one as a user, one asmaintainer, plus one that checked which commands were even used. Wup deleting a bunch. LaR, claude reworked itand it was still 1200 lines. Asked why so much and turned out it a4-level error message tents suggested it. About 700 messages in aok do it or continue. It's like 110k lines of Rust now over 50 PRs, and it got onto the microsoft store and winebsite (10 languages),the manual and the trailer.
I also had it make a pecofence-cli, mostly because I'm doing everything through claude code anyntrol the desktop too. There's a describe command that dumps all the commands as json schema aa skill command that pr to read. So I can tell claude code something like move all my pdfs into a Docs fence and make new ones go there too, mands itself.
It's free and open sourom the ms store orwinget, or grab the installer from github releases.

I built a Fences alternative that lets Claude Code manage your Windows desktop, free and open source Site: pecofence.jiang.jp Repo: DayuanJiang/PecoFence My desktop was a mess and Fences costs money.
